• Apple bans Blu-ray from Macs: Discs are 'holding us back'
people still watch movies on discs? what is this? 2001?
DVD/Blu-Ray is still convenient as hell. I'm not converting to all-digital until the selection, quality, and convenience is the same as physical media. Currently, the only benefit I've found for digital is price. Also, I'll admit I like having a chunk of wall devoted to DVD/Blu-Ray cases.
Macs are for people with money and little sense, remember. These are people who can afford to pay for nearly uncapped fiber connections just because it's the most expensive one they can buy. Of course they'd not care about having a blu-ray drive.
My Desktop build originally didn't have a DVD RW drive and I was able to get by without it for some time, I bought the one thats in my machine now to install Mass Effect 3. It has also saved my ass a couple of times for when something has happened to my Windows install. Issues occuring here that I see right out of the box: 1. Reinstalling Operating System ( complete HD failure, HD replacement, Boot camp Windows install, etc) 2. Disc based media 3. Non Technical people getting use to living without a disc drive or working with the alternatives Sure you can go out and buy a USB Drive, or you can do it my complicated as fuck way and map a network based DVD Drive to it. Either way it's going to cost you a couple of extra pennies when you buy that $1000 laptop. Don''t get me wrong here in a Office enviroment a Mac is pretty good solution and nearly idiot proof, but my main issue here is that if your going to start taking components out then you need to deck the price a tad bit atleast.
Its interesting how apple says that disk drives are holding them back, yet my desktop has PS/2 ports on the back still. I may not use my disk drive often, but I still do. What I don't do is use any accessory that still uses PS/2.
That sucks, I had to buy a new keyboard when I bought this P-67 FTW board from eVGA because there wasn't any PS/2 ports. Then they came out with the P-77 FTW and, behold, PS/2 ports. All of my hate.
