Why don't we just remove all the crosses from the graves in Normandy while we're at it. [editline]17th August 2012[/editline] I mean yeah they should be using something to symbolize respect for all religions but taking down a cross isn't the way to send that sort of message.
Quotes
Did you happen to miss the part where I said "anymore"? It doesn't matter who did what to it or what's on it, what matters is the fact that it was there and it's a part of the history of that spot, and no one should be able to take away the ability to put it up there from a private non-profit organization.
Why don't we just remove all the crosses from the graves in Normandy while we're at it.
the jewish american troops got the star of david instead [editline]17th August 2012[/editline] but no please tell me more about how everyone should be happy with a cross
Why don't we just remove all the crosses from the graves in Normandy while we're at it.
Why would they call for that? All the people buried under a cross in Normandy were Christians; Jews have Stars of David. I'm not sure what other religious beliefs are symbolized by.
Your statement is fluffy and heart warming but not really substantiative; should we have memorials for every individual religion? What about atheism, deism? How do we know the religious beliefs of everyone who died that day in the attacks?
You should have symbols put up by the families of the deceased that means something for them personally. It could be religious symbols, or for atheists it could just be something beautiful and meaningful to remember them by, that could for instance be an art sculpture or something like that, that can be placed near the memorial site as comfort and memory. Each individual gravestone remembers and atones to each individual life lost, by religion and message. The symbol that represents all is the memorial and the freedom towers. Both are secular, as far as I know.
So then we agree that a Christian cross doesn't accurately reflect the religious beliefs of every person who died?
I've never disagreed on that, so yeah. What I'm saying is, if it brings so many families comfort then don't tear it down.
Here's the "trimmed" and "polished" cross.
-snip: oh god im so dumb
Since atheism is believing there a god, why should there even be a symbol for it? Its not like you are following anything.
It was a rhetorical question illustrating the futility of having individual memorials for each and every philosophical belief.
It's funny cause most peole here read the title and nothing else. The atheist group wants all religions to be equally respected with some sort of universle mourning symbol. It is just a beam that was polished up, but someone had the word Jesus carved into it, and that doesn't necessarily represent all religion. They complain because the cross brings focus on a single group of people who died in 9/11. They don't want future generations to think it was some tragic only towards Christians.
But why don't they build a non-christian memorial instead of trying to remove the christian one?
They should keep the cross and put up other religious signs for the dead Muslims civilians and Jews, etc. While you at it you should remove this from a atheist military tombstone. A atheist is somebody who doesn't believe in anything. Many believe in evolution and science but not all of them do. As a Atheist I'm offended that they assume all atheists believe in evolution and all that Darwin super atom science shit. There shouldn't be a symbol for the atheists at all.
A atheist is somebody who doesn't believe in anything.
what?
For a reasonable appeal by the injured parties Not some intolerant assholes
If someone who actually had family who died there has a problem with it, then they have a case. As it stands, this is merely a publicity grab by a group of sick-minded individuals under the guise of 'public good' and 'fairness' It is really quite stupid and makes everybody but the people they are attacking look bad.
I'm ashamed to be a fellow atheist to the insensitive radicals that did this.
Holy shit I didn't even know they did that. I want a fucking atom on my gravestone that's badass as fuck.
Darwin super atom science shit.
Darwin super atom science shit? How does the Atheist symbol imply you believe in "Darwin super atom science shit"?
what?
Oops I meant doesn't believe in any religious beliefs. I don't know why I wrote that.
Darwin super atom science shit? How does the Atheist symbol imply you believe in "Darwin super atom science shit"?
It doesn't, he's talking out of his ass as I'm sure you know.
'All atheists believe in evolution' is a stereotype and profiling.

I rated agree because, unless it's a symbol specifically requested by the deceased, the atheist symbol on gravestones is pointless.
Darwin super atom science shit? How does the Atheist symbol imply you believe in "Darwin super atom science shit"?
The point is, a atom symbol clearly symbolizes science. What about those atheists that doesn't believe in darwin super atom science shit? They should just have it blank.
I rated agree because, unless it's a symbol specifically requested by the deceased, the atheist symbol on gravestones is pointless.
This.
The point is, a atom symbol clearly symbolizes science. What about those atheists that doesn't believe in darwin super atom science shit? They should just have it blank.
how are you stupid enough to assume that every atheist there is represented with the same symbol? obviously if you were an atheist and you didn't want that symbol then you could get a different one.
But why don't they build a non-christian memorial instead of trying to remove the christian one?
How about we don't make a religious memorial at all
regardless, I don't see how that symbol even remotely replies a belief in evolution p.s. you are an idiot if you don't
The point is, a atom symbol clearly symbolizes science. What about those atheists that doesn't believe in darwin super atom science shit? They should just have it blank. This.
Not all science is Darwin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Veterans_Affairs_emblems_for_headstones_and_markers Look at this, seriously. And if you have a problem with it you can ask ahead of time for a different gravestone if you get killed, otherwise they put it up AS A MEMORIAL.
The point is, a atom symbol clearly symbolizes science. What about those atheists that doesn't believe in darwin super atom science shit? They should just have it blank.
What the fuck are you talking about. How about you use actual terms and shit.
