Valve may refuse to let Fnatic's Dota 2 team play at The International 2014 due to a player's mental

It's just safety concerns. Of anything it's cool that Valve actually takes mental problems like this seriously.

That's not the part people are mad about, read the thread.

The guy has vomited a lot in march/april due to his anxiety and his doctors told him that he should be relaxing through all of the summer.

Also guys, we are talking here about a 10 million prizepool, not some kind of broke up anxiety.
[editline]27th June 2014[/editline]
And each player from the winning team will get around 750k-1 million dollars alone (of course there are taxes too).
Regardless of if they've been talking with Valve directly, the last time a shitstorm happened that was thrown at them they didn't say a fucking word for at least a week. Not even a Twitter message. There was a complete communication cutoff about the issue. Here we have an even bigger issue involving one of their directly invited teams to the largest Dota 2 tournament of the year, with the largest prize pool ever to happen in eSports. If they don't give a serious, public answer to this within 48 hours, there is going to be chaos in the community and even the pro scene and I won't be surprised if it actually happens. I mean Valve have, like they've always had, communication problems with the public and now that this has gone public, it's not going to be good for Valve to sit on their hands like they do.
It's official. 48 hours at 1:25 AM CDT.

Good job reading the fucking article.
How many posts have we gotten like this already? Like, with people reading the title and not even two sentences into the article before posting.

ITS FUCKING SH, what did you expected from SH residents?
Do you people need to be spoonfed?
I'll break it up.
Era, a member of team Fnatic is unable to attend The International 4 due to health issues.
Team Fnatic warns Valve about that and asks to be able to play with a stand-in player (Excalibur).
Valve says Era HAS to play as a part of Fnatic roster or else they're not going to attend The International 4.
Team Evil Geniuses' Fear has health issues as well, and they are allowed to use a stand-in player (Mason) to attend The International 4.
People are pissed because it's unfair to team Fnatic.
Yeah that article title is pretty misleading.
From what I've picked up via comments around the web, the difference between the situations of Fnatic and EG is that EG told Valve way in advance. Fnatic knew that something was up with Era as early as January, but they ignored it for whatever reasons. The wake-up call incident described in the article was around the beginning of June. That's when EG had already officially replaced their injured player, who had already stopped playing some time ago. His public history with the injury started back in March or something. Fnatic has kept Valve up to date with Era's condition, but unlike EG they never made a hard decision and told Valve "yes, we're definitely changing our roster for TI" because Era's mental condition is much less clear-cut than Fear's physical one. Valve just reminded them they're still expecting them to attend as invited. Fnatic took a risk and waited things out, hoping Era would turn out to be fine for TI.
I can see both sides of the story. From Valve's perspective this is coming way too late and Fnatic/Era should have given the anxiety attacks the attention they needed way earlier. From Fnatic's perspective, it's shitty to force their player to choose between attending despite his condition and disqualifying his team mates from a $10 million tournament everyone's been preparing for for months.
I hope that in the future Valve will extend the player roster to 6-7 people in case an accident suddenly prevents the main team from playing. That would solve a lot of headaches for everyone.
That's not to say Fnatic is blameless. They took a gamble with an unpredictable mental condition, put their spot at TI on the line and hoped Era would feel better right around TI. The safe decision would have been a clear roster change in advance like EG did it, but as one of the most roster-stable teams in the scene they probably didn't want to leave a friend behind.
This is a lose-lose situation for everyone involved.
TL;DR: EG made hard decisions ahead of time, Fnatic gambled Era would be fine and couldn't make up their mind until recently, Valve has very inflexible roster rules.
P.S.
It should also be mentioned that Valve hasn't issued an official statement yet.
Maybe the guy should be on meds then. At least until he learns how to cope with the anxiety attacks without using the meds. If he's not on meds already he's dumb.
Those rating dumb. I've had the same type of anxiety attacks as him, have most of my life. So I know exactly what it's like. Went on meds for a number of years while I learned methods of coping with the anxiety attacks. Went off the meds and haven't had attacks since. So yes, I do know what I'm talking about.
Looks like some folks are ignorant towards people with severe anxiety issues.
Some people can't take medications due to: Allergic reaction, Interaction with other medical problems, Interaction with other medications, generic side effects, and a fuckload of other issues including the medication(s) simply not working. Learn that sometimes the world isn't about you and that other people may have more severe issues.

You're forgetting one vital thing, not everyone is able to cope as well as you are, even after learning methods, same goes for meds, not everyone will react the same as you did.

Well that blog post puts things in a new light.
Looks like there was some fighting within Fnatic about whether Era has become a team liability due to his inability to attend tourneys or bootcamps like in this case. The team didn't want to take the gamble, but after the medical staff agreed Era resisted and Valve backed him up by saying when they invite teams to TI4, they actually invite 5 specific people and only those people control whether they'll show up or not.
Then by the time Fnatic's manager contacted Valve that everyone agreed on replacing Era, the time for roster changes had already passed.
So I guess Fnatic could still attend if Era decides to trust his and his doctors' original decision.
Props to Valve for being so open within such a short time frame. Not sure if I understand or agree with their "we actually assert and invite individuals" policy, but they do seem to have the players' best interest at heart.

But Era said he feels like he could go, his doctors even said he was improving.
Fnatic could still attend with Era, or Era could voluntarily sit it out, which hasn't happened. He wants to play, Valve respects his decision.

Yeah, that's what I meant by trusting his and his doctors' "original decision", which was going to TI, and Valve backed him up after the doctors did as well. His team didn't seem to like the prospect of that gamble tho, probably because they didn't want to witness another nasty surprise.
I also wonder how things will turn out for Era after TI4. There's surely been some tension within his team and some doubt about what future events he'll be able to attend and whether it would be better to train the team to work with a more reliable player.
I mean, Era wrote about feeling like he'd been effectively fired. I can only imagine how shit he must have felt. The kinda nightmares that make people not mention their mental conditions in the first place.
Damn, the title is absolutely sensational. Valve is siding with Era (the medical ill player) as he has been approved to play and he is improving, but Fnatic doesn't think he's suitable to play and doesn't want to risk it. They took the risk of making a roster change at the very last minute and are suffering. They're making a medical decision with no background whereas Era's doctors, who are medical professionals, have determined he's suitable to play. The blame should all be pointed at Fnatic management, not Valve or Era.

I don't know about Dota, but the CSGO thread tends to follow large tourneys and post about it through them 'till it's over.
