plenty of other options, labour had a plan for dealing with the deficit that wouldn't have the danger of putting the economy back into recession
but conservatives thought the poor were too exempt
oh please this is absolute bullshit
Labour still would have cut spending and raised taxes
the only difference is that they would have started doing it later rather than now, meaning that we would need far more severe cuts
Does the United States have a federal goods and services tax like we do in Canada, or just the state taxes?
We have PST and GST.
No each individual state has a different rate for sales tax, in fact it's even different by county, mine is 6.4%, .1% higher than the county next to it.

more investment now would mean a stronger economy which would be able to reduce the deficit without as many severe cuts
or what about less severe cuts over a long period of time
I'm happy about this :
He said his "tough but fair" Budget was "unavoidable" although he told MPs in the Commons there would be no extra tax on alcohol, tobacco and fuel.
Although those would be the easiest things to tax more
2.5% mightn't seem to big an increase of VAT, but it still looks pretty big. Bloody snake-charmers must've bided their bloody time...
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank
vat is a pain in my arse especially because it made my computer COST FUCKING LOADS

investment in what?
they've cut some taxes on business now
they're cutting public sector jobs because it's simply unsustainable for the state to be this large
or what about less severe cuts over a long period of time
we are paying billions and billions of pounds worth of interest on the debt we owe
the faster we cut it, the smaller the interest rates become
the longer we leave it the more we pay at higher rates than we normally would
I just turned the news on, there's a lot of public sector workers protesting in my city
Isn't VAT at 0% or 5% for essential goods? How does that affect the poor so badly, seeing as food, gas etc attracts a zero or lowered rate?
They aren't so poor & needy if they can afford luxuries.
They already raised the VAT in my country from 18% to 21% in 2009 :D

Essential goods such as food and clothing have no VAT.

That's a bit of a silly thing to say. Yes things like toilet roll and tampons is at 0% but what about a chair? or a carpet?
Latvia has a VAT of 21%, sucks major balls.
ohh ouch :(
The protesters have signs that say, "Nick Clegg: Why do you hate my kids so much?"
I'm glad about the benefits cut.
Good, it will encourage people to work.
The benefits is going to tackle disability claimers mainly, I know tons of people who claim fake disability allowance and still work, its pretty much a joke. This new budget will have people who go around checking up to see if they are sponging or actually disabled. What this benefit cut is actually going to do is encourage people who live off welfare to work while still earning aid by the government (i.e. not working when they are fully able too), while tackling and combating people who fake illness and live off welfare. I even know someone who earns more money from the governments welfare by looking after her disabled wife (whom is in a wheelchair) than his previous job, he decided he would get more money applying as her 'career'.
Fuck Labours sympathy lifestyle, it has literally turned this country into a bunch of dopes and abusers.
The reform will save £11 billion, there is also help with cut people from income tax.
Pensions are also excellent are going to raise in earning, instead of Labours pathetic 75p increase, this is going to actually allow pensioners to live properly.
A lot of public sector jobs where a joke too, we even have a public sector department that managed Labours hope to join the EU currency (which was thankfully now been shut down by the Tories)
We don't even have sales tax here in New Hampshire.
Fuck all y'all.
Most stuff is still cheaper than I've seen in other countries however. An increase of 2.5% doesn't do that much and it raises I think around an extra 12 billion pounds each year. The benefits in my opinion have always been too high and deserved to be cut. You should not be able to just live off benefits and get everything for free such as not paying for courses (which they drop out of usually), university for free (which most drop out like my cousin) it's crazy. In England the middle class is the worst as lower class you get benefits and can live off them as I said, higher you have the money to pay for everything but middle class you get no benefits and get fucked over.

University is free in Scotland, and it works perfectly well here. But I agree that the increase isn't that big, and a cut in benefits is good and should have been done earlier. We can't get out of this deficit without cuts. They need to be done.

Make a carpet from toilets rolls, a sofa from tampons.
Sorted.

It's very hard to live off benefits. My mum was made redundant a few years ago, and going from nearly £500 a week to less than £100 a week is not easy to do, especially if you had children, a mortgage, bills and a car to run. I'm sure many of the lower class would gladly swap places.
Latvia has a VAT of 21%, sucks major balls.
But no VAT on potato, staple of Latvia diet!
what the fuck else can they do?
seriously people need to educate themselves
we have a £400 billion deficit and the government is spending more money than it is receiving in taxation, and unless you want this country to go bankrupt, there is no other way to solve this problem
We have a 11 trillion dollar deficit.
Beat that.
Can't we sell Scotland back to the Scottish and Northern Ireland back to the Irish?
I don't see the problem. It's a small percentage increase which will help to cut the defecit faster.
Everyone's all like "OH MAN THIS SUCKS" well then what the fuck are they supposed to do? We can't just have a ton of defecit lying around forever, and whether we enjoy this government time or not, it is for the better in the long term.
It's time to buy all the big expensive stuff this year!
Atleast you have a system that's understandable.
Here in Finland for literacy VAT is 8%, but if you include a CD with it, it jumps to 22% and then I think they reduced the VAT on foods at some point and now I have no fucking idea what it's now, and if you go to a fast-food place, if you take the food with you, the VAT is lower than if you eat at the place.
Good Job its not till next year towards the end of this year im definitely getting a new computer then before i get fucked in the ass even more by the rise.
Fuckin tories! and all they're we only give a shit about the rich and ourselves shit!
That's crazy. We pay a 6% sales tax here in Michigan and I think that's too high.
8% sales tax here in Washington.
lol capital gains
