• Is Facebook a passing fad? Nearly half of Americans think so

When you see grandmothers using Facebook, it's obvious - if Facebook is going to die out, it certainly won't be soon. Facebook is successful because it's the first social networking site to hit the mainstream. It's incredibly versatile and very, very popular with a youth demographic, who may continue using it later into life. It's not ready to keel over just yet.
Oh boy here we go. Incomming "that's not how surveys work" posts [editline]15th May 2012[/editline] Seems I posted a minute too late, already one
He has a point. Taking such a small sample size and then claiming it is the opinion of America? That is like going to a single school, taking a survey on how students feel about dress code and then saying half of all American students think dress code should be mandatory. [editline]15th May 2012[/editline]
twitter is useful for information, I'd say it's a social news aggregate site, you go there for content, alerts, and what is happening around the world facebook is logging in to be confronted by drunk photos, annoying or quasi-spam updates, and then finally your actual close friends
There are ways to filter out this garbage and just keep the people you want updates from on your wall, a lot of people just don't use it. What I can't wait for is for social media that can simply filter posts that it knows you want to see, so you don't have to go through and set up all that bullcrap.
Whenever an amazingly better social networking website comes out and becomes popular, then Facebook will just die like MySpace did.
for being the number 1 visited site in the world, it sure is sloppy and poorly made It's also one of the worst social networks out there, well at least several other social networks are much better designed, simpler, elegant, innovative, etc.
Aside from Google+ could you please provide other sites that are better? I am genuinely interested.
Aside from Google+ could you please provide other sites that are better? I am genuinely interested.
some of these my main point is fb feels so cheap for the world's most visited site, and whose role is to display simple text status updates with optional image or video attachments :pwn: The whole site feels like it was designed by the guy who designed the aesthetic components of Windows 2000 or XP or some eye soaring shit
there are allot more social networks than just G+ and FB [editline]15th May 2012[/editline] relevance?
Because he said Facebook was like windows. I guess Google+ would be Linux and OSX would be akin to Myspace, hipster bullshit. Because Facebook's kinda the best that we've got.
It's not dying out anytime soon. They're constantly upgrading and have tons of employees, so I find it hard to believe that any group of people is going to make a "better than Facebook, Facebook."
I really don't get the hate on Facebook. I use it to keep in touch with my family and friends who live 2500 miles away. Sure there are idiots, but it's nice to see how my mother and siblings are.
I use Facebook and don't see me leaving anytime soon. It's not Facebook's fault, it's just all the idiots who use it.
there are allot more social networks than just G+ and FB
yeah but they're all either dead like bebo xanga etc. or for really niche groups like vampirefreaks furaffinity etc.

I don't see Facebook becoming as irrelevant as MySpace is now for at least 10 years.
1000 People = "Nearly half of Americans" I'll take this with more than a grain of salt when the survey base is a tad larger.
Man, I bet you hate family feud.
how are you guys this dense? Facebook=/=social networks can people please stop missing the point completely?
Facebook is a social network, what else would it? A fucking blog because if I hear blogs I normally think of tumblr and blogger
What does Facebook not have that would make it instantly 9000 times better? Customization? More privacy control?
I'm surprised Testecull hasn't showed up yet showing off the fact that he doesn't have Facebook.
Twitter is now in the spotlight.
I think Facebook will begin to lose a presence but will never really die. Myspace is still alive, for example. I stopped bothering with my Facebook when I realized the people I knew were (mostly) stupid and annoying. Requests to games and those "like this if xxxx" status updates get annoying. While I may not use my Facebook much anymore, that's not to say other people don't find a use in it. Eventually, you get to the point of where you have too many friends that you're incapable of seeing on a regular basis/talking with and social networking helps to sort of prevent that split. Facebook does a perfectly fine job of what it's setup for.
I have seen so many horrid pictures of idiots on Facebook and yet when I go onto my own account, I see nothing. I see friends chatting, posting about things coming up in their lives, invites to an outing or two. I haven't even ever seen one of those "Want a billion friends, like this comment" things. Am I unique in having actual, real friends who use Facebook as an actual tool to reach other friends, or is everyone just bitching at the minority crap that comes with all sites?
Man, I bet you hate family feud.
Survey says: "I don't watch it enough to care!"
I starting liking pages that had to do with my interests and now it has become a sort of aggregator of information rather than a site to connect with people you know.. If you use it in that respect then it becomes really useful.
Facebook is a social network, what else would it? A fucking blog because if I hear blogs I normally think of tumblr and blogger
no, I am criticizing people who "don't get" the fb hate, they perceive attacks on fb as attacks on social networks. Disliking facebook is not dislike social networks, it's dislike the specific brand facebook like if someone disliked Toyota's, they aren't anti-car. [editline]15th May 2012[/editline]
What does Facebook not have that would make it instantly 9000 times better? Customization? More privacy control?
for one, less clutter, less fuglier gui
I like Facebook, and use it often [editline]15th May 2012[/editline] Plus, summer is coming up (BIKINI PICS TO FAP TO)
YOLO POSTS TO MURDER TO.
I think facebook is far to embedded into society to just disappear.
Its hard to find an actual good use for facebook when most of the people I need to communicate posts stupid "philosophical" quotes and shit that they found off other people's facebook pages.I'm sure a lot of people in facepunch have this problem but I'm sure a lot doesn't.Its just bugging me because even some of the adults I have in friends have at least part of the stereotypical facebook attitude.I can ignore those things and for the most part they're just annoyances but seeing it everyday when you're looking for updates on work, projects and school stuff is really really starting to get tiring.I don't even need to mention the bloody app requests
I think the simplicity of Twitter is what might make Facebook a thing of the past soon. Ever since the timeline came out they seem to have fallen much more into the 'blog about your life' area. I prefer Twitter because the updates are more frequent and theres less bullshit to search through. Plus, you can unfollow people without it seeming so harsh like 'this person has removed you as a friend' and get real-time updates with news etc.
A sample of 1,000 people. :I
1 Billion users is NOT a passing fad, it's here to stay whether we like it or not
As the older generation gets tired of Facebook, the younger generation finds new fads. I'm guessing it might take as long as 10 more years for Facebook to fade out, but it will. [editline]16th May 2012[/editline] It's at least going to peak within the next five years. When it starts going down, Zuckerberg's gonna sell and it'll have a very slow demise.
