[Oil Leak]Giant dome thing didn't work? HERP DERP, LETS THROW GARBAGE AT IT
I'm no petroleum engineer, But the best thing to do at this point from what I know, would be to blow it up with conventional explosives. If you can get enough bang down there the well should collapse on itself and stop.
i think the entire oil cavity will blow the fuck up.
However, experts have warned that any further damage to the blowout preventer - a huge valve system meant to turn the oil off - could see it shooting out at 12 times the current rate.

Why not just put a new oil rig over it and start collecting the oil leaking out?
Takes too long time.
Baby ducks seem to be pretty good at soaking up oil- why not just jam a few thousand ducklings into it?

"They'll take a bunch of debris -- shredded up tires, golf balls and things like that -- and under very high pressure, shoot it into the preventer itself and see if they can clog it up and stop the leak."

Who the fuck thought BP should try this?
How could they even think of this at all?!
This is a fantastic point.
What the fuck was the guy who thought of this doing when he had the flash of inspiration to use fucking garbage, to block a fucking oil well.
To block an oil well, with garbage.
I'm sorry I can't quite get over this.
With garbage...
All the gear no idea.
Let's just put a siv over the hole to fliter out the oil.
Hmm, so not only will there be a massive oily patch all over the ocean but lots of shredded up tires and golf balls floating around also.
Good stuff, let's fight fire with fire.
Honestly why don't we just set it on fire.
And not tell anyone about the clear and obvious explosive issues with that.
It's funny cause it'll work.

I'm willing to bet a group of engineers working on a crisis situation have more grasp on what they're doing than you. But yeah, the concept does sound silly, but I'm guessing they have their reasons.
This is why nuclear devices are much better.
Like Chernobyl. And kids born with cancer when living near nuclear plants.

except it'd be an underwater Chernobyl
OH GOD FISH CANCER
fish s.t.a.l.k.e.r.
crash the sun into it.
i think the entire oil cavity will blow the fuck up.
When above ground oil wells blow out and make the awesome geyser of fire as you see in the first gulf war, the only way to stop it was to toss some TNT down the hole and blow it up. The explosion would suffocate the fire by using up all the oxygen. Now in this situation, the geyser is not on fire. However, If you can reel some explosives down into the hole, it would cause the soft sand around the well to collapse in on itself, thus covering the hole. I doubt it would blow the whole cavity.

Not to mention the HUGE amount of shrimping that goes on in the Gulf. If you like shrimp, you wouldn't be able to have it for a good 30 years. Also, the underwater shock wave that would be produced would kill a shit load of sea life, and be an ecological disaster all on its own.
Not to forget about the sperm whale populations that will be migrating to the gulf soon, and we are all well aware of the risks of radioactive whales:

yeah except that nuclear plant was defective and the dumbass who ran it was a moron.

actually they were testing its safety systems
I jut got the image in my head of the characters from Axis Powers Hetalia discussing this problem with a slit-eyed shifty-looking Chinese representative of BP.
What's sad is that that's exactly hoiw the conversation would go between them.
I was thinking it was more along the lines of Hank Hill and Kahn Souphanousinphone
Maybe if BP put the industry standard cut off valve that all oil drilling companys use there would not be a problem in the first place
Can we please listen to the Russians now?
How about cutting off the oil supply?
How about cutting off the oil supply?
They tried that and it's broken
I'd like to see your faces if/when this works.
Ok let's think about this.
The pressure at the ocean floor is enough to make a submarine implode.
Yet oil continues to pump out of this chamber at a fantastic rate.
Do you really think that some trash is going to be able to withstand the pressure?
Can we please listen to the Russians now?
A nuclear bomb might rupture one of the countless oil pipelines covering the floor from one of the other 3000 offshore rigs in the gulf. It should be the LAST thing they do.
A tactical nuke with a small yield should be ok.
Or they could manufacture a tiny one.
Or they could use conventional explosives and not radiate the gulf and the tons of shrimp people eat annually.
How did they NOT think of this sooner?
Because its shit.
