I don't know, seems like it would make more sense if a 5/10 was considered average or mediocre considering that it's kinda in the middle between good and bad.
It would make sense. Our point that the way reviews work nowadays is awkwardly centered at 7.5
Standard grading system in US schools.
0-69: 'Fuckin' biffed it, mate'
70-79: Skin-of-the-teeth pass
80-89: Meh. Typical.
90-100: Either you cheated, you memorized the entire textbook, or you're in too easy of a class. Holy shit.
And the US schools are the only ones with this barbaric scale. No wonder students are always depressed.
at my school district the minimum grade for passing was 65. seems fair enough
Looks like it's...pretty good.
Was expecting more than three 10s from the thread title, especially since one is from Metal Gear Informer.

There's 7 if you're also considering a 5/5 = to a 10/10 aka 100%.
So per your numbers, below 70 is not actually failing.
When you get to real life, aka out of High School below 70 is basically failing. Actually, in the school I just went too below an 80 was considered failing.
Just my opinion but:
Grading games like we grade schoolchildren just makes the medium look juvenile IMO.
We need to follow the standards set by the film industry for reviews.

examples like rotten tomatoes, av club, and metacritic movies section right
all of which rate like school, 0/100 style

depends on your university. my university had a 65 average for most courses

Quite a few public colleges go by below 60 is failing. You cannot usually graduate with a D average, but you do not fail a course with a D. Trust me, I got D's in several state colleges.
oh i bet you did!!!!
Yeah, I've made mistakes. But my point is that many post high school institutions consider below a 70 still passing.

Oh god I'm an idiot.
The common theme I'm seeing from these reviews is "story takes a backseat to gameplay this time around."
As such, even though I'm expecting this game to be a great game, I'm expecting it'll be polarizing to some of the more diehard fans (and even some "poser" fans). MGS for the longest time has always had more of an emphasis on its story, with the gameplay ranging from serviceable (MGS 1 and 2) to good (MGS 3+).
Kojima's charm seems to still be intact though, so while story may be more in the background, it should still feel like an MGS game.
Now, I'm just patiently awaiting the Polygon review, which rates it 7/10 and complains about how sexualized Quiet is as well as some other sensationalized social justice topics.

I think it's just going to be waaaay less cinematics in the main game and you are probably going to have most of the conversations done over the idroid.

Even private ones do. My school has below 60 as the failing mark, which is nice because it means I still get credits from the sociology class I despised.
I hope the reviews are high because it does more than improve upon game-play. A lot of people have rated the MGS series lowly because of its controls and gameplay, but the story is what a lot of MGS fans play for.
Here's hoping we get the improved combat and the notorious storytelling.

A lot of the reviews say the story isn't like the previous games.
If you go into it expecting that you're just leading yourself to disappointment.

Since when did review scores hold any credibility though lol

ye true, you should reserve judgement until you've tried it yourself or someone you know comes out and gives a verdict
but you gotta admit that a lotta tens is pretty promising though
GTA5 on consoles had purely 10s as well, and that didn't hold my interest for too long.
Fuck it, I'm just going to wait for Angry Joe to give me an actual fucking number.

i dont want to wait for the review from a guy who says he never played MGS except for GZ and MGS4

Then find someone else who you trust to review it, I'm just going to wait for him.
Besides, I doubt I'm ever going to play it anyways. I feel like it's too far into the series for me to try to get a sense of it and I don't even really have a playstation to play the current or older ones anyways.

MGS HD collection is on 360
only thing youll miss out on is MGS4 and MGS1 unless you find a way to play it without a PS.
if not:
Metal Gear Solid 3: The Movie

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker: The Movie

Now play MGSGZ and MGSV in that order

Just watch a story walkthrough. You're really missing out if you like stealth based games.
Sure, the story is a little cheesy at some points but the gameplay is what makes MGS so great.
I'm a little biased when it comes to MGS tho, because I've played it since the first one and I'm a little bit nostalgic about it. It's one of those series that you either like or hate but at least give it a chance.
Numbers are arbitrary and don't mean anything, these days.
Undoubtedly this is an amazing game but numbers mean little and, more importantly, I have no respect for the vast majority of these sites. I'll wait for people I do respect like TB and SBH to talk about it.
Having said that I'm absolutely buying this game holy shit hype!
