So how do you know if you have it?

The DNSChanger Trojan originated in Estonia
We love you guys.
I had this trojan, every web search and website would direct me to the same thing. Thank god I know how freeze these things and get rid of them.
Got this serveral times on my mom's laptop. Just went to a backup state and it fixed it, along with running a full malware bytes scan in safemode where it wont stop me from doing so. I am glad those fuckers got arrested.

.. but, that uses a NSLookup, which uses DNS servers.
I want to try this virus on a Win XP VM and see how easy it is to remove.
How will they explain this to the people casually browsing the web for porn or studying to a test?

Sounds like ask.com search to me.
I'm surprised they don't just set up a simple page that says that their computer is infected and gives a few links to antivirus software or something. Seems like it would be more effective than just outright shutting it down.
Came in thread thinking there was a problem.
Found out only problem is that OP didn't read article.
8.8.8.8 is Google's free DNS, if you lose internet and you have no idea what to do it's the easiest number in the world to remember
of course it shouldn't be that hard to find your default DNS on your router page.
Fuck off america stop trying to run the world
Bullshit, there's no way a trojan could be NEARLY that big and not be noticed
I had this asshole virus once. It was terribly confusing to just randomly jump to pages I didn't actually put in.

Well give an example of one of these sites then
Well, that has totally happened to me. I've had a virus before that blocked almost every conceivable page that had anything to do with antivirus programs. Basically all their home pages and even a lot of alternative sites the programs had been uploaded to were inaccessible to me.

I had to work on somebody's computer like that. I had to download Avast and a definition update installer on a separate PC. Those are the nasty ones. You would almost be completely and utterly fucked if you didn't have another working computer with internet access.
Damn OP title thought that the FBI was going to kill the Internet for some stupid shit.

I'm pretty sure, that's what they are trying to do. Notice how in the article, it says they're trying to setup the temporary FBI DNS? Yeah, That'd probably tell them.
The FBI should just send everyone a link to Norton Power Eraser. Not only will it erase any infected files but also part of your operating system.

My friend had a virus similar to the one mentioned and he could not seem to get rid of it. In desperation he tried the Power Eraser. It crashed his computer and he had to reload windows, but the virus was gone!
ComboFix.
It's the antivirus equivalent of carpet bombing everything.
These threads are like a game of Chinese whispers while completely hammered if the title isn't 100% accurate. It's not the FBI deliberately shutting down their Internet connections, but the court order that gave them the right to run the DNS server that the botnet was using expires.
people really don't like to read do they
I just checked, and I'm clean. Then again. I always use NoScript, though I don't know if that's every effective against this.
i had this virus a few years ago. every time i tried to go to a different website, it brought me to a different site... thank god its gone. just hope i don't get it again.
Browser hijacks are never fun.
My mum's computer had one a few years ago. Was a pain to deal with.
What they should do with this temp DNS is whitelist a few sites. Those being Avast!, Microsoft (for MSE), and a couple of other anti-virus solutions.
For every other site they should display something like this.

Read the article.

Did you actually read the article or did you just guess the contents by the title?
The DNSChanger Trojan originated in Estonia and might be lurking undetected on as many as a half-million computers in the United States

I had this fucker. It redirected everything I searched to porn, ads or gambling.
How the fuck does that go undetected? "lets see, gonna check the news, oh, my computer wants me to look at porn? what ever this works for me."
Government agencies don't know how to use simple virus protection programs.

If I opened up chrome and saw that I would piss myself. I would have something in there like:
You have a virus, but its ok. This is the FBI and we got this shit covered. Now get some antivirus so you can get back to your farmville.
