It's the same information phone networks have. How do you expect T-Mobile DE to know that your mates phone is on. It's because they keep an active database of which IMEI / phones are online and active.
They need to know the information, otherwise how are they going to establish the peer to peer connection?

The FaceTime standard isn't open yet, you are correct, however it's known what standards FaceTime itself uses, which included encrypted video streams, such as SRTP, which itself is an open standard.

So basically don't hold the phone with your left hand. So if you are left handed and like to talk on the phone, don't get an iPhone because Apple doesn't support left handed people because you don't exist.

I have an iPhone 3G. It's a great device, 2 years old and everything. I am in the UK. Here, you can buy an iPhone direct from Apple unlocked, contract free. If you are on O2, your phone can be unlocked for free (on contract) or £15 (pay as you go). Any problems? If you hate AT&T, get a phone from here unlocked.

From what I've heard just about any case you stick the thing it will immediately nullify the problem. It keeps you from grounding the signal with your hand.

Yes, but thing how terrible video calling was. Nobody here used it. Now, I can video call a friend at a party over the iPhone using FaceTime and chat to all my dumb little buddies while I am disabled and shit in a bed while I post on Facebook how awesome I am from my iPad 3G.
