I would improve GFWL by removing it from all PC games. That would make it soooo much better!
Permanent, I heard that it used to be a year.
The parental controls are silly too. I'm 17 years old and I am not allowed to buy add-ons for Fallout 3. Well if they don't want my money...
People have mostly accepted Steam’s existence, even when its intrusions to your gaming are much more egregious than GFWL’s. (For instance, if you get banned from Steam for one of their odd reasons (like Paypal screwing up) then you lose all your games, forever. Potentially thousands of pounds worth, taken from you, and there’s little you can do. A GFWL ban will still give you access to games in their offline modes. Which is a pretty big deal, really.)
RPS respect points for attacking a fanboy culture with a solid argument. That and VAC's broad-banning implementation are the only 2 things actually bad about Steam. If only fanboys would stop their sperging for a moment and realize this, steam would be among my favorite applications.

No exceptions.

But I don't know, I've made/attempted purchases with several methods (even with a paypal linked to a closed bank account by mistake) and never had any problems.
Perhaps they tried to do the same thing as with Blizzard's payment method. If you chose netherlands and automatische ingrosso or something like that, you could buy everything in their store and play it for a ~week before they closed your account.
Except the main flaw with that is you don't loose all your games, and if you get VAC banned it's your fault. No exceptions.
The problem is it severely cripples your game experience (understandable for the game you did hack in) but bans across the same engine which can include anywhere from 1 to 2 to 5 different games at any given time. I don't understand the purpose to this and more than that it's pretty clear it doesn't work at all. People still hack like crazy and vigilant admins are still the best defense against hackers. However, when they talk about disabling accounts it could be something simple like the PayPal payment API never "talking" to steam servers which would set off a flag that you didn't pay, they probably have some automatic process behind this. Then you have to deal with steam support and your game is effectively stolen from you for a day or more (in fact all your steam games).
Microsoft should be smart by releasing their games exclusivily for GFWL. This way they have a better reason for porting Gears of War 3, Alan Wake and Halo: Reach to PC ;)
GFWL is just Microsoft's shitty attempt at cashing in on digital distribution. Not to mention Microsoft deliberately puts restrictions on developers that use GFWL, and treat them just like they treat console developers: Forcing them to price DLC and free content. No sane developer should ever make their game run on GFWL.
Relic's biggest mistake when they made DoW2 :sigh:
Every time i see GFWL they've changed how it looks completely. They can't make up their minds.
It's been the same for two years or so. At least it is on Viva Pinata and Halo 2 Vista. Honestly, I think they do need to do an overhaul, though. The GFWL overlay seems to lag for me on both of my computers on Halo 2 Vista (for instance: I'll type a message and it won't begin to show up in the text box until 10 seconds later), yet the game itself runs perfectly smooth. Saving in single player games is a nuisance. I understand not being able to get achievements while offline (I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that 360s locally store their profiles and the PC version probably can't), but not being able to save is just dumb. However, not being able to play multiplayer without being signed in makes sense. I honestly have no idea why people are complaining about this. One of the points of a gamertag is so you can have a profile you use across all games, would you rather have a different login for each game and defeat the point? They need to bring parties into games for windows live. It's been on the 360 forever, and I'm tired of having to hop off of Halo 2 Vista to play (the much worse multiplayer in my opinion) Reach because my friends want to talk in a party. I don't use the marketplace, so I have no idea how it is (I've bought all 3 of my games out of Gamestop). Honestly, it doesn't get in my way when playing Halo 2 Vista besides the little lag and no party system. I don't really ever have any problems with Gears of War (besides nobody playing it) or Viva Pinata (speaking of which, come spring break, I actually need to play more than an hour of), but I probably would be pissed about the saves thing too if my campus didn't have an amazing wireless infrastructure. They need to loosen their grip on content and patches, though. I'd rather just see GFWL as an integrated social tool than a distribution platform like STEAM. Honestly, with a lot of work that way, I could very well see Microsoft turning GFWL around into something big. If they actually do that though remains to be seen.
Then you have to deal with steam support and your game is effectively stolen from you for a day or more (in fact all your steam games).
All your games are stored on your computer in the Steamapps folder inside Steams program files folder. Any game that isn't running on the Source Engine is fully installed like it normally would be if you got it from a CD, just inside the Steamapps folder where it is fully accessible. Steam only links itself to the .exe file of the game. It does not contain restrictive DRM methods on it that makes it unplayable without Steam.
A week before DOW2: Retribution was released i tought about playing DOW2, but i stopped after 8 times restarting the game for GFWL updates.
Thats just promoting piracy. They lost thousands of purchasers with putting that piece of shit on Bulletstorm.
Only good thing about Games For Windows Live is that you don't need the client running to play games you bought off the Marketplace. Valve are you listening
Run steam game, minimize, task manager, processes, shut down "steam.exe"
