I know my Bible, I did not get them mixed up, I was saying that Hebrew Laws were extremely progressive for their own times. Israel had a welfare system and an aversion towards kings, marked by the books constant regret and condemnation of all the kings, including Solomon and David. The people who wrote most of the Old Testament were convinced that the only reason their country was taken over in 589 BCE by the Babylonians was because they had proclaimed a king.
Actually the Israelite people strongly wanted Kings. It was the prophets and God who were not eager for them to have Kings, but in the end they granted the Israelites their requests and Samuel was told to anoint a King, which is where Saul comes in.
The people realized they were wrong after they clamored for a king. They realized that they had replaced God with a human as their king, and that therefore God would no longer protect them against foreigners.
