That's what PR is for, while the engineers run around fixing everything their PR guy gets his company phone out and makes a quick post about it, too bad Valve can't be bothered to hire a few people to do it.
nah nobody at valve can be bothered enough to move their desk into the PR spot obviously.
So has everything been solved? Is it safe for me to log in and purchase games again?
Reading the first 6 pages, I think it's really scummy of the Facepunchers who were actively checking this out and jumping between peoples' accounts. Even though I know most of you aren't gonna fuck with the information, it's still a dick move, and I dunno how it was alright for you to all be talking about how you were doing it like it was okay.
Steam is back up and running without any known issues. As a result of a configuration change earlier today, a caching issue allowed some users to randomly see pages generated for other users for a period of less than an hour. This issue has since been resolved. We believe no unauthorized actions were allowed on accounts beyond the viewing of cached page information and no additional action is required by users.
Why would you EVER push new configuration changes on Christmas? That's just asking for trouble

If such a thing is so blatantly in your face that you can't avoid it, how can you blame the people who are curious enough to click around and tell other people what they can see (Especially when EVERYONE had this happen. All Currently logged in steam users experienced this). In the end, when everything blew over, it's easy to shame people, which is what you are doing right now.
Imagine if someone got into PalmDesert's account Ouch
9+
Why would you EVER push new configuration changes on Christmas? That's just asking for trouble
Lots of people getting money for christmas, they probably wanted Steam to be able to handle the massive influx of new shoppers.
Good thing I wasn't on my computer yesterday.
So, Valve just gonna sweep this under the rug? Classy as always :v:
Why would you EVER push new configuration changes on Christmas? That's just asking for trouble
The influx of new users + the DDoS they were dealing with.
Lots of people getting money for christmas, they probably wanted Steam to be able to handle the massive influx of new shoppers.
Couldn't they anticipate that that would happen though? It's not the first year they've held winter sales, why only make those changes on Christmas itself?
Couldn't they anticipate that that would happen though? It's not the first year they've held winter sales, why only make those changes on Christmas itself?
Because the changes may cost money? If you're scaling up the caching system you use to handle extra load, or switching on some new redundant servers, that costs money. And you preferably only want to do it when it's needed, not before, to minimise cost. Configuration changes are made on the fly all the time. This could have happened to any one of them, valve got unlucky and it hit Christmas. Nothing more.
I got a text yesterday from a number I don't recognize saying "DON'T USE STEAM" I haven't really used it in awhile but seeing this thread I can kinda guess what's going on now.
I got a text yesterday from a number I don't recognize saying "DON'T USE STEAM" I haven't really used it in awhile but seeing this thread I can kinda guess what's going on now.
Turned out that nothing bad did or could happen, at least. Everybody were just panicking as soon as it started.
Why would you EVER push new configuration changes on Christmas? That's just asking for trouble
Probally someone trying to ease the major load happening as a result of Christmas.
Turned out that nothing bad did or could happen, at least. Everybody were just panicking as soon as it started.
Well, no wonder people started to panic. People had no idea whats happening and suddenly see people's personal information. Can you blame them?
They should hire more folk to manage Steam, and themselves get back to making actual games instead of those F2P shit things
Traditional games don't make enough money for valve though :suicide:
I don't mean to be a dick, but there are some people that are too damn snooty to just move on to CSGO because something something casual something skins something.
I don't blame those people, I want shooty shooty bangbang, not "OMG A BOX I HAVE TO BUY A KEY TO UNLOCK" and " I'M GONNA CHANGE THE SKIN OF MY WEAPONS BREH" Changes the focus away from the core gameplay.
i hope if theres anything people learn from this, its that you shouldnt store your credit card info online anywhere because worse stuff could have happened

Were Steam account passwords reset because of this? Because last night my Steam Guard was suddenly off and my password changed, at first I thought I was typing my password wrong but after 15 tries I knew it got changed. Nothing else changed but the Steam Guard and my password, so I'm curious as to if anyone else had their password reset or was my account fucked or something?
Well, no wonder people started to panic. People had no idea whats happening and suddenly see people's personal information. Can you blame them?
Not saying they shouldn't have panicked, dude. I got pretty spooked as well. My Steam account is worth a few thousand dollars. Cannot access the community to add some random I just played Rocket League with.. apparently it is down. Can't access most of Steam again. :unimpressed:
Cannot access the community to add some random I just played Rocket League with.. apparently it is down. Can't access most of Steam again. :unimpressed:
Don't worry store is up, go spend some money.
Well, no wonder people started to panic. People had no idea whats happening and suddenly see people's personal information. Can you blame them?
No but I hate people spreading misinformation, nearly as much as people tweeting "I'll see you in court" at Steam. This reminded me of when something happens in the neighbourhood and everyone is on the street just watching the action, spreading horror stories about what happened even if they don't know shit and pretending they're controlling the situation.
Not saying they shouldn't have panicked, dude. I got pretty spooked as well. My Steam account is worth a few thousand dollars.
Can't even say I was all that spooked by it. I just kept up with the thread for any developments that cropped up. I mean, when it became clear it was just the caching server and nothing more, all concern was gone. But trying to keep track of shit was difficult when you have some users screaming "Ohh fuck we're gonna be poor!" and certain users tying nooses and buying tickets to Seattle to lynch Gabe Newell, and still others going "Hey guys, look my bank totally got charged all this money, never mind I fucked up my numbers and transactions and forgot to add right!" The panicking didn't hell the ones worried, and the idiots just fanned the flames for their own personal reason regardless of any potential consequences.

I mean, when it became clear it was just the caching server and nothing more, all concern was gone.
Honestly, it's quite easy to identify as a caching issue, as long as you have some idea of what that is. So it's good that people were on top of it, telling others what it was despite the huge amount of disinformation going around at the same time. Cache issues are complete shit, but they are still relatively harmless. After all, a user only has access to the pages you've accessed, they don't have your session token and can't do any real damage unless you get unlucky and they get fed your personal details (though if you read warnings beforehand, this shouldn't be a problem). Valve do keep a fair few details censored enough that someone with malicious intent would need to get lucky and see multiple different pages that have your details on to do real damage. No doubt Steam Support is on alert for sudden claims of account loss in light of things like email addresses or addresses possibly being seen. Not that there's enough people on support to actually do anything :v: There's not much to panic about thankfully. And hopefully Valve actually address this properly. This isn't the first, and will not be the last time something like this has happened.
