Despite the economic might of India (though GDP per capita, PPP and nominal are meager at best), I wouldn't class the country as anything other than developing, and third world. It's certainly not the bottom of the barrel, but it is in the barrel. Of course there are rich areas, but they are dwarfed by the less fortunate. India has a HDI rank of ~130 which supports my assertion.
