Enough about starlight, more on the actual subject.
Is steam safe?
Store is back up so I would assume so.
The difference is there are actual big digital game retailers other than Steam that you can buy games from. You cannot compare Walmart to Steam.
In terms of PC games, the only online store that has this is Origin. There isn't a single game on GOG that isn't on Steam.
Also of note the problem probably happened because Christmas and whatnot, Valve probably wanted to beef up the caching.
So a serious competitor must threaten the existence of a company?
Pretty much, yes. If not, then there is no competition.

Which just goes to show that they compete against Steam.

Again, I think there is a misunderstanding for the actual game monopoly.
I guess Valve is that one asshole who fills the entire first side with hotels.
Even if Steam was a monopoly, what could be done about it?
You can't forcefully downgrade them because that in itself is anti-competitive since you'd be forcing a worse service so that other worse services could get a chance without actually improving or competing.
There's nothing that can be done short of another service stepping it's shit up, and you can't force that.
This would make a nice Mass Debate topic.
Surprised how civil everyone is being, a nice change from the usual back and forth "IS NOT IS TOO" banter.
But on topic: It really looks like the issue is resolved.

"It looks like the caching issue was resolved. We'll tweet updates if we have any. Stay safe!"
Looks like it's safe, but just be on your toes.

Valve is based in the US, so they'd be split up.
They don't stop other services from starting up either so another competitor wouldn't be that hard

im glad a third party stepped in as valve's pr instead of valve actually hiring people for that purpose.
Anyone can confirm if people are able to log in through your browser? So far it just sends me back to the store page while not logged in.
Pretty much, yes. If not, then there is no competition.
That's not how things work. You literally don't know what you are talking about. I'm going to highlight this post of yours in case people doubt it in the future.

How would splitting them up work exactly.
Like what does splitting them up mean?

To reference before,
the same logic can be applied to something like google. There is a difference between a monopoly and being the most popular used service.

Same here, not able to log in on browser and cannot log in on steam mobile app as well.

cutting all the employees in half and then making each new half work for a new company
To reference before,

Exactly. This would only happen if they had massive majority control over a market( see: like over 90-95% ) and inhibited others from starting up.
cutting all the employees in half and then making each new half work for a new company
I feel bad for the company getting the lower halves then
I feel bad for the company getting the lower halves then
top to down not sideways
I feel bad for the company getting the lower halves then
Valve have already done this in the form of working with Turtle Rock on CSS and Left 4 Dead.
How would splitting them up work exactly.

There would be a court order to split them up into multiple sister companies. Look up the AT&T splitup for more infos.
Walmart doesn't have a monopoly on this town; there's like two mom and pop shops to their 15 super centers!
irrelevant. mom and pop stores are another market
They are an effective monopoly, in that in most cases, your only option for PC gaming is steam. I'm not arguing they own literally the entire PC market
That's debatable. Quite a few games have GOG and Humble Bundle copies, then there's the EA and Ubisoft libraries on Origin and Uplay. Not to mention retail games that don't use Steam, though they're rare nowadays.
The only cases you're forced to use Steam are like, new triple-A releases that don't end up on Origin or Uplay.
"A situation in which a single company or group owns all or nearly all of the market for a given type of product or service." From Investopedia.
In the end, is Steam a monopoly? Nope.

you know i'm not trying to excuse valve's fuck up here but it IS christmas day.

Valve PR People are as common as bigfoot even if it is or isnt christmas.
im glad a third party stepped in as valve's pr instead of valve actually hiring people for that purpose.
This irks me more than the actual issue to be honest.
Seriously what is with Valves lack of communication :v:
I feel bad for the company getting the lower halves then
Maybe top down, diagonally; cleanly cut!
I understand Steam is fixed, but I'd advise that one still shouldn't let their guard down until all loose ends has been tied up, like maybe Steam giving an official statement on the matter.
