You can be born into a Roma family and still be Romani regardless of your personality or lifestyle, and in that way it is essentially an ethnicity.

I never really thought about where the "gypsies" came from until I started reading about it here on facepunch. We call them sigøynere, which is translated to "gypsies" (google translate). The word "sigøynere" doesn't feel derogatory to me. But confusingly gypsies kinda does. I always viewed them as people who just like to travel around like we did before airplanes and such, which if anything is kinda cool, good for them ish. To me, this never had anything to do with Romans until I started seeing threads on facepunch about it. The only "bad" thing I've heard and seen them to outside the internet is just that they sit outside on the street with a cup asking for money. The reason this is seen as bad is because there's we have a system that's supposed to help you if you're very poor (no roof above your head, no food etc). So if you're on the streets begging for money you're "lying" or you aren't a Norwegian citizen. (I'm not saying this system is 100% perfect, that's another thing.) I personally don't know enough to have an opinion on this, this is just from what I've picked up.

However, 'Zygany', 'Zygani', or 'Szygani', whichever spelling that's used, is a pretty archaic word in English. In fact, I think the only time I've ever seen it used is in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Is that really so surprising, though? They're universally known for being dishonest thieves. A lot of them live up to the stereotype because they don't have any other choice because the governments don't want anything to do with them. Because of this, a lot of peoples experiences with romas have been largely negative. Everyone builds stereotypes based on their past experiences, so this bad image of theirs continues in an endless cycle. Of course, like usual, it doesn't apply to [I]everyone.[/I] It does however apply to a lot, because as said, they are forced into it. There have been documentaries made where they even show that some of them raise their children to become thieves because they simply can't get a job to sustain themselves at all.
