Does windows 10 run alright, like how would i know what will work with windows 10.
Would i have to completely wipe my pc clean, because i've got a lot of stuff i don't want to loose.
Runs great, just as fast as 8.1 in my experience. So far it's been the most stable version of Windows I've used. Some people are complaining that they see that the driver situation is a mess. And it was, for nvidia users, it kept re downloading a broken update that nvidia pushed. But that was fixed as of yesterday. Pretty much everything that worked on 8.1 and 7 will work on 10. If you upgrade, you'll have 30 days to roll back if you don't like it or find that something doesn't work the way it should.
You can, but the upgrade process is much better than it has been in the past. I've upgraded my machine from 7>8.1>10 and everything works perfectly. You may have to reinstall your antivirus though.
Are they still doing the "forcing you to update and have no control over updates if you have Home edition" thing? If so I don't know if I wanna get Windows 10.
Everything that runs on 8, I am even using 8 drivers for the dual graphic cards of my ultrabook and usually those are ultra shitty and it works really well. Wifi conection is even more stable than on 8.
And no you keep your stuff.
Today is a good time to make a system image of your current OS in case the update fails.
Search for File History, bottom left is system image backup. Run that and save it off the main C drive.
Takes about a hour to do the backup but recovery takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 40 minutes.
How can I tell if it's downloading?

On my "test" machine which is an old laptop, it runs better than 7 or 8. So far didn't notice any incompatibilities either.
Hopefully nothing goes wrong and my files will be fine when I upgrade.
SetupHost.exe will be running.
Or you'll have this folder.

Well if they don't try to make skype an official update I might update to 10. Cause fuck newest skype. It's horrible looking.

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium and don't have that on mine.
I still don't understand why people choose not to upgrade.
It's always just been a straight up upgrade. "Here is everything you like but better"
And it's free for most people as well.
Them forcing updates didn't sit well with a lot of people
I personally don't care and am just waiting to make sure any bugs in the upgrade process either have workarounds or hotfixes.
pretty sure upcoming big updates will be tested by insiders first
Question. In case I'll want to do a reformat later, how will I go about installing the OS if W10 license is digital, first install W7 and then update that to W10?

I get why, bugs, glitches, security vulnerabilities and compatibility problems. It's only after the masses upon masses using it does a lot of stuff that slipped past come up.
But. DirectX 12. Microsoft, the assholes, did the same thing with DX10 and Vista. Only Win10 is shaping up to be quite decent. So that's why I'm upgrading

I'm assuming you are going to be able to put it on a disk/USB drive.
If anybody like me happens to only be able to install Windows 8.1 updates using PowerShell and PSWindowsUpdate, you'll be waiting a long time for that to succeed (do these people exist?). I managed to just upgrade from a Windows 10 ISO, however.
If it's not downloading yet, but you reserved it (maybe it works for everyone?) do this:
Go to window update, choose "change settings" choose "download and install updates automatically".
Now push Windows key + R, type 'cmd' and push enter. In the black window that opens, paste the following:
wuauclt.exe /updatenow
Then hit enter.
Go check windows update and it should show "Downloading Windows 10"
Make sure to launch CMD as administrator.
If it didn't work, try it with the Windows Update window open, and closed, not sure if it needs to be either.

If you play old games or use very specific tool software it is not a straight upgrade, it is the opposite of a straight upgrade.
Windows Update has been updated in preparation.

My CPU isn't supported.
Fuck yourself, Microsoft.

What? How is that even possible?
What? How is that even possible?
Not a fucking clue. My ancient as fuck desktop that runs Win7 can get upgraded but my laptop? lol nope, even though it's newer
So I reserved Windows 10 on my existing computer but I play to build a whole new computer in the next few months. Can I install now and install it on my new computer once I get rid of my old one?

depends, is your current license oem or retail?
depends, is your current license oem or retail?
Retail.
Seems like the pre load is only for people with Pro, that sucks.
Retail.
license transfers are still a fuzzy thing
but it should work
He doesn't have NX, PAE and SSE2

Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 @ 2.00GHz
Honestly the laptop was a gift and Win7 runs just fine, I really don't give a fuck but it would have been nice for them to be a bit more clear in the "omfg get win10!!1" shit when I checked it awhile ago. I've been semi-psyched about upgrading but honestly after this I'm going to hold on to Win7 as long as I possibly can.
Desktop can get upgraded though, I don't mind that.
Just checked the data-sheet. That T7300 has everything Windows 10 needs.
Weird.
It has SSE2 and NX and PAE
It's telling me it's rejected and I don't even see Windows 10 in Windows Update despite having pro. What the fuck, Microsoft.
