Some people view the preparation of the ritual as part of the relaxation process. It can be very relaxing to set everything up and then perform the ritual.

I'm sure you can. This is just how a minority of people choose to do it (and many do it simply for tradition's sake or the sense of community, like with many other faith traditions).
I get where he's coming from but speaking as a wiccan myself this dude sounds fucking batshit. Even if auras are a real thing, there's no way a human would be able to see them.

It's really impossible to give any kind of concrete answer about anything involving pagan religion because pagan is such a vague and diverse term that you're going to get a million answers. There are Norse pagans, Helenistic pagans, Egyptian pagans, Wiccans, Druids, so on and so forth. And a good number of these groups are trying to reconstruct their religions with little or no documentation from their original practitioners, so each group has a wide range of practices and beliefs that vary from person to person.
Basically, some pagans believe that rituals are for meditation, and some believe that they're for practical 'magic,' for lack of a better word. Some pagans believe that rituals are necessary for this outcome, some do not. It depends almost entirely on the pagan.
