So did they volunteer to do this or are they basically slaves?
You say that jokingly but it isn't far from the point I'm making. If they can get systems like this made by people who are computer savy who they have jailed, I don't see that as something they will notice and think "Hmm, this is a good reason to reduce the amount of time someone who gains access to a computer should be jailed for".
Are you being serious? This isn't the fucking undercover heist from payday, people aren't going to be imprisoned and then be forced to code, otherwise everything they write would have to be double checked with a fine tooth comb to make sure there's nothing malicious there, it's not in any way feasible.

The inmates were computer savvy according to the article, so they probably got bored.
When I was in Scotland Maximum Security Penitentiary, If the person at the food counter didn't give me enough, I wouldn't move forward in the line, I would just stand there and cough politely until they gave me more.
Several other inmates starved to death, but thats not the point.
If your being charged for your meal, why do they care if your getting seconds?
Because they get double the money out of kids who are using their parents money to pay for lunch.
edit: Rate this post dumb if you believe malware doesn't exist, and criminals don't try to escape.
Except disagreeing to your assumption that they have bad intentions ≠ "Malware doesn't exist and criminals don't try to escape"
Because you could see it as free labor, on top of saving the state money. I don't see how you don't see how the state would consider this beneficial?
are you really this disjointed from reality
we aren't running a fucking slave system you dunce
Or how about they pay the inmates what they actually deserve for coding this? Unless the inmates volunteered for this deal, it seems kind of bullshit that the state doesn't feel obligated to pay these guys justly.
Even if they pay them, I doubt it would be the full costs of a proper software developer, so they'd save money anyway.

There might not be enough, lunch at my school is split into three for different classes, and it sucks to be in the third because sometimes certain items are all gone
Fucking second lunch ate all the steak last week, to hell with them.
