Today's smartphones are typically held together with proprietary screws and a lot of glue, and while there are obvious user-facing benefits to this manufacturing approach, it tends to make the gadgets harder to open, upgrade, and repair. That's not the case for the Fairphone 2, an Android phone built by a Dutch startup that makes repairability and serviceability one of its primary features. iFixit has torn down the phone using just human hands and a Phillips-head screwdriver, and has given the phone a rare 10 out of 10 on its repairability scale because of how easy it is for users to open and fix. The battery and the screen—two components that will most need to be replaced or repaired over the lifetime of the phone—pop out without any tools at all. Removing the modules for the camera, microphone, and headphone jack isn't much more difficult.
Yeah, but how good is the phone?
Yeah, but how good is the phone?
5-inch, Full HD LCD display, Gorilla® Glass 3 Android™ 5.1 (Lollipop) Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 801 platform, 2GB RAM 8 megapixel rear camera with OmniVision® image sensor 4G LTE/3G/2G Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth® 4.0 LE, GPS Dual SIM 32 GB internal storage Expandable storage via MicroSD slot 2420 mAh removable lithium-ion battery € 525 http://fairphone.com/costbreakdown/ it's selling point is that its easy to mess around with, doesnt screw anyone in any part of the production of the phone (workers paid well and all that) with and doesn't use conflict minerals
It's the first 10/10 for a phone, not altogether
If I was paying that much I'd want more than 2 GiB of RAM but good on them.
It seems like a pretty good phone. It's a shame it's that expensive. Edit. Woops, I meant I wish I had the money to buy one.
If I was paying that much I'd want more than 2 GiB of RAM but good on them.
Crappy battery too for 2015. Expect similar battery life to the Nexus 5.
This is one of the coolest concepts I have seen, definitely interested. I have been looking for technology that is produced without exploiting the poorer parts of the world.
Crappy battery too for 2015. Expect similar battery life to the Nexus 5.
Given its repair rating, they'll probably keep manufacturing the battery this thing takes well into the future. Guaranteeing that it'll be useful well into the future unlike other phones with non-removable and discontinued batteries.
Crappy battery too for 2015. Expect similar battery life to the Nexus 5.
I don't know why people think the N5 has shit battery life, mine lasts almost all day as long as I'm not literally using it nonstop
I don't know why people think the N5 has shit battery life, mine lasts almost all day as long as I'm not literally using it nonstop
The battery is good as long as the screen is off. When it's on the battery goes to shit.
8MP rear camera and 2GB of RAM? this shit will be obsolete so fast. phones are already coming out with 3GB + way better cameras (such as the LG G4) plus, at least the G4 is super fucking easy to repair, so I don't know exactly how much easier things could get. allowing the removal of the screen without a tool? gee, what a great innovation
This is how consumer electronics should be engineered. And absolutely not like Apple's "let's cram everything into tiny space with little to no air cooling" with intent to replace the whole unit for $$$ if something goes wrong

Holy shit I can't believe we have phones coming out with 3GB+ RAM, I still have an old desktop computer that only has 2GB, its so surreal
I remember seeing their stand at a design expo a few weeks ago, blew my mind how easy it was to disassemble

Pretty much every phone is designed to not be repairable by the customer. Apple is more intentionally releases phones with one big feature missing to get you to buy the new generation each year.
