I completely agree with Stephen, there is also a possibility for aliens to be appalled/repulsed by us, I would be far from surprised if we were one of the worst intellect obtaining representatives in the universe. We are also probably disgustingly primitive compared to some of the things out there, most aliens would most likely view us as monkeys with sticks that never get along with each other and cannot solve extremely simple problems that they are having.
It does sound depressing, but I find it to be one of the most realistic outcomes, an alien race would never admire another race for a lack of union, which was present from the very beginning of mankind, up to this day.
All of that even if the alien race even remotely functions mentally like us.
Beyond comprehension is a massive cop out. Alien life would of had to of evolved in similar environments to us, maybe having a different role; humans evolved as scavengers and hunters, they could be a hive society or non-predatory creatures. Either way, it's something that we should be able to have a human analogue to and be able to comprehend it in simple terms.
Seriously though, I would not want to encounter space-faring humans. We are massive dicks and wouldn't think twice about annihilating a society if we saw it as dangerous.
I'd love to go on a walk with Mr. Hawking some day and just talk with him about the universe.

So how does he walk?
I never thought about it like this. When the Columbian exchange happened, the introduction of new diseases and viruses to the native americans killed between 50% and 90% of their population. The same could happen if we come into contact with a new species without there being any kind of controls implemented.
There's a big chance we won't even be "compatible". Alien species might work completely different than life on earth with its DNS and cells and shit.
Or, we could develop massive weapons and beat the living shit out of EVERY alien race we encounter!
HUMANITY FOR THE WIN!
And you didnt say Pandora's box why?
King Tut's tomb was full of riches and all kinds of crazy shit. It lived up to the hype.
The opening of Al Capone's vault was really hyped, but all they found was trash.

The size of the universe is enormous beyond comprehension, the probability of something existing out there beyond our comprehension is extremely high, unless there is a slim chance of the universe following various global rules for intelligent life/physics/etc, but the chance is not very probable in my opinion.

Stephen is actually a very nice guy with a sense of humor, as I have heard from a few sources.

Our Domain Name System will definitely not be compatible.

WHAT IF THERE ARE GIANT ALIEN SQUID MONSTERS THAT HAVE ION CANNONS AND THEY BLOW UP THE EARTH?
hahaha

Agreed, that'd be a most...interesting afternoon.
As for this topic, I feel he's right in many ways, but I'd like to think that a species that's reached space would have to have evolved along similar lines as humanity, which would mean they'd have to resolve their violent ways and unite as a species, which means their aggression towards others might not be as one sided as it seems. Besides, we've got nukes, and somehow, I doubt that actual space travel will be remotely like Stargate/Star Trek. More like BSG/Halo, so there won't be any orbital bombardments just yet. Show me a ship that can survive a direct impact from a high yield nuclear weapon(or three) and I'll cum all over it.

our nuclear weapons could be matches and toy guns compared to some of the things out there.

Unless they have a death star I dont think we have much to worry about.

Saying something is beyond comprehension because it's hard to understand fully is a very loose term, the speed at which computers work is beyond human comprehension but we can still use them.
If Darwin's theory about how species survive and evolve applies to other worlds, it's likely to be something we can manage. The various other ways intelligence can come into existence are possible too but not really that far out. It might be hard to comprehend other intelligences to the point we cannot imagine them, but we can certainly understand them once we encounter them.
I agree with Hawking. We should focus more on primitive lifeforms in our solar system so we can learn more about abiogenesis.

It is hardly possible to be flawlessly precise in these areas, we still have many things to discover and learn as intelligent species. It is also far from impossible for something to genuinely be beyond our comprehension, or method of our comprehension. There is a possibility for something existing in this universe that we simply will not be able to understand appropriately with our thought structure, although I do agree that "beyond comprehension" is often a rather loose term.
It's sad knowing that the chances of life are so extremely small
and yet there could be a lot of them

We could simply be unlucky by living in a very quiet place of the universe, or lucky in some ways. Or perhaps intelligent species are simply very far spread out from each other on average in this universe, simply due to it's enormous size and the amount of space, but in total there are most likely millions of them.

or nothing at all.
Fuck space
If there isn't a mass relay out passed pluto then there's no point in space exploration.

While still having them absolutely everywhere.

fuck yeah this is the truth
I must admit, I really freaking liked Mass Effect 2. I will probably play the first one next.
