• The FBI Might Cut Off the Internet For Millions of People on March 8th

i want to see internet traffic info on march 8 if this happens.
Defiantly a sensationalist headline.
Well they CAN, but there is no way they will let them do that.
Why would they not be allowed to shut down a malicous DNS server used in conjuction with a Trojan to redirect users to sites that are not listed under the domain name typed. Pretty sure doing something like that is against the law, all they are doing is shutting down a DNS server hosted by those who created the virus, they aren't turning off the internet.
How do you go from
The FBI has attained a warrant to take down the servers of a malicious botnet infecting government computers
to
The FBI is going to cut off internet access to millions of people

"What's more, the worm is particularly malicious in that it also prevents you from visiting security websites that might diagnose or fix the problem."

Well give an example of one of this sites then
try clicking the article
Seems there's a bit of confusion here. The title is actually correct. "Might" is the key word here. The trojan makes their computer, go to a malicious DNS. If the malicious DNS is shut down, then there's no rerouting, but there's no internet for that person, until they get rid of the trojan. Now, the reason they're saying the FBI might shut off internet for millions of people, is because millions of people are infected. So, millions of people's computers, go this malicious DNS. If they don't get a replacement DNS in place, which they might not, since the court order runs out on March 8th, then anyone infected with that trojan, to that DNS, is without any internet. If the FBI sets up the temporary DNS, then it'll give them internet, they won't be rerouted to malicious sites, but since it is only temporary, it may be something telling the user, to get their computer looked at, since it's got a trojan on it.
Thank OP for that absolutely horrible thread title.
hey
I had this fucker. I don't understand how this will fix the problem when the worm is on OUR computers?
This sounds like bullshit. There's probably another reason, as well as this one.
I don't understand how this will fix the problem when the worm is on OUR computers?
The trojan changes the DNS settings to another DNS, which reroutes you to the malicious pages. If you shut down the DNS that the trojan sets it to, then you can no longer be rerouted to the malicious pages. However, no replacement DNS, means no internet. FBI replacement DNS, means they can probably tell people via that DNS, that they're infected. Does that clarify it?
nah just means no connecting via URL, can still connect using the IP of a web page
Well, Yeah, but that is extremely impractical. I highly doubt that everyone can remember the IPs they're gonna need to go to for everything.

Oh wow, my old computer had this, it directed me to some Asian porn site whenever I tried to search anything.
Defiantly a sensationalist headline.
http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/ Sorry, it's actually one of the typos that piss me off. Anyway, if anyone had this trojan, they'd probably have noticed by now, especially with the search results. Plus, if those people can't be arsed to fix it, then I could get why they'd get their internet shut off. Isn't it like a quarantine zone for infected computers? In some sort of way?
Oh wow, my old computer had this, it directed me to some Asian porn site whenever I tried to search anything.
I'm not seeing the issue here?
Oh wow, my old computer had this, it directed me to some Asian porn site whenever I tried to search anything.
was it asian midget porn by any chance?
The clear answer here is to invade Estonia. The 82nd Airborne is on its way to Tallinn, and the 101st to Tartu. Prepare your Anus Estonia. To be actually ontopic, how hard would it be for the government to shut down the DNS, unless if I totally missed it?
Proud to be Estonian !
Damn, this sounds like the conficker virus. It was a bitch having to convince friends that it did exist (couldn't access security websites etc) and to stop them reinfecting their and others PCs with their infected USBs they forgot to tell me about. I somewhat support this notion.
Oh what? They won't be able to do this.
Yes they will, its kind of an extreme move but it is possible. [editline]17th February 2012[/editline]
Well they CAN, but there is no way they will let them do that.
If they have a court order then they can do it.
I don't understand how this will fix the problem when the worm is on OUR computers?
It's through your DNS, I changed mine to OpenDNS and it fixed the virus.
Never heard of it... and i live in estonia
The FBI should just send everyone a link to Norton Power Eraser. Not only will it erase any infected files but also part of your operating system. http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx My friend had a virus similar to the one mentioned and he could not seem to get rid of it. In desperation he tried the Power Eraser. It crashed his computer and he had to reload windows, but the virus was gone!
Of course there are idiots thinking they're doing this as some sort of conspiracy show of power, but no, its a perfectly legitimate reason that is perfectly...well, reasonable. They are warning people of the downage a good amount of time in advance, and are doing it for the greater good.
The FBI aren't shutting anyone's internet off because of this. It's not even that bad of a trojan anyway. More than the computers they just said have trojans, some worse than this, some not as bad, what makes this one special? Nothing, it's just more successful than others
Holy fuck My old computer had this
>command prompt >ping <insert name of site here> >get IP >type in IP >??? >Websites.
actually i'm pretty sure 'ping' looks up the website url using a dns server but hey there's google's public dns
