OvB is crying out there somewhere
things like this make me wonder if i have ever eaten, destroyed, or thrown away something incredibly rare and valuable without even knowing it.
snip unfunny joke taken too far blah blah blah sorry for shitposting
Nonono, that was really great, I had a laugh at this one.
And he didn't notice anything strange about an octopus with six legs?
I mean it's in the name, couldn't be that hard
I have to agree with this. If I fished out an octopus with only 6 arms, I would think something is a little strange with it.

You're on facepunch, you've thrown away your rare and valuable time.
First hexapus ever eaten then, probably.

Octopus with only two tentacles:
Dipus or bipus?

I used to shoot birds with my pellet gun and my cat would retrieve them. It was a lot of fun but I was so young then that it never occurred to me to even consider what kind of birds they were. For all I know I could have killed the very last Purple Picklepecker in existence.
what a fucking moron. As a marine bio major, it's extremely irritating to know that this guy just fucking pulled it out of the ocean and killed it like a barbarian. He's a mechanical engineer, you'd think that he'd realize as he was looking at it that it had six tentacles instead of eight and would establish that it was different. Ought to have brought it to a science center or just have let the thing go and let it live in peace.

Mechanical Engineers don't work with sea creatures.

but they do pay attention to detail
Can't really blame them. I had no idea there was such a thing as a hexapus, let alone that they were an incredibly rare subspecies. What do I look like, an ocean biologist? I'd have just assumed it was mutated, or injured, or even more likely, that I most certainly didn't want to smash and eat any squishy sea blob, regardless of how many legs it had or didn't have.
If it's anything like Squid, it's probably delicious.

This JUST in, folks!
People who have access to different information respond differently to given circumstances.
but they do pay attention to detail
when they're doing mechanical engineering, sure
when they're out fishing for sea creatures to eat, not so much. there's no prior cases of this happening so I can't imagine he's ever heard "if you find an octopus make sure to count the legs, if it has less than eight then it's rare!!!"

as a psychology major i declare you incapable of any form of logical and simple thought, congratulations
That's the best way to sum up America on one sentence.
"We have found a rare thing, let's devour it!".

I'm certain the first thought in their head when they saw the octopus was "That's rare!"
or else they wouldn't have fucking eaten it most likely

Except that they also do that in greece.

octopi is fucking delicious why wouldn't you eat it
I can't say I'm surprised it's rare if that's what locals do to them.
Wait how does that carry any bearing on the rarity of the species? It's just a method of killing the animal - it's how a lot of people deal with fish they've caught too.
That's like saying 'Oh they shot that deer with a rifle? No wonder they're rare if that's what the locals do to them!'
Jeez, I mean it's disappointing that it happened but come on, it doesn't even sound that rare unless you're well informed on sea creatures and shit. "An octopus with six tentacles" doesn't really strike me as something that peculiar honestly. I'd just think it was some cool local critter that we don't have where I'm from.
Well did they know it was a rare? Come on guys, he caught it, it's his right to cook him.
if it turns out to be endangered it's actually not his right to cook it

Yes because everyone is a Marine Biology major and knows that it's not simply an odd octopus.
Why are we so fucking quick to kill everything special in the animal kingdom
Like when we find the biggest of some species in the world and then immediately kill it because reasons
they fucking ate the thing! it's not like they killed it then dumped it back in the fucking sea!
Why is our first reaction to bash something and then cut up its body and devour it?
Well they made a mistake and had some delicious octopus. I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing if I din't know it was so rare.
Why is our first reaction to bash something and then cut up its body and devour it?
Because that's the local tradition there.
They didn't know it was a goddamn hexapus
