There are plenty of gay Australian priests who have to hide their orientation due to fear of being fired simply because of their sexual orientation. I know because I had a fling with one in 1983. I went on a six month work trip to Canberra and on a brief drop at the local pub I met a wonderful gentleman who's name was Tony. After a bit of conversation he told me he was a priest at a local parish and we spoke briefly about religion. It wasn't long though before I asked him what a man such as himself was doing at an installation such as that. Well Tony cut right to the chase and said that he was a fellow sodomite and he was looking for love. The conversation got a bit heated and one thing went to another and well, we ended up in bed and in a variety of positions that would probably have made an old sailor blush. After we were done putting my Sodom in his Gomorrah, we had a discussion about discrimination of gays and sexual minorities in general over a pair of filterless cigarettes. Australia, especially the Australian church(es) at the time were extremely homophobic and a part of me is inclined to believe they still are. It's a shame that such a beautiful country allows its flock to discriminate against people simply because of what they get up to in the bedroom, but at the same time I guess it's the right of private institutions to decide who works for them.
this reads like a super-gay neo-noir story
Teachers and doctors and all others who work in religious institutions (religious schools and private medical centres) should be subject to an evaluation of their ability to work within the guidelines of the employer. If they can administer education or medical care that follows the religious beliefs of the institution then it shouldn't matter whether or not they have Christian, Muslim, Jewish or Pastafarian belief in their ~soul~.

Example: if a hospital refuses to perform a necessary abortion or a school refuses to teach proper biology they should stop being allowed to be a hospital/school

If they don't offer abortions (and consequently kill a patient) or they end up with terrible Biology VCE results then they're going to lose reputation.
Hopefully the new prime minister will allow it. (For those who don't know, we didn't vote for Gillard, and she would have never gotten in unless she back stabbed Kevin Dudd.)
Well considering we only have a choice between dumb and dumber I'd still vote for Gillard, Abbot has no idea what he's doing and he's even worse.
If people think America has some crazy cultists, your mind will be blown by how many extremist christians there are in Australia. The evangelical happy clapper network is growning big time in Australia and they have a very aggressive recruitment scheme (or brain washing I'd like to call it), they start them young with "youth groups" that do all the "fun things" and when they are adults they are nice cash injections for their organisation and also mindless drones who do some pretty nasty shit like oppressing the gays. Box me all you want but if you look hard enough you'll see that there are some pretty nasty christian nutcases in Parliment, that guy that held the R18+ back for video games in Australia for the past 10 years is one of them, Atkison that is. Fuck if you think this as bad as them but they all need to disappear, the amount of people who've died or been oppressed in the name of the Christian all loving and caring "God". Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkk Yoooooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Personally I don't see an issue with this. This law just means you know straight up who the cunts are and not to associate yourself with them. If I were gay I'd rather walk into a Church and be told, "we don't want you here, you're a fag!" so that I could respond, "well then I don't want to be here because you're an immense cunt!" instead of being accepted through gritted teeth and not learning until like a year later that I was despised by everyone around me and was only being accepted due to some law. This way I figure that hopefully the shitty churches and small, local religious groups that are made up of bigoted, discriminatory wankers will slowly dwindle in numbers as our species becomes more tolerant and open of others and, one can hope, these openly hateful places eventually fade away into nothingness as they're shunned by the general population.

For an atheist, Julia Gillard sure is being religious. I'm guessing she doesn't want to be Prime Minister any more.
