• Is Facebook a passing fad? Nearly half of Americans think so

I've already removed my Facebook account, Google+ does exactly what I need with a really tidy interface and a usable mobile app. And I trust Google a whole lot more than Facebook.
I really doubt it, I and my friends use it everyday it's pretty much a tool to us to keep up to date and I doubt it'll be going anywhere for a while seeing as 1 billion people use it. Most of you on here are like "I WISH IT DIED SOON", I must ask, do you guys have any friends that use it or do you have friends at all?
This is why I like it. I can keep contact with people from my old class. With a phone it'd be much harder, and what if people lose their phone? Seen it happen several times, then they ask for the numbers on Facebook.
twitter is useful for information, I'd say it's a social news aggregate site, you go there for content, alerts, and what is happening around the world facebook is logging in to be confronted by drunk photos, annoying or quasi-spam updates, and then finally your actual close friends
This. Twitter is very useful for quick updates on certain things. Facebook depends on who you are friends with, and what pages you like. You can remove all the dumb shit if you want to, by adding the right people and unsubbing to people who post meme posts etc. [editline]16th May 2012[/editline]
Plus, you can unfollow people without it seeming so harsh like 'this person has removed you as a friend' and get real-time updates with news etc.
Unsubscribe option on Facebook. You won't see their updates or anything at all, but you'll still keep them as friends. News? Like certain pages, or users who share news etc.
Unsubscribe option on Facebook. You won't see their updates or anything at all, but you'll still keep them as friends.
Just a handy tip, if you don't know about the unsubscribe feature just do this
I don't think it will. It is much more far spread than MySpace I think. Nearly every site has a share on Facebook option and I just don't see it dying
I've already removed my Facebook account, Google+ does exactly what I need with a really tidy interface and a usable mobile app. And I trust Google a whole lot more than Facebook.
I love Google+ its way easier to organize since they put a priority in circles feature.Though I don't use it because well....No one is using it
If something appeared in the future that was getting more attention than Facebook I'm sure they would just buy it out anyway. The only thing that would kill Facebook is greedy shareholders or some bad business deal.
Yeah Google+ seems nice but it wasn't good enough to pull people away from Facebook, kind of like how Facebook's clean layout is basically what absorbed all of MySpace's cluttery bullshit. Oh MySpace. I wonder what they're up to these days. I hear it's become more of a Youtube+music website now.
Whats the point in asking 1000 random Americans about Facebook shares? The vast majority of them won't own shares or now what a good investment is. You're basically just asking for their opinion on Facebook and hiding it behind the guise of being useful data.
I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. And besides, I love certain aspects of having a Facebook. Like I have a group message with only my closest friends and we can keep in touch and update each other on just about anything very easily. Nothing else right now (that anyone uses regularly) really allows me to do certain things like that.
twitter is useful for information, I'd say it's a social news aggregate site, you go there for content, alerts, and what is happening around the world facebook is logging in to be confronted by drunk photos, annoying or quasi-spam updates, and then finally your actual close friends
while this is true if you're following real media sites/journalists/politicians etc etc, i'd say that half the people i have on facebook also have a twitter account and they post even more mundane shit on there than they do on facebook. at least on facebook there seems to be some fear of being ignored or being publicly humiliated on the newsfeed but the crap people i know post on twitter is just retarded - moment to moment updates on stuff like what people are having for tea or "oh no the bus is busy fml yolo busbanter2k12"
I hope it does, I cringe every time I hear about the petty drama by sister drags family members into on Facebook, and I find it easier to respect them when I don't know their opinion about Obama and socialism. Anyone who said it was the anonymity of the internet that makes people say stupid things was dead wrong.
I hope it is. I can't stand what it does to my extended family and long for the day when it dies and they're forced to actually use their vocal cords to communicate when they're sitting six feet from each other at the kitchen table...
The only thing I dislike about FB is the timeline. Luckily I'm still on the previous layout though.
Hah good news for them seeing as their IPO's launching.
The only thing I dislike about FB is the timeline. Luckily I'm still on the previous layout though.
why do people dislike timeline? is it just because people dont like change? it's one of the few facebook updates that actually does something worthwhile, in this case giving you a far more aesthetically pleasing layout and more customizability
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ifmhoabcaeehkljcfclfiieohkohdgbb With Social Fixer, anything's possible! All of the stupid "LMS", "Share if", "Like if," etc. posts are automatically sorted into a new category for me.
Because you added on Facebook people that upload drunk photos and post shitty statuses, and didn't use the site's functionality to see more of what you want to see.
I don't mind Facebook, but a lot of the drunken photos and annoying updates are the people from school, who I never had interaction with and have no desire to interact with them now, spamming friend request at me to the point where it's easier to just accept it. On a family basis though, Facebook really is a fantastic tool. My mum's two sisters live on opposite sides of the world from her, yet they can chat at a moments notice or share pictures of my cousins and what they're up to and such. And for my Gran it's even better, because even though she's pushing 90 and is finding it harder to travel long distances over seas, she can also speak to her two daughters with a ton of ease.
I can't see it die out any time soon, I just don't see anyone else expanding on the idea and being as successful with it. That said, the one thing that is shitting me off with it at the moment is the Subscriptions, I'm sick of seeing "Like if you believe in God, ignore and you're going to hell", or "Want 2000 friend requests? Like this post, then unlike it, and check your friend requests!" I don't need that shit taking up space on the news feed.
Hopefully people will face the fact that its composed of pure bullshit, including people talking about shoes and clothes, duckfaces, how they would like to take it in the ass from the guy in the photo above (I shit you not) and talking about other kinds of shit nobody with a brain would care. Only thing nice about it is how you can look up your friends and talk to them, else, cesspool.
twitter is useful for information, I'd say it's a social news aggregate site, you go there for content, alerts, and what is happening around the world facebook is logging in to be confronted by drunk photos, annoying or quasi-spam updates, and then finally your actual close friends
The Baconator, presenting clear and objective comparative analyses of social networks.

(Or at least something similar to it)

OR Accept that there are real tangible benefits in the existence of these things that make them worthwhile ventures. [editline]17th May 2012[/editline] Facebook is useful as fuck. My band has reached hundreds and hundreds of people now. If our (paying) audience was restricted to people who go to our local gigs, it would be something like 100, maybe 200. Because we post statuses and get shared by people, it has reached to something silly like 600 people. I mean, to do a cost/benefit analysis, we paid $0 for this advertising and are getting potential returns in the hundreds. Facebook isn't this shallow, useless mire of drunk teenagers - it's useful in so many ways.
I think if Facebook were to become a bit more simplistic/minimalistic it would become as inviting as it was before when it wasn't as popular. Keep the security, tone down on how much blares in your face when you visit the front page. But that's just me.
Yes, it's a fad, albeit a very long one, then again, isn't everything a fad?
Yeah Google+ seems nice but it wasn't good enough to pull people away from Facebook, kind of like how Facebook's clean layout is basically what absorbed all of MySpace's cluttery bullshit. However, I haven't really seen that any more. Now these small-time, amateur metal bands use Facebook for streaming their music. For the past few years, amateur bands have been the only thing keep MySpace alive (in my opinion). Now they're starting to even lose those to Facebook. :v:

The rest is things that are actually nice and useful. I didn't say that it should end. I said the average user is a complete moron who thinks he/she is deep and the best.
Look at it this way: when not even Google can dethrone you, nothing will.
I think it's pretty obvious that it'll die out and be quicky replaced by Google Wave.
I love Google+ its way easier to organize since they put a priority in circles feature.Though I don't use it because well....No one is using it
Agreed, its an excellent service and everything that Facebook should be, non eye melting interface and its just so well laid out, everything is logical. The apps and games are kept well separate of the timeline how they should be. As soon as Facebook sinks for good, I can see G+ being the replacement (if Google don't cancel it)
The problem is...MySpace was just a popular website that only teenagers and pedophiles went on. Facebook...EVERYONE is on Facebook. Not just kids, but parents and elderly people too. Facebook will die out at some point, there's no asking about it. It's just going to be a very long, slow process.
