Can someone make an Android OS that's pretty much the interface of the Pip-Boy 3000 except with an extra category for calls and texting tia
wouldn't this HAVE to be in speaker mode all the time? if not, you wouldn't be able to hear it and speak on it at the same time

bluetooth headset
You know, these wouldn't be half-bad if they weren't full-fledged smartphones. I can see something cheap-ish with a tiny OLED screen that can show you the weather and time on standby, and pickup calls to a bluetooth headset, and that had the size/shape of Dick Tracy's watchphone.

That thing in the OP though would be better as a case that you can put around your normal smartphone and strap to your arm (which exists and is cheap) instead of something that you always have to have strapped to you.
bluetooth headset
What is even the point of this then?

Having something easily accessible. Hence why you have a hands free set.

if that was any sort of a problem at all I don't think the whole "mobile telephone" thing would've caught on in the first place

It's called a Pebble (minus the OLED screen)

Though it's more of an extension of your phone.
Watch phones have existed for a while now, and most have a way more preferable, smaller, form factor, so I really don't see this taking off

Still a hundred percent more durable than the one they officially made, which breaks if you flip it upside down.
Having something easily accessible. Hence why you have a hands free set.
yeah but you still have to be wearing a bluetooth headset at all times and look like a tool OR grab it whenever you want to talk, which defeats the purpose of a "hands-free" phone
Check out the Omate Truesmart, it is like this but way better.

that would be amazing, someone go tell HTC to make a pip-boy instead of a smart watch

the point is that this one runs android, and is a standalone device unlike most others

There's probably a ROM somewhere on XDA, go nuts.
I can see this being useful if you have a job where you get in and out of cars a lot, or for during fitness . Other than that I'd feel weird with that strapped to my wrist.
This thing looks half as efficient as a regular phone. You can only type with one hand? There goes shooting out quick texts or emails.
Terrible gimmick. Stuff like Pebble is remotely useful, because pulling out your phone when you're running or exercising isn't a good idea, but a full phone on your wrist? What's the point?
If the Pebble can expand it's features a bit I think that's the way of the future. Right now I have a Pebble on my left arm and a FitBit One on my right. Make them both sync so I can toss the FitBit in my pocket or ditch it completely and I'm a happy boy.

Why don't I just tape my phone onto my wrists and save $335
Done.

Looks better than the watch in question.
I used to sell watch phones in 2008 and those little portable speakers too that got really popular. It's funny how I can try to talk people into buying this stuff years before the big retailers get them, and no one will bite or even tell me how stupid my products are, and then a few years later those same people are showing them to me like they are new. I should have stuck with my small business but I gave it up when I found out my wife was pregnant for full time work. Look at me now - unemployed with no capital to invest.
At the moment I haven't seen a smartwatch that isn't "gimmicky", but I think with more refined designs/functionality they could catch on fairly well (Not one like this though, people would rather have their phone in their purse/pockets than strapped to their wrists, and it requires cuts from the design)
The one I've been most interested in is the Qualcomm Toq, mainly because it has a Mirasol display (Think e-Ink crossed with OLED), but even then that's more a prototype than anything, the displays still aren't there yet.
I would be perfectly fine with a standard analog watch that pairs to your phone and vibrates whenever you get a notification. My phone is never off limits and I often miss notifications because I can't feel the vibrate or I left it on silent.

nobody tell the nexus, it will be flooded with badly made porn apps within the hour
I had no idea smartwatches were a thing until a few Facepunch threads started cropping up about them.
They just seem a bit silly/impractical to me, honestly.
As opposed to looking like a tool holding the newest iPadSuperMega or Galaxy Ultimate Mega to your face?
For real bluetooth is so convenient you sound like a tool for even questioning it.
convenient or not they make you look ridiculous
convenient or not they make you look ridiculous
You need no help in that department.
My phone makes phone calls, and making phone calls is the last thing I would do on it
