Respect, or in this case the lack of respect, is not just a minor issue. It's a serious concern when certain elements of a multi-cultural society have something like this memorial overshadowed by the religious symbol of a more dominant element. It harbors contention between people.
Agreeable.
because it's on public land, and being paid for with public money.
Nobody gave a fuck when this same scrap heap was in a privately owned church.
Do you honestly think the same christians defending this would be so tolerant of a muslim symbol at the museum while there was no christian symbol? Not fucking likely. (See the mosque/recreation center controversy a few blocks from ground zero)
Thank you for explaining it without being an asshole, unlike some other people in this thread.
this whole thread is literally people just shitting on a minority group but because it's 'smug atheist assholes' that's somehow ok
Which seems to be the typical response to atheists doing anything that comes up in Sensationalist Headlines.
A few days ago I remarked that atheism gets more criticism than religion on these boards and this this is a pretty good indicator of it.
I find it strange how many atheists criticize everything that atheists do.
What's funny is that this cross has been there since 9/11 and nobody made a fuss about it.
only problem I have is if it was done as a official government program or it was private, if the land is private I have no problem what they put on their but if it was government owned then I don't believe a cross should of been placed. A multiple of religious icons or maybe just a normal memorial statue would of been better? Why does it have to be a cross?
You can't put an Islamic symbol there, as terrible as that seems you have to remember that this was considered to be a religious attack by the perpetrators, so putting that symbol on the site would be more offensive then excluding it.

If putting a star and crescent on the memorial is offensive for this reason then a cross should be considered offensive since by this logic a cross would imply that it was an attack solely against Christians.
What the?
Atheist are starting to sound more and more like christians.
What the?

Right because we're all doing this. The fact that they're adding a christian monument is stupid, but you know what's even less intelligent? Pretending a single group represents all of atheism.

Thanks for reading the thread. You are a good poster.

Try reading the thread. Your complaint, or at least what seems to be a complaint, has already been addressed multiple times.
Can a mod seriously edit this title? It makes it seem like the motivation for removal of the cross is so Atheists can look like dicks to everyone else.
It's so misleading with the lack of information. That it causes Facepunch to become stupid and argue things because half the people posting fail to read anything but the title and the last part of the OP.
Misleading titles should be a bannable offense just like it is for not reading the full report and posting anyways.

Fine, what do you want it to be?
Fine, what do you want it to be?
Atheists try to bring equality to 9/11 memorial.
those darn atheists
[editline]18th August 2012[/editline]
in all seriousness all religions should be shown
What's funny is that this cross has been there since 9/11 and nobody made a fuss about it.
plenty of fuss was made about it

I guess we can't have crosses in america because the native american genocide was perpetrated by christians.
i changed the title and it changed back
what is this
-snip too early to read properly, sorry-
(Still needs to be more distinction these people arnt helping the image of an average normal atheist)
I think there needs to be a clearer distinction between 'atheists' and 'antitheists' thats what these people are.
I think you need to not just read the title.
i changed the title and it changed back

illuminati, billderberg group, lizardmen etc

And having a single Christian symbol and nothing else blanketing over the memorial of around 3000 victims of different faiths isn't helping the image of America being a stereo-typically Christian nation.
Well, they have a point - there should't only be Christian cross, why not to present other religious symbols?
And why the hell should something represent atheism? What can they choose for it?
The US culture is mostly based on Catholicism, that's why.
[editline]woops[/editline]
Christianity, I meant Christianity. Sorry about mixing up.
Why don't we just remove all the crosses from the graves in Normandy while we're at it.
[editline]17th August 2012[/editline]
I mean yeah they should be using something to symbolize respect for all religions but taking down a cross isn't the way to send that sort of message.
That was the most retarded comparsion ever made.
THE CROSSES ON THE GRAVES IN NORMANDY REPRESENTED THE RELIGIONS OF THE SOLDIERS WHO DIED. You don't just see crosses you see stars of davids, cresents, etc.
The US culture is mostly based on Catholicism, that's why.
I would've thought Protestantism given there are more Protestants than Catholics in the US.
Anyway, typical case of "ANY RELIGIOUS ICON IS PREACHING REGARDLESS OF CONTEXT". Its a piece of historical significance, not a religious thing - I don't remember any images of Buddhist whatsits being erected.
The US culture is mostly based on Catholicism
what!?!?
you couldn't be more wrong, in the 1960's JFK's Catholicism was one of the most controversial topics. the US culture is mostly based on the separatists who fled from the Church of England. the Founding Fathers were quite anti-clerical as well.
Just remove the cross then, if its that offensive
I hate atheists.
I describe myself as 'not associated with a recognised religion', just to distance myself from any ists or isms.
They're just as bad as religious fundamentalists, trying to impose a belief on someone.
