Anti-Defamation League Slams 'Fun" Holocaust Video Game As Horrific And Inappropriate
so its wrong to show the Holocaust in games but ok to show it in movies? I could see if you were a Nazi and were killing the Jews personally but its the complete opposite
Even then there should be nothing wrong. It's only fiction.
Hell, I used to play Fallout with a nazi version of the Enclave Commander mod. I just liked being the badguy for once, I don't see how that makes me a bad person, or more importantly; offend anyone. I'd see it as more offensive if someone knocked on my door, accusing me of being an insensitive skinhead...
Even though I don't find it offensive, I can see how it could be. You're turning a traumatic event of many a persons' lives into a videogame where you go around blowing the shit out of everyone in your path. Even if they turned it into an educational piece, I doubt that would exonerate it of being offensive. Then again- the minority (offended party) is severely outnumbered so they're just dumb to everyone else who could care less.
How is that different from war games/movies? Wars are traumatic events too you know.

Only if you're in them.
Here's the game.

Wow, they did the outdoor environments surprisingly well for the W3D engine
When I read the title, I thought you played as the Nazis. Glad that I am wrong with that assumption.
I don't see how this is different from any other WW II video game. You kill nazis in those games as well.
I've seen the Holocaust as a subject in countless pieces of art, books, and movies. If videos games should be "off limits", then the same should apply to all other forms of media. Does everyone just think that video games are just immature pieces of entertainment that only kids play?
What are they going to say next, that the holocaust should just be forgotten? Its history, and it shouldnt be covered up.
The ADL whinge about just about everything, it's not worth listening to them.
What are they going to say next, that the holocaust should just be forgotten? Its history, and it shouldnt be covered up.
Probably same people who think holocaust never happened
I think that this game is somewhat showing respect to victims of this horrible event. They're basing sites off of pictures. But on the other hand, it's true, to make a game about this is ridiculous. The holocaust is in movies mostly for documentation or to draw emotion out to get empathy from the viewer. This game isn't to honor the dead or spread light on the subject; it's to kill. And to kill a massive group of people... think about it, isn't that what we hate the Nazis for?

Oh big fucking deal. Video games have so much killing in it, and it's not like the event is sacred. They make it hard to talk about it let alone do anything truly offensive about it.
Honestly, being up in arms about this things existence is a little ridiculous.
Just because of that quote I hope the developers make nine sequels
Nothing should be off-limits when it comes to art. (Yes, games = art. Get over it)
Games are not art, and will never be "art"
(however game assets can be art such as 3d models)
However this is a expression of free speech and they should not only be allowed to make it but should be encouraged to share their game not demonized for it regardless of context.

Video games? Not art? Video games are just as much art as a book, or a painting. Do you know how much work and time is put into something like the gameplay elements in a lot of games?

Arguably we hate the Nazis because they lost seeing as Stalin killed more innocent people then Hitler and is considered one of the heroes of WW2
Victors write history ect ect.
( I am not claiming the Nazis are good, what they did was extremely terrible but not even close to the worst thing that happened in the time period. )

Yes, well, that's the way history went. It's just getting technical from there out. History having taken this course leads us to hate them because they did kill a big group of people.
HumanAbyss: Yes, there's killing in other video games, but the difference is that most of them, even if in realistic sort of war situations, are not based off of real-life events. Think of it this way: how would you feel about a video game about 9/11?

You're an idiot.
By your logic a painting is not art, but individual parts of it are.
Or a music track is not art, but individual instrument tracks are.
Also fuck you media, I enjoy killing my pixels.

TBH if it was fun and had good destruction, I'd FUCKING LOVE to crash a plane into a skyscraper.
Right, right, but how would people react to the images of people falling from the buildings? The deaths, the smoke in the air? It would cause tears, refreshed memories, heartache. It'd be bad. Very bad. But if you made a game simply about crashing planes into things, it'd be fine, regardless of the resemblance unless it was blatant.

9/11 video game? Do want.

It's not like you're forced to play it.
I loved JFK reloaded despite the thing that you simulate a headshot to a USA president.
I get offended and it brings me to tears when I see a pony, what, should ponies be banned or something? Just deal with it.
You know this is an entirely different situation than a pony. That's a poor argument. And wasn't the JFK thing made for investigation purposes? I'm not forced to play it, but I am forced to interact with the world, with society, and if society is going to be influenced this, then indirectly I'm dealing with the impact it makes.

How will it influence society after they play a wolfenstein mod where you shoot nazis? Don't be silly.

Do you have any idea how fucking dumb this is? You may very well be, but it's not responsible for that, and should not be help responsible for that. Everyone has a choice to not do something. Everyone is in that same boat, big deal.
why cant people shut the fuck up and stop getting offended over every damn thing
I'm gonna play the shit out of this, sweet mother of moses this looks fun as hell.
if you're gonna give these game developers the right to make this game, then you gotta let the ADL have the right to be offended
Here's the game.
They've been making that since 2007?
if you're gonna give these game developers the right to make this game, then you gotta let the ADL have the right to be offended
They have every right to be offended, but we also have the right to criticize them being offended.
They don't have the right to ban this game, though they do have the right to propose banning it (and so long as it's not banned there's no right being breached).

Yeah but they're not trying to have it banned. They're saying it's in terrible taste, which it is. This doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. There's no free speech issue here because the developer's right to free speech isn't being threatened.
Although this was probably a bad move on the ADL's part because by giving this mod attention in the media (or Kotaku anyway) they just increased its visibility by a factor of 100.

This is very true. I didn't know it even existed before this article
