Windows 10 starting to be downloaded by GWX for those that reserved their upgrades
Did you download the optional update through Windows update to get the payload in the first place?
It's KB3035583 if you haven't downloaded it.
I didn't before but I just installed it from http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?p=48320874#post48320874 and restarted and its still not there, I guess I haven't had the other update either.
[editline]29th July 2015[/editline]
Everytime I go to download the update it fails saying windows update if currently checking/installing other updates, so I wait for it to finish checking and it just does the same thing again

ok now it works
If you play old games or use very specific tool software it is not a straight upgrade, it is the opposite of a straight upgrade.
That's what DOSBOX is for, and virtual machines. W10 is just as compatible as W7 with exception for some games I believe because, computers.
It's exactly because it is a straight up upgrade that you have compatibility problems with old games, because it's moving on from old code. The more compatible, the more shit on it.
Anybody that is serious about playing old games dual boot XP or 98 or run a virtual machine. Using either of those OS's exclusively just because you want to play old games is a terrible decision that puts your computer at great risk.
I get why, bugs, glitches, security vulnerabilities and compatibility problems. It's only after the masses upon masses using it does a lot of stuff that slipped past come up.
But. DirectX 12. Microsoft, the assholes, did the same thing with DX10 and Vista. Only Win10 is shaping up to be quite decent. So that's why I'm upgrading
Man am I sick at listening to people shit on Vista for no reason.
Vista had 3 months of troubles on launch and then it was as stable as any OS and a straight upgrade from XP, I never looked back. It used more RAM but was flexible with it as well, the more you needed the less it used.
How many bugs glitches and security vulnerabilities has even been going on since W7 beta, W7, W8 beta, W8, W8.1, W10 beta and now W10? I've been jumping on every pre-release and release since Vista's beta and I've never been dissatisfied or run into any major problems, mostly any problem I've run into has been self caused.
The only thing I've heard so far is that W10 has had some issues with the nvidia drivers, big whoop.
If I do a clean install with the ISO, does that get activated under my free upgrade thing?
If I do a clean install with the ISO, does that get activated under my free upgrade thing?
No, you have to do the upgrade first.
Upgrade keeps failing at 91%, this is fucking annoying after downloading the thing 3 times because the first time the ISO version didn't boot and the second time it decided to download two copies at once.
So I have the WindowsBT folder since yesterday (around 4gb in size), but still no prompt to upgrade.
halp
So I have the WindowsBT folder since yesterday (around 4gb in size), but still no prompt to upgrade.

Complete folder is almost 6GB so you need more to download
If it's not downloading yet, but you reserved it (maybe it works for everyone?) do this:
Go to window update, choose "change settings" choose "download and install updates automatically".
Now push Windows key + R, type 'cmd' and push enter. In the black window that opens, paste the following:
wuauclt.exe /updatenow
Then hit enter.
Go check windows update and it should show "Downloading Windows 10"
Make sure to launch CMD as administrator.
If it didn't work, try it with the Windows Update window open, and closed, not sure if it needs to be either.
This worked for me it seems, I had to install an update first though (malicious software removal tookit) and then it started downloading.
No, you have to do the upgrade first.
Can I upgrade with the ISO then reinstall if I'm not getting the option to upgrade through Windows Update?
Too bad I was never given the chance to upgrade, since the stupid "Get Windows 10 app" never showed up on my task bar.
Sort of a niche question but doesnt anyone know if ASIO audio shit will work with 10? It's essential for me doing music stuffs
I'm really not liking this whole "we decide when you're ready to download windows 10" thing. just let me click a button to download it, this is dumb.
According to LifeHacker:
You need to do an in place upgrade (to activate your copy basically), then create the media and then do a fresh install. Once you have activated it (via the upgrade) Microsoft will "know" your computer and automatically licence it when you install Windows 10.

Kinda annoying, why couldn't they authorize current copy and just use that to validate fresh install.
Hey guys my GWX is always crashing when I try to start it up, so I don't know if it's downloading my upgrade in the first place or not. Funny thing is that GWX icon on the tray showed up a few days ago, and has been crashing since. I went to windows update and It said it reserved my upgrade.. I'm not sure how tho, since it's been crashing forever now.
Any help with this?
the Get windows 10 Icon in my tray is gone, I don't know why I haven't done anything, did I need that?
*The graphics drivers are really wonky at the moment, with drivers uninstalling and reinstalling even in the middle of games, from what I'm reading.
I'm fairly certain this is because the system doesn't ship with an many drivers as before but will install many specific ones in the background.
It took about half an hour for my laptop to get the proper screen resolution and also a while until the trackpad was fully supported again in the preview (but now it's all there. I blame Synaptics for only getting the driver ready a week prior to release).
It also seems to recognise network printers and so on automatically now, whereas I had to add it manually on Windows 8 iirc.

This didn't happen for me. I did the upgrade, made the media, but during the install sequence it still asked for a product key. So I got the product key from the first 10 upgrade with speccy, put that in during install, and it went through just fine.
Went home on my lunch, neither computer has even started the download yet.
for people having troubles with the download go here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
get your version, and use the upgrade feature!
edit: yes this does the upgrade through windows and can also be used to make a reinstall disc for use after upgrading!
Check your BIOS. It may have Execute Bit (NX) disabled. Or the other required features of the CPU.
Worst case is the BIOS doesn't support those CPU features. I know in my ASUS G73Sw that I had to get a custom BIOS to enable AES-NI.
I checked the BIOS (which was a strange experience because I'm used to crawling around in 90's and early 2000's BIOS screens) and managed to find the CPU tab which had an option to enable something, I didn't recognize what it said but since it was disabled I figured that had to be it.
It worked! Thanks, buddy :D
Now all I need to do is download the thing on a satellite internet connection that's throttled to dialup speeds during the day. Really sucks, does anyone know if this will affect my ability to get Win10?

Vista was fine in my usage. Never had issues. My younger brother still runs Vista and is a huge gamer.

I'm condesending towards the completely unjustified things people have been racking up against Microsoft over the years that has led to the whole bandwagon of "every other OS is good" which has never been true.
Vista had a reputation problem for longer than 3 months, but all the compatibility issues and instability people were complaining about was over in about 3 months give or take. People just kept believing it was as shitty as ever because that's what it was like at the start and look at all that RAM it is eating, guys can you believe it? The idea that it was a complete mess never stopped and there was no good reason for it, same shit happened (and is happening) with Windows 8 because of the optional Metro interface. Also even though I never experienced ther XP launch at an age where I knew anything useful about computers nor cared, I heard that was an awful piece of shit with problems leaking out of it's ass for years.
Vista was a nobrainer upgrade from XP after it had stabilized, 7 was godlike, 8 was a straight up improvement and 10 continues the tradition. Yet people are sitting with their XP's and 7's and being snarky about outdated or wrongful information about those inbetween.
I am terribly sorry for your Harddrive problems, and surely I don't doubt Vista caused them, but things going to hell isn't something exclusive to Vista and could happen on any OS for a variety of reasons, because that is the nature of PC's. There are regedit fixes for forcefully taking back ownership from folders and disks if that is your problem. Windows 7 was also a complete bitch at times with overriding ownership/privacy settings on thing.
Vista is actually the one OS where I didn't have occasionally annoying problems with, including Windows Update. I'm chalking it up to coincidence, though.
People criticise me because I found 7 buggy as shit and actually like 8

You're too young to remember the switch from Windows 3.x to Windows 95, which was this amazing thing and Win95 was super crazy awesome. Really I compare the OS to OS upgrades based on that because Win95 was revolutionary shit in my opinion, and Windows 98 was just even better. Then came Windows 2000 and Windows ME, I didn't experience 2000 at all but I do remember what a fucking atrocious mess ME was and I downgraded to 98 whenever possible. Of course when XP came out I was getting wary of Microsoft's shit and I absolutely didn't like a lot of the graphical changes and when it came down to it the actual guts of the OS pissed me off too. Word didn't travel so fast in those days compared to now, so news of XP's ridiculous problems was slow to spread. Microsoft was slow on responding to that and you're right, it was years of bad times for everyone. XP didn't break things though and the service packs just made things even better, so in the end the OS is remembered as "a good one." I personally disagree, I have a pretty good memory of the days before XP and I remember dealing with it's shit. ANYWAY, when Vista came out Microsoft hyped it to hell and back and they had felt the negative backlash of two major OS releases and it was generally recognized that "third time's the charm!" was their not-so-official slogan. Nope. Vista sucked balls, was a bloated piece of shit (not quite as bloated and broken as XP was on launch) and really I can safely compare Vista to ME because I remember both quite well. XP's massive major issues were at least hammered out early on and the bitching about bluescreens on IRC quickly died off. I consider ME, XP, (even though I did enjoy XP) and Vista a trilogy of shit that was cut down by Windows 7 coming along which was fucking amazing, it seemed as if Microsoft had learned their lesson. Except when Windows 8 came out, it proved that they were really out of touch with their users but you could actively see them figure shit out as they went along so I'm (cautiously) very optimistic about Windows 10 because of that.

Except Windows 8 was not even getting because it wasn't that much of an improvement, what it offered as far as performance was computer-specific and I saw no real improvement so I could not justify paying for it. (only reason why I'm upgrading now is it's free, I really don't give a shit about having the latest and greatest stuff) Plus the forced aesthetic style pissed me off on such a personal level that even if it was a massive improvement I would have stuck with Windows 7 until the end of time out of spite. That pure hatred was made worse when the fanboys were calling anyone who didn't want to upgrade retarded luddites who were acting like babies. Fuck that, it's our computers and if we don't like it we don't have to get it.

Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been, the difference is essentially Win95 to Win98, except Win95 didn't suck. You're right though, bad things can happen with any OS and Win7 has it's own problems, but I do love Win7 a lot and I can wrangle it when it gets unruly.

Man, using an old Windows 3.11 PC now is a strange experience, I sat there for hours trying to remember how to fire up Windows from DOS. Thankfully my old Packard-Bell is a patient girl, I even went through my collection of floppy disks to find all the cool as shit games I played as a kid.

I personally find just about every system I install 8.1 on ran much better than 7. I don't know why, but there was this overall hasitation in the entire UI that 8.1 didn't have. It makes 7 feel very clunky in comparison. And this is on systems with standard HDD's, not SSD's. Only reason I'm not running 8.1 on my P4 system is because Northwood doesn't have NX.
That's disregarding the nasty Windows Update memory leak in 7 that was the bane of my existence, which MS finally issued a hotfix in June.
looks pretty great tbh, much better looking than 7 or 8

how about lets not blame microsoft for not wanting the a massive portion of the internet to download windows 10 at the same time

Sorry, in paraphrasing LifeHacker I left out one vital thing: Put no key in.
I am guessing it acquires the key from Microsoft afterwards.
