What crimes exactly were he committing? That's like arresting the founder of eBay for a user selling something illegal.
But then again, why am I even questioning the way things are run at this point? Arbitrary laws are enforced with inane amounts of effort.
Apparently drug trafficking, hacking, and money laundering. Says it right in the article, so.
Nope, now there will be more street violence because more people have to hit the streets.
I'm sure the FBI knows what they're doing bro

Not really.
The value of BTC has been slowly rising in the past couple of months (from around ~$100 to close to $135-140 now).
There is already a flash sell going on right now but I really doubt it'll hold. The price is already starting to recover as people buy into the cheaper prices, which usually doesn't happen in a big crash where everyone is trying to sell. I give it a day or two before it recovers to where it was before, if it doesn't shoot beyond where we were before thanks to momentum and frenzied buying caused by the news and people buying back in.
The fact of the matter is, most of the people using bitcoin today are investors, traders, and miners not drug users. Silk Road was nessicary to "legitimize" BTC from being worthless to having some value, but the market has grown to a point where its not needed anymore to keep the price afloat. None of the price increases or dips in the past year had anything to do Silk Road or the drug trade (including the bubble up to $233), it had everything to do with investors, market forces, trading, and new users coming into the market thanks to Cyprus and other such things.
If anything this is the turning point BTC needs to be considered more than just a drug currency by people at large. Especially since everyone thinks BTC is going to fail without its drug market... but what if it doesn't (it won't)? That builds confidence in it and in the long run could easily make the price go up or even cause the start of the next bubble.
Reading the BBC article the guy who ran it seems shady as fuck. I guess I'm glad he was caught but it sucks SR had to die as a result.
Wow it is now illegal to create websites where people can arrange deals and exchanges? Shouldn't the FBI be going after those that are selling illegal substances rather than the person who made that site?
Might as well start arresting hosts that are hosting kiddy porn for their clients without even knowing!!

This makes me laugh because it's completely asinine.
That weed needs to move through these types of channels that is. It's a goddamn plant.

The website was just the icing on the cake.

Shutting down the exchange will do more damage in a shorter time period than taking the time to track down every single dealer on the site in the long run. It's simple.

it tends to skew fairly liberal on a lot of issues. Maybe they're just more vocal.
GG FBI, you just killed the most responsible and safest way to obtain legitimate drugs uncut. Fucking idiots.
But think of the children!
You know guns are sold on there too right? Illegal guns? Yeah I don't think the fact that pure, safer drugs were being sold on there makes up for that.
Meanwhile in bitcoin land....
