raining hard in northeastern MA, most of my town has lost power, i haven't.
Delaware here, I am safe in Pittsburgh since Friday, however it is more than likely there is 6-12 inches in my basement.
Ugh, all the hurricanes have been going right past my town, we never get anything here!
Ugh, all the hurricanes have been going right past my town, we never get anything here!
Why would you want to get hit by a hurricane? We got a lot of rain from it and all the roads are flooded, some of the power is out in the town, and the wind damaged some houses.
The worst has passed my area. Tree branches scattered about, but nothing much else happened. Any flooding that's happening is not going to hit me no matter how hard it tries, thanks to that island-long depression in the land known as Sunrise Highway. Still, I barely got any sleep last night because of the noise.
Isn't Irene a Category 1 (the weakest category)? I mean, it won't be that bad will it? I guess the big thing is that it's going into immensely populated areas and the damages will be crazy, but i don't think that many people will die...except people that are stupid and stay even though they're told to leave.

If this hurricane hit Florida it would have hit as a category 3. You can't compare storms because every storm is different. The damage it can do is not dependent on a Saffir-Simpson number because a storm winding down from a category 3 to a 2 is only one mile per hour slower in wind speed. People will see that and say "oh it's just a category 2" when in reality it's just as strong as a category 3. Especially in storms like this that were at one point a large Category 3, almost a category 4, they still got that large size and pressure, it's just that the wind speeds have gone down. I said before that hurricane Ike was a category 2 when it made land fall and it destroyed most of Houston's power grid, and 112 people died and 34 people are still missing. It was so powerful because it was just a category 4 just a few days earlier, and therefore was still very large and had a powerful storm surge. TL;DR once a storm maxes out the number looses reliability on how damaging the storm really is.
irene didn't do much in my town. felt like a regular thunderstorm that said, i hope MTA resumes bus/railroad service ASAP ! if not railroad, at least buses
irene didn't do much in my town. felt like a regular thunderstorm that said, i hope MTA resumes bus/railroad service ASAP ! if not railroad, at least buses
MTA huh? Where do you live fellow Marylander?
New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority :v: [editline]28th August 2011[/editline] i didn't know there are multiple MTA's
Metropolitan Transportation Authority is best MTA anyways weathers getting better. only strong winds happening every 10 minutes or so. the death count is now 14; http://abclocal.go.com/wtvg/story?section=news/national_world&id=8331719
Got nothing but light wind and rain. Best of wishes for others that weren't so lucky. Had to add this.
So did anything actually happen with this Hurricane? It seems to me like it just kind of pussied out.
So did anything actually happen with this Hurricane? It seems to me like it just kind of pussied out.
At least 21 people died, millions of dollars in damage. Yeah, nothing happened. http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/08/29/irene.aftermath/index.html?iref=BN1&hpt=hp_t1

Okay so 20 people died. That's nothing compared other disasters. And as for damages, well it looks like there's going to be some job openings coming up. (Looking on the bright side)

Power is still out in Richmond. I heard about 300k homes don't have any. On the bright side we just borrowed a generator and my school still doesn't have any power. I hope other FPers are doing well.

Is Virginia currently going without internet? I have a friend there that hasn't talked to me since the day before the hurricane, he said he wouldn't be preparing for the storm so I'm kinda worried about him, especially since deaths have been reported.

[editline]29th August 2011[/editline]
So did anything actually happen with this Hurricane? (Looking on the bright side)
Hurricanes have gotten a lot less lethal now that evacuations are mandatory. Before it was everyone stay at their own risk and idiots would go out and get themselves killed. Now its just everyone get the fuck out and they've saved a lot of lives with this strategy. I don't think after Katrina and Ike, that a governor of a state is going to not take every precaution for any hurricane.
Once they make houses that grow legs and evacuate themselves, then we'll be golden.
This one designer made a house that was on vertical rails that could float up something like 15 feet. Looked like a mobile home with two big poles sticking up on one side.

Finally back up after about 40 hours without power. Storm made a friggin' mess. Downed trees and power lines everywhere, including a 70ft oak tree that fell right in the middle of our driveway (lengthwise!). Will have photos and maybe a video in a bit.
