Feels good, doesn't it?
Hey it's the guy that thinks the Dota 2 team should stop working on Dota 2 because he doesn't like Dota 2.
While having never played Dota 2.
Hey it's the guy that thinks the Dota 2 team should stop working on Dota 2 because he doesn't like Dota 2.
I'm sure there was meant to be a point to this, but it appears to have escaped me.
it sounds fucking terrible - aren't games supposed to be fun?

Dota 2 operates on the idea that fun that is easily obtainable is not anywhere near as satisfying as fun coming from mastering a complex set of rules. The first few steps will be very much unfun, but as soon as the mechanics are grasped, the game opens up to massively wide variety and an extremely deep and rewarding set of mechanics.
A game you can grasp and master easily isn't satisfying. The game demands your attention, but heavily rewards you in return.
Shibbey is right. Essentially, DOTA 2 is more of a hobby than a video game. It demands your attention, practice, and concentration, and forces you to put in your 110% every game. Personally, I think of it a lot like writing. If you want to become a good writer, you need to read a lot, write a lot, critique your peers' work, and have your peers critique your work. As you continue to practice, you grasp the nuances of how good writing flows - and you start to get a natural high from simply writing.
The same thing happens with DOTA, really. As you practice and immerse yourself into DOTA culture (i.e. reading guides, watching comp matches, talking about builds with other players), you start to become a better player. And, as you become a better player, you start to have a lot more fun with the intricate gameplay system found within DOTA.
Unlike writing, though, DOTA becomes an issue because your fun can be easily interrupted by an unequal skill level. If you're stacked with shitty teammates, there's not much that you can do. DOTA's enjoyability is extremely dependent on your team's skill level - as well as your own. For some players, you eventually reach a point where you can't decide whether you get more fun or stress out of playing. And constantly immersing yourself in that culture creates a scenario where people feel like they can't stop. I can't count how many times someone has said, "I'm done with DOTA; this shit is too much for me," uninstall DOTA, and then they reinstall it within 2 days.
For a lot of players, DOTA becomes an addiction very fast :v:. Some of the most volatile people in the community are addicts or rely too much on the high they get from a good game. And, instead of handling it healthily - like some sports players do when they see the same symptoms arise - they just get mad.
I'll put it out there, there's no shame in playing versus bots with some buddies if it ends up in a half hour of some good fun. It's what I've done for the past ~7 hours on my Dota 2 playtime.
Having fun is possible in Dota...
Pick Lion; Get a shadowblade; Run up to someone whilst invisible, ZAP with your finger of death, then run away giggling like a schoolgirl.
Rarely works anymore.
Rarely works anymore.
But when you do it, it is glorious!
HOORAY!... I guess?
After 2 years of playing this game, I thought there'd be something big coming up when the game launched, but I guess it's business as usual.
First game after launch, one person disconnects and another one picks PL. Fuck me.
I'm honestly not interested in this game
I played it for a while and it was fun but I'm just really not interested
The community is awful and spends most of its time bragging about how LoL sucks and it doesn't appear to have anything new besides grimdark character designs
The reason might be that this is coming from Valve, who took their flagship franchise and dove it 6 feet underground to make this thing...
No offense.
You have like no idea what you're talking about. First of all, if you're not interested, then why post? No one really cares.
Also, it doesn't sound like you've played it at all since you don't have any proper criticism other than the fact that the "community is shit". Yeah the community is pretty bad, but so is the communities for LoL and HoN. I see more LoL players bashing on Dota 2 than Dota 2 players bashing on LoL. In fact, most Dota players don't even hate LoL, they hate Riot games and Tencent, who have been constantly trying to kill both DotA and Dota 2. (See: http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1gg6jm/why_so_much_hate_for_lol/cajwsi1)
And you hate Dota 2 because Valve apparently decided to work on it instead of Episode 3/Half-Life 3? You really have no idea what you're talking about.
There's a tutorial now if that was your problem.
It's not I played lol
mobas are just bad
Yay, maybe now Valve can work on something I'm interested in. :v:
you do realize this is going to get more updates than TF2 right? Like way more.
how are people so naive?
it sounds fucking terrible - aren't games supposed to be fun?
"fucking terrible"
when it comes down to player vs. player online piece-of-shit video-games where you seek to compete with other players a little bit, in teams or whatever setting, which is fun to begin with, then Dota2 is a pretty nifty and gorgeous game at that.
for me, dota is fun because its so competitive and complex
sure its terrible if you arent reasonable at it, but you grow and learn
hell im still learning new things after playing dota and league for several years
And you hate Dota 2 because Valve apparently decided to work on it instead of Episode 3/Half-Life 3? You really have no idea what you're talking about.
yes I hate Valve VERY MUCH for that also.
wow there went my 300+ dota invites
im mad

People refuse to acknowledge that you're able to say that you don't like DOTA because of how fundamentally similar it is to LoL.

people like to do mental gymnastics to justify playing a shithouse genre that's basically an rts but with an unacceptable learning curve and a community made up of the absolute dregs of society
it boggles the mind that anyone would think they are above cod tier in actual gameplay
Of course I come into this thread and it's a shitstorm
I love Dota 2 to death but it's just proof that the playerbase is awful
-snip-
The Beta hardly meant anything considering how plentiful the the beta access keys were.
Cheers to Valve. Hopefully they win the Asian market.
The learning curve is a bit steep for people who aren't used to competitive games (like me when I first started), but my only advice is to just play with people that know their shit.
And won't lose their shit when you feed. Because, let's be honest, everyone feeds at least one game.

Yes, hundreds of thousands of people are deluding themselves into thinking they're having FUN. An amazing feat, really.
its just like people who play call of duty or angry birds gosh i hate casuals
yeah, those guys are nerds. i'm just gonna go play peggle now, that's where real pros go

Yeah and there are 50 million heroin addicts must be pretty good stuff
at least with heroin addicts there's a chance of finding someone who isn't a complete shithead
unacceptable learning curve?
dude theres a system wherein you click a few times on the guide button, you get all of your shit lined up for you, and all you have to do is deny/last hit and right click some shop items every now and then
wow that sure does sound like basically an rts but then you get shit from your teammates for buying the wrong thing or something retarded

they are hyper-competitive neckbeards who think video games are serious business and that esports aren't a massive joke

Yeah esports is a big joke that's why there is currently a 2.5million dollar prizepool for the Dota 2 International. You should take a look at the competitors too because none are neckbeards, they're probably better looking than you (chaun) and 5 of them are going to win 2.5 million dollars.
Gee I bet you wish you were good at videogames.
I lost interest in the game when I found out I was penalized for 24 hours for having to take a shit and abandoning a bot vs player game, then the next day abandoning again to eat dinner. I'm not MLG enough to skip on bodily needs to play a game for what could be upwards of 40-50 minutes. Maybe Player vs Player I'd be more understanding of how much of a dick move that is, but against bots who's taking it serious when I don't think it even really counts towards your win/losses.
It's still kind of mean to just leave your team-mates hanging, especially in a game like Dota where each champion contributes a different thing. I understand that the matches are really long and sometimes you really do have to leave, but if you think you might have to leave mid-game it's best just to leave it until you can spare the time, ie, go to the bathroom before playing or wait until after dinner to play.

I'm not going to touch that argument, it really has little to do with my point about the community. In any case you can't seriously think that the community you play with in these games are the tiny group of Asians who will win these contests, they just think they are.

No the community is mostly russians, brazilians and out of nowhere thousands of Peruvians have surfaced on the internet and have started to play Dota 2.
The community doesn't matter though. Yeah you can play with pubs, but that's like playing with pubs in any other coop game, which is what Dota 2 is.
The enemy team is always a mixed grab bag of a various assortment of asians, pubstompers, non-english speakers in english matchmaking, ect.
It doesn't even matter since all of your arguments are flawed. The dude was correct when he said you do the tutorial, everything is laid out for you, you have recommended items, you can use user created recommended builds.
If anyone yells at you, oh well. Do you get mad when someone yells at you in any other game?
That's baloney in the 15 years I've played online games no pubs have matched the rounds I've played in mobas
I'm not talking about just dota 2, like I said I only played one match
and if you get into a group god forbid the group you're playing with doesn't make up a full team
