Uh. It wasn't a joke. When the old generation dies, social change happens. This has happened with every generation. It was one of the reasons why when those from the 1800s started dying off, there was the civil rights movement.
Granted, it's a very slow process and small pockets may remain but sooner or later we'll get rid of most of the racists and bigots in America out of pure shame. Again, granted that's gonna take a helluva lot longer to get rid of in the southern states. Look at the mayor of the town in Missouri where that guy shot three Jewish people while shouting,"Heil Hitler" and shit. Mayor McFucktard then says that he agreed with the guy's premises and principals and it turns out the Mayor is a white supremacist who thinks Jews are destroying America too. Like...what the fuck?! His own words: "I am a friend of Frazier Miller helping to spread his warnings," wrote Clevenger. "The Jew-run medical industry has succeeded in destroying the United State's workforce." The letter continued. "Made a few Jews rich by killin' us off." He also spoke of the "Jew-run government backed banking industry turned the U.S into the world's largest debtor nation." Yeah...still a lot of work to do.
why is it assumed that every generation that came before the present one is considered more bigoted? what if we end up going in the opposite direction in the future?
It's an interesting modern phenomena that started in the 1960's-1970's. I don't really know of any other human civilization in history where it was common for the younger generation to generally despise the ideas of the older generations. It's usually the opposite: the older one is the more wise they are assumed to be. I've always found it interesting to ask young people, of which I'm included, the question: "Do you believe that you will be wiser at the age of, say, 40 than you are today?" In my experience they've almost unanimously answered "Yes." For some reason they don't quite understand how ridiculous it is to think that you will get wiser as you age, but that every generation before you didn't.
Personally, I can't wait for the current American political science tumblr generation to finish highschool and get into real politics. Not a priviledge will go unchecked. But seriously, "waiting for the older generation to die off" is a futile strategy. "Wisdom" tends to come with age. In the Netherlands, we have a sort of saying that pretty much goes: If you're young and don't vote Left, you are a heartless bastard. If you are old and vote left, you have no sense of the value of money. Young people tend to be Leftwing because they have little actual responsibility. They have no house, no fulltime job, no mortgage, no insurances, no mouths to feed. They don't really have any self interest yet, so they fight for equality. However, once you've grown up and you have all these things, you've worked your hands to the bone to build yourself a life, you really don't want to see it all go to shit in order to make life better for the bottom tiers of society. You suddenly have self interest and you want to maintain the quality of life that you worked for, so you become Rightwing. Then again, Rightwing by Dutch standards would still be considered Far Left by American standards. So I have no real idea how much that would apply to the US.

Either there's a massive difference between American Dutch and those living in the Netherlands or some other oddity is going on.
