Windows just needs to get better at scaling. 4K is a thing now and it's nearly unusable outside of browsers.
DPI SCALING DPI SCALING DPI SCALING DPI SCALING oh you guys care about the start menu
They've already confirmed that they're bringing back the start menu, how is that not listening?
If they do, good. The missing start menu and tablet-oriented interface was W8's biggest failing and the reason many of us told MS to fuck off with it. And if it's back properly I'd be interested in maybe upgrading to W9 when my W7 install stops working properly in a couple years. And if not I won't be surprised. I don't believe a word they say until it actually happens.
I would say Microsoft listens to their customer base quite well. It is a very large company, so it can be slow to implement certain things. Plus, the way Satya Nadella is planning Microsoft I think is very good. He is really refreshing Microsoft. I work at Microsoft and I am excited for the future. Also, I think people made to big a deal out of windows 8 start menu. I rather enjoy it. I can group up my programs that aren't important enough to be on the desktop or taskbar, yet still have quick access to. I basically think of it as fences but nicer, the thing I hate about how people are is that they get the mindset from what people tell them, and what they hear. So they are just "no, I don't want to try windows 8 because it sucks" yet they haven't really even given it a proper chance.
I don't really think Satya Nadella is behind this refresh (though he's probably part of it), it's probably more the fact that Steven Sinofsky got replaced. I don't think we've really seen much of Nadella so far, to be honest - he has yet to make his mark on Microsoft.
DPI SCALING DPI SCALING DPI SCALING DPI SCALING oh you guys care about the start menu
well you do know the start menu being full screen an takin away muh multitasking for 0.8 seconds is a far more important issue than fucked up resolution scaling, right? right?
Windows just needs to get better at scaling. 4K is a thing now and it's nearly unusable outside of browsers.
How Windows handles DPI scaling is fine (Although the percentage scale factor makes no sense), it's mostly apps not taking advantage of it that's the problem. Biggest issue is that devs can't easily test at large scales, otherwise the issues would get sorted out quicker (Like the uxtheme library not taking the DPI into account when drawing stuff like menu arrows or buttons) Edit: Also, GDI. Apps really need to be using Direct2D/DirectWrite or WPF at this point.
hopefully this iteration can be not shit with high resolution monitors
nope that will never happen ms supported high dpi for a long time but developers didn't give a single flying fuck and there is nothing microsoft can do about it
i hope windows 9 is the worst yet just so people shut the fuck up about the windows cycle
nope that will never happen ms supported high dpi for a long time but developers didn't give a single flying fuck and there is nothing microsoft can do about it
HDPI screens are (slowly) getting more common now, though, developers might make the move (start using the API that was introduced in... Vista?).

Totally unguaranteed non-fact? What are you basing this on :/ I for one really like the start screen and am actively annoyed when I have to used W7 at work. With luck they'll be an option to use either.
i hope windows 9 is the worst yet just so people shut the fuck up about the windows cycle
I love when people say shit about the cycle, they conveniently forget about a bunch of versions of windows.
The thing I love most about Win8 is the task manager.
What's this? Totally unguaranteed non-fact? What are you basing this on :/ I for one really like the start screen and am actively annoyed when I have to used W7 at work.
The thing I love most about Win8 is the task manager.
The Win 8 task manager is definitely a step in the right direction. It's miles beyond the Win 7 task manager. Personally, when I accidentally press the windows key in a game, I love that you can just hit escape and your back in. Win 8 doesn't tab you out like Win 7 does.
Hopefully with some updated icons.
And unified window UI for metro apps. It's a bit too clashing in my opinion. But I'll take what I can get none the less.
I kinda wish Microsoft would refine existing features instead of adding new ones. There are tons of little usability improvements to be made everywhere in the UI but the thing is, we've grown accustomed to those little annoyances, so it's difficult to even think of them.
I am looking forward for it.
DPI SCALING DPI SCALING DPI SCALING DPI SCALING oh you guys care about the start menu
Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display I hope Microsoft will have 2 Product lines. Windows Touch and Windows Desktop. Our family has a Surface Pro 3 which Windows 8.1 works great with. Removing said touch features would turn the Surface and other Windows tablet PCs into disasters.
Hope windows 9 will be free for windows 8.1 users. So if I buy a computer now I don't need to pay for Windows 9.
[t]http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/windows-9-start-menu-metro-desktop-apps.jpg[/t] This is what the new desktop will (most likely) look like.
They've actually announced since releasing that picture that it's getting a totally new look, thank christ. Apparently the unnecessarily thick borders around every window are going, for starters, and will probably just be drop shadows like OSX. My guess is they're also going to redo all the icons and stuff. Also, task bar icons will work like live tiles and show notifications on them.
I would like them to fuck off with that tile shit completely
You can remove it if you wish. Or just add shortcuts to folders, programs, links to sites, etc.
I do hope they will make it free for people with vista and later licenses as was the rumour a few weeks back.
I wouldn't get my hopes up, it was in Longhorn back in 2002 and then was taken out.
Yeah, I remember reading up on the Longhorn stuff for this. It's a shame, whilst it isn't a super-needed feature, it's quite a nice one to just have. Come on MS, don't tease me like this.
I wonder why Microsoft is already working on Windows 9 when Windows 8.1 was well recieved for the most part ? Isn't it a bit too soon ?
I wonder why Microsoft is already working on Windows 9 when Windows 8.1 was well recieved for the most part ? Isn't it a bit too soon ?
Windows 8 hit retail almost 2 years ago at this point. By the time Windows 9 is going to be released, its going to be close to 3, which will be about how old Windows 7 was when 8 came out. Not that it truly matters if its a free upgrade from 8.1 anyway. But the average lifespan for MS products is ~3 years before a new version comes out.
Wow another bandwagon thread full of retards.
