I don't see why people are comparing this incident with him visiting survivors. Anyone who understands that acting and other arts require a higher sense of concentration and dedication, can understand that it's usually incredibly agitating when something or someone distracts you while you're in your groove.

Bale - "How's the recovery going?"
patient - "It's going fine! I loved your work in (Insert such films)"

Apparently one of the folks on Reddit works at the hospital and he said that Bale was very courteous when he came to visit and was actually very nervous that his appearance would trigger memories of what happened and he would hurt them, rather than help them. He wasn't able to visit a couple of the more unstable patients, but those he did visit he got some good one-on-one time to just talk to them. Really heartwarming stuff.

I can only imagine, someone's probably commented on one of the victim's Facebook pictures with Christian Bale, "You're so lucky I'm jealous."

Only to realize after posting the victim is anything but lucky.

Fucking awesome. Christian Bale is a great actor and a really cool person. I'm glad (or so Warner Bros says) he went there on his own accord.
