Living in SE Massachusetts, my family has no idea what this entails. It's kind of a bit late to start preparing now, I suppose, but nothing like this has hit my area - not in the last fifty years, anyway.
Crap, I hope this shrinks, or something...
Seeing some ominous looking clouds here in Maryland...
Apparently the news team from my city is going nationwide to give reports on Irene soon

By the time it gets to you it's going to be rather small. It may knock out power but you don't need to go into full hurricane disaster mode. Just gather some batteries and candles and make sure you got some food that won't spoil should your power somehow be knocked out for a few days. I don't know how the power grid is up there but When Ike hit us it took out the power for a week in most areas(some deep rural areas even longer) because it pretty much destroyed the whole grid for Houston. I doubt it will be bad for you unless the entire eastern seaboard is powered by a single power plant that's within range of the hurricanes full attack.
[release]Irene Updates (Wilmington is in the Threat Level: High)[/release]
Irene is hitting now, Power went out for around hour. My street is flooded.
I'll be updating this post (As long as i have power.)
9:42 - Strong winds, -snip- (Didn't mean to put thunder), and small street flooding. House is creaking a bit, These are still the bands, It's probably going to get worse as the night progresses.
11:12 - Rain is getting harder and wind is stronger
12:20 - Seems a tad calm now

I like it how people find the time to post about what they are doing no matter the situation.

I'm just trying to keep people updated.
May the force be with you.
Heh. Yeah, I'm NW of Baltimore. Just hoping we don't get raped with flooding.

It's comforting to be able to connect with the outside world during an event like this.
It's comforting to be able to connect with the outside world during an event like this.
Twitter is a great tool for that.
So it looks like it's only a category one now?
So it looks like it's only a category one now?
Not from what I saw just now, looks like it's a Category 2.
C'mon, guys, let's be optimistic for a moment!
Maybe the hurricane will pick up New Jersey (or at least the Jersey Shore) and throw it out in the ocean somewhere, far away from the mainland!
(No offense to anyone here who happens to live in Jersey)
there were literally 3000 boats on trailers hauling down I-495 today. Everyone's taking their boats out of the water and bringing them to safer places.

One can dream...
Dear sweet Jesus I hope so.
But then we'd have a chemical spill in the ocean to deal with...

Don't want those boats being tossed around like toys in a tub.

As of right now it's a category two, with sustained winds at around 100mph.

What are you doing boats, You're not cars. Get off the highway. You don't even have tires.
Things like these bring a community together, it seems. This whole day today we had people going around out neighborhood offering to go to the store for the other to buy water/food/etc, while some 14 year old girls were watching the little kids, me and my dad were going around fixing generators, neighbors letting the others park cars in their driveways so tree branches and whatnot wouldn't fall on them, everyone was making sure we got through it all alright. Same thing happened with Isabel a while back, brought everyone together. Hell of a thing, really.

there was supposed to be a I-695 in Boston but they abandoned it

Perhaps not surprisingly, human nature appears to drive us to be extremely empathetic to those we are sharing a disaster with. On the radio today, I was smiling the whole time as the announcers were announcing precautions and that "We'll all get through this together."
Though I did have a woman come into Gamestop tonight and get pissed at us for not stocking D batteries or an Ipod Charging dock. As she walked out of the store, she said "Thanks for your help..........well actually, thanks for not helping me."
Murder was momentarily contemplated.
In live up in Pennsylvania, and even here people are still freaking out about it.
I wouldn't mind if Irene hit us hard though; It would be nice to get the Weekend off Work for once.

I work as a Part-Time Cashier at a Pets Store.
I'm always scheduled to work all of Saturday and Sunday.
