Valve on how Team Fortress 2 inspired Greenlight: “We hardly make anything anymore”
I don't see how you can even compare this to kickstarter. Kickstarter is for people who need funding; Greenlight is for indie developers who want their game to be put on steam.
They're both projects that help people get started on their project. Kickstarter is developing money, Steam is publishing.
and that's also the reason tf2 is shit.
So basically it's just like Kickstarter but Facepunch likes it because it's made by Valve.
You obviously missed the massive jizz fest that was, the kickstarter for Wasteland 2.

Why is there always the one moron who comes into threads regarding Valve acting like he's the smartest man alive by pointing out that Facepunch likes Valve.
Yes. We get it. We like Valve. We're all a bunch of Valve fanboys and would suck Gabe's cock for words of pleasure that Episode 3 is in development. And we can't possibly find fault in anything Valve does because of this and blah blah blah.
Go away.

If anything Greenlight is the second step a developer would take. They'd go to Kickstarter to get their funding, make the game, then send it to Greenlight to be approved for sale on Steam. That's what I'd do anyway. The general community wants quality and is willing to pay for it, so if the game is worth a damn it won't take long for it to be approved. I would say Greenlight gives developers more reason to make the game the best they can at the least.
I foresee Greenlight doing great things for many Indies out there.
Still think it's a bad idea.
Imagine an indie company making the best game ever. But people down-vote it because "it has no ironsights" or something stupid like that. It's a very exploitable system and I think it's just another excuse for Valve to be lazy.
If they don't make anything, then what do their artists do all day?
Make concept art for games they're never going to publish, eh?

Obviously Greenlight won't be the only way to get on Steam.
A lot of you seem to think this is Valve getting the community to build their games for them.

People really aren't that stupid. LIMBO for example was a best seller on Xbox Live iirc, and it definitely has no ironsights.
Guys look at counter strike theres no iron sites in that game yet its still on steam valve has it figured out god...

Because it was on there before Greenlight? Duh.
Valve has engaged easy mode: Let the community make the content and decide the games.
That's what they've been doing since Counterstrike.
I honestly dont care if Valve dont model the weapons/hats. Hell sometimes the community hats are much cooler than the Valve hats.
Bethesda's been doing this for ages with leaving the community to do QA and bugfixing that doesn't involve core code :v:
