My father works at a water treatment plant, and I used to know most of what went on, but it's been years. Generally, big things are removed from the water, then they coagulate a lot of other substances to the point where they fall out of the water, then they do it again with smaller particles and added chemicals to speed it along, then they pass it through fine filters before it heads out. At various points along this treatment numerous other chemicals are added to balance pH, eliminate organisms, and provide for general health.
