• Stephen Hawking: Don't talk to aliens

Also, I disagree with Hawking on that they would most likely be raiding planets for resources. An alien species that has evolved far enough to travel close to or faster than the speed of light would probably be able to convert matter into sub-atomic particles, put them back again in different compositions and thus creating other materials. With this kind of technology it would be inefficient to raid Earth, as they could easily convert the materials from a gas giant or a sun into whatever they like. [editline]01:18PM[/editline] In other words, a replicator like the one from Star Trek.

But yeah, I doubt earth has anything particularity exotic that can't be found else where on lifeless planets if raw resources are needed.
Yeah we need to kill the messages transmitting our location and focus heavily on spacecraft. We are floating through space completely defenseless against alien and natural hazards. We need to have colonies in places other than Earth to prevent singular events from bringing about the end of human kind.

There just isn't anything about earth resource-wise which makes it that unique. Just about anything could be obtained elsewhere.
Actually the difference in races by looking at genetic code is barely noticeable. Just take the monkey vs human example. We share the same genetic code up to 95%.
That's what I am trying to say. Putting this into contrast with how different aliens possibly could be shows how small chance diseases have to spread between two interstellar races.
While most of what he said is possible, aliens "raiding our planet for resources" is just ridiculous. How could they possibly benefit from some random planet out on the edge of the galaxy... Surely if they have the technology to travel such distances... nevermind, I'm sure several people have already stated this.
Well what if life supporting planets are rare? That would make the Earth pretty valuable to an alien race looking for a quick colony.
Well what if life supporting planets are rare? That would make the Earth pretty valuable to an alien race looking for a quick colony.
*supports our life, not theirs.
Because a man in a wheelchair was needed to state the obvious.
*supports our life, not theirs.
Life will be the same everywhere cause thats what Star Trek and the bible has taught me.
Life will be the same everywhere cause thats what Star Trek and the bible has taught me.
Actually I am afraid that bible doesn't ever mention ANY life on any other world than earth. [editline]01:09PM[/editline] If these days bible interpretations don't even deny it.
what if that dude is right about Columbus and they gave us a forun desease and it wiped us out and we thought it was freindly i wouldnt trust them hell would they trust us if we were there
our nuclear weapons could be matches and toy guns compared to some of the things out there.
Unless it's biological(and even then, there are survivors) or it destroys the entire planet, the Human race will survive, albeit at a drastically reduced population, and the nukes would fly freely, destroying all who oppose us. And then there shall be cake.
What if they're a completely peaceful species that has evolved beyond the need for violence and we freak out and kill them all? Also, why don't aliens wear clothes? I mean, are we all going to walk around naked in a million years or something?

As long as they accounted for the fact that we may decide to throw things at them, I'm sure they could defend against it. We need to find the lost protean technology at mars.
Because a man in a wheelchair was needed to state the obvious.
:geno: Do you know who Stephen Hawking is? He's not just "a man in a wheelchair".
What if humans are the most advanced race in the explorable universe? It's not impossible. Anyway aliens anywhere moooost likely had envronmental competetion during their evolution...I would bet that every species in the universe has some sensation of self-preservation over protection of others. If it weren't for natural selection the earth would be a barren mess.
What if humans are the most advanced race in the explorable universe? It's not impossible.
Probably not though, we're a late bloomer species. We've only reached this level of civilisation in the last 5th of our planets lifespan.
Probably not though, we're a late bloomer species. We've only reached this level of civilisation in the last 5th of our planets lifespan.
Last fifth? If the entire existence of Earth was an hour, all of human history happened in the last hundredth of a second. [editline]11:05AM[/editline] Here's a nice graph of the history of the universe. Note how small human history is. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/HMm7f.gif[/img_thumb]

Anybody who's played a 4X game would realize having only one planet is a horrible idea.
Aliens will most likely be varelse.
Why would the aliens raid our planet for resource? The comparison to America is kinda stupid. There was only one additional continent, but there are trillions of planets, many of which have more resources than Earth. There is no reason why they would have to destroy us.
