There's at least 4 guns for every licensed person in this country. Owning 2 guns isn't uncommon, especially not the two he has, pump shotguns are quite common, one of the most popular kinds, and whether that's a Mini-14 or an M305, both are very commonplace guns.

The M305 isn't a shotgun, it's what Norinco calls their version of the M-14, and it's not an assault rifle unless it has auto capabilities, which it's likely that one doesn't. As I said above, both guns he has are quite commonplace and popular.

Which is the problem, even then it doesn't make much sense. They restrict "pistol" calibers to 357. unless you get an exemption, but rifles are free game pretty much up to 50. Ten round magazine restricts on firearms, but if i join a collectors club I can get high capacity magazines legally along with restricted firearms ("concealable" pistols etc). I could write a report on how stupid the laws are, but its pointless.
TL;DR: Gun laws in Australia suck, but I'm not getting shot on the street so im happy.
