I have a knife at home but the only thing I use it for is opening boxes/parcels.
Well let me answer these with a question of my own: is killing/stabbing the only thing knives are meant for?
well no but why would you carry around a knife on the assumption that you would need to cut rope or whatever just as you're walking down the street? just as a utility you need kind of a reason to carry one around all the time, especially when you're like twelve years old

I had a knife to sharpen my pencils, and a few others for wood and linoleum, but they weren't hunting knifes soooooo...

Fuuuck...
see the only two reasons i can think of an eleven year old wanting to carry a knife with him everywhere he goes is if he's a child soldier or if he's come up with an overly elaborate fantasy necessitating its use. like you don't wanna hurt anyone cos you're eleven, so it must be stray dogs that you want to shank! i mean, it's gotta be, otherwise you wouldn't have a reason to carry around your sick lever-assisted matte black knife, which you are super educated on the applications of.
only you never got out of that fantasy, so what was once a dumb kid with a very dangerous toy is now an adult carrying around a weapon in his pocket that he's always been fairly certain he'll one day use to disembowel a dog or two, or perhaps get himself killed because he's still mentally eleven.
Or it could be that I was from a young age given a narrative by my parents of the dangers of the world and my possible demise if I'm not prepared, so they bought the first one for me (a 2 inch locking-blade partially serrated knife) for use in emergencies only.
They included the above, and also attempted kidnapping, and cutting a seatbelt or child restraint after a car accident I've witnessed. I was specifically responding to his statement that using a knife under any circumstances would get you killed: also, the criteria for me using a knife against another person as I said require the immediate probable death of me or another civilian. Not exactly the disturbed persecution complex you make it out to be. If I were being mugged without the statement or indication that they intended to severely harm or kill me whether I cooperated or not, I would just hand over my money and things. It's just stuff.
Sort of a similar approach that America has to gun possession, but revolving around a knife and it's utility.
The second knife I came to own (and the one that's in my pocket today) was chosen because I realized that a knife that I needed two hands to effectively and reliably open compromised me in many situations, and that having one that could be opened with a small flick of the wrist meant I had the ability to get it out with one hand would allow me to use it even if my other arm were injured or pinned. The fact that it is now very quiet comes from years of wear and tear on the locking mechanism eventually smoothing out the edges to remove the audible click it had when I first purchased it.

Such as cutting a seatbelt after a car accident, using the metal handle to break a car window with a baby locked inside and suffering in 100+ degree weather, or anything like that?
When I was fourteen or fifteen, a drunk neighbor backed out of his driveway and hit another vehicle before tearing off. He made it about 400 feet before he collided with a parked pickup truck in a driveway and flipped over in a yard on the next street over. Me and my mother were the first on the scene, and she requested my knife so she could cut his shoulder strap after she assessed that he was fundamentally intact, but was struggling to breathe from the way he was hanging from his seatbelt.
I handed it to her, and she called over a few neighbors to support him while she cut him loose. He was too drunk and stunned to put up much resistance, so they forced him lay flat on his back in the yard near the vehicle until the police and ambulance arrived.
Grow up in a very violent city and see if you don't think carrying a knife is a good idea. Whether you are armed or not, you're still going to get attacked in a lot of places.

True, but in a lot of places, conflict is already escalated past that.

True - However, in a situation where you are almost certainly going to die or be disfigured for life it would be nice to have a fulcrum to help you change the situation. Perhaps you are okay with suddenly being dead or disabled because someone or some dog selected you, but I would like the chance to do everything I can to survive. I believe in no afterlife, and this existence is the only one I get.
If a dog is latched onto one of my arms and I can get the chance to slip my knife in between its ribs or under its jaw, I will take that chance. If someone comes into a building I am in shooting rather than demanding money and blocking the only exit, I would like to have the chance to potentially catch them off guard and save other lives, if not my own. These may not be common situations where you live, but where I live situations can get pretty fucked, really fast.
Why is it so hard to comprehend that I'm not talking about muggings or a drunk looking to brawl, I'm taking end-game situations for self defense. As I said, I would never brandish my knife if I truly needed to defend myself. The situation would already be so critical that by the time I used it, that it would be justified.
