The US is censoring the internet by removing the domain names from the internet.
Exactly, they hold the TLD (Top Level Domain, like .com, net, edu, co.** etc) and the actual domain.
However, DNS is only there to "simplify" going to websites, by using words. Its there to help us getting to sites. Better to type www.facepunch.com than 174.129.7.255:80.
If we use an alternate DNS (OpenDNS for example) can this be circumvented or is it at a higher level than that?

From what I can figure they have forced ICANN or who ever to change the nameservers for the domain to point to "seizedservers.com" so there's no way around it.

OpenDNS is a DNS, just free for the most part. Hense the name really.

It'll also be like these popular services:
no-ip, dyndns, etc. However, since they are free you can largely exploit these services. But why bother, when COICA comes into place, linux distributors will find an alternative method.
We can always get the precursors to the internet back and use that instead.
Why do you seem to think that politicians would want to censor political dissent anyway? How does that help them, or America?
It helps them because it suppresses negative press about them, and since when did politicians actually care about the country they're running for power in? Any politician who makes it "big" has done so by caring about themselves and their wallet, not their constituents.
Oh yeah, because the government is all an evil overlord power that wants to kill you and your whole family and watch you with cameras.
Well they can wiretap your house without a warrant, put a GPS on your car without a warrant, shut down your website without a warrant, declare you a terrorist and send you to cuba to be tortured without a warrant, and molest you at the airport.
Yeah, evil overlord power sounds about right.

United States of North Korea
God damn it Zeke. Why does everything you say have to be so true?
It will only work for things that the US can manipulate. Domains registered and maintained outside of the US remain safe.

That's been established already.
God damn it Zeke. Why does everything you say have to be so true?
I take what conservatives are thinking and type the exact opposite.
That's been established already.
I know, however not everyone gets the message. I said it in order to remind people. As you know, some people don't pay any attention and say stupid shit, and believe stupid shit.
I'm just here to correct that.

All .com and .org domains are done through ICANN. US could take down Wikileaks or The Pirate Bay if they didn't mind the diplomatic shitstorm.
Both sites would just register domains from another country outside of ICANN's control and the issue would become irrelevant. This plan will fail and simply result in a significant number of people abandoning domains managed by ICANN as they will be considered to be unreliable and vulnerable to siezure at a moment's notice.

Brilliant.

I'm sure Japan will love to kick out their effective military

Return of Usenet, whee
and there we go, the government has an even harder job now
And we just sit back, and watch. Nobody does anything about it; no protests, no formal complaints, no massive amounts of lawsuits, nothing. It's so damn frustrating.

I'm thinking hateful thoughts at them.
http://wikileaks.info/
.info is managed by ICANN if I remember correctly, but most of the ones linked to from there aren't so Wikileaks is safe as long as the servers stay safe IMO.
Didn't a senator delay COICA?
This has happened before. Sometime last year a site was seized like this.
The government is taking away our rights because they are only listening to the big businesses that profit our shit economy.
Well, it looks like we might be living in a dystopia soon.
Good ol' TPB will always be around to keep us company.
Probably. :smith:
I don't dig finks like this baby, what these people are doin is only what a fink would do.
Well fuck.
The government just seems to get worse every day.
Now we just have to wait for someone like Palin to be elected president and we'll start getting bible passages quoted all over these websites.
Something goes wrong,
I'm calm..always. why?
Because I BLAME OBAMA.
