The guy behind SR was dumb as shit, he used his personal email several places where it could be linked to SR, and some of his friends on google+ asked him publicly "Hows "The road" doing?"
The main difference being that eBay doesn't actively encourage and enable illegal activity, which is literally the only thing that Silk Road does.
There was plenty of legal stuff sold on Silk Road. It was just a tax-free, unregulated version of Ebay without the bidding system. You could buy used video games, shoes, computers, plants, online books, whatever the fuck vendors had around them that they wanted to sell for BTC. Did you miss all the categories below "Drugs" or something?
As far as I'm concerned as I'm probably late on this aswell: couldn't you order just about anything on the silk road?
Pretty much. People sold phones, scales, surveillance devices. I even saw people selling their own strains of cannabis in seed form (Legal to own in the UK). Wasn't just guns, but by far the biggest category was weed followed closely by mainstream psychedelics. Y'know, the most harmless to society of all the prohibited substances.
Does this mean bitcoins are going to become worthless now? I never cared for the silk road, but I have a lot of bitcoins that I use for other stuff.
Why are people against the FBI taking it down anyway? Just because you could buy weed without having to go outside doesn't mean it wasn't harmful in other ways.
Truly a criminal mastermind.
Don't forget that he advertised Silk Road on Bitcointalk.org (a Bitcoin talk forum). He then later posted an email address hosted by Gmail that was linked to his identity. That, and his friends were aware of his site and would occasionally mention it.
TOR just makes it difficult, expensive and lengthy. Just like bitcoins. They're not foolproof.
by now haven't we come to the conclusion that the NSA and FBI have already subverted TOR and its encryptions...
Why are people against the FBI taking it down anyway? Just because you could buy weed without having to go outside doesn't mean it wasn't harmful in other ways.
Because it's my body and I can do whatever I want with it.
Why are people against the FBI taking it down anyway? Just because you could buy weed without having to go outside doesn't mean it wasn't harmful in other ways.
Removing the supply doesn't remove the demand with it. Now these people will have to do shady street deals which are significantly more dangerous for everyone involved. And we're forgoing the fact that drugs should be legally regulated anyways.
Some info from a reddit guy on r/silkroad
Well, with that, he kind of had it coming. Doesn't necessarily mean it's good, but with using his real name and just overall being suspicious, he should have seen it from a mile away.
Because it's my body and I can do whatever I want with it.
That's a really irresponsible answer, but whatever.
The FBI has also seized approximately $3.6m (£2,2m) worth of bitcoins - a virtual currency
Given that they also shut down Silk Road I'm guessing that they actually seized [del]2 million[/del] [del]1 million[/del] [del]500 thousand[/del] [del]20 thousand[/del] 3 dollars worth of bitcoins
there should be other alternatives to Silk Road no? I mean, I find it hard to imagine that no one else is running competitor sites considering how big Silk Road was
Why are people against the FBI taking it down anyway? Just because you could buy weed without having to go outside doesn't mean it wasn't harmful in other ways.
It was a far less harmful and more reliable way for people to do what they were going to do anyway. Now people are just going to go back to the streets to get what they want. This site helped keep many drugs off the street, it provided a way for users to be guaranteed the purity of their product through product and vendor reviews, and most importantly, it kept users out of situations that would end in violence, as drug deals have been known to do. You can go "Oh no drugs :(" all day long but in the end it won't change the fact that the Silk Road was far safer and less harmful than the "traditional" international drug trade.
the charge that will most likely be the easiest to stick is the hit paying for a hit whether or not it's executed, if the purchaser believes it to happen then he bought a hit
there should be other alternatives to Silk Road no? I mean, I find it hard to imagine that no one else is running competitor sites considering how big Silk Road was
There are a few, but they're no where near as big as the silk road was. I wouldn't be surprised if more alternatives started to pop up soon too.
The guy behind SR was dumb as shit, he used his personal email several places where it could be linked to SR, and some of his friends on google+ asked him publicly "Hows "The road" doing?"
I'd expect better from a physics major.
Because it's my body and I can do whatever I want with it.
thats not really the issue with illegal drugs, its what you do with your body while you are unable to control yourself.

Hey that's my laptop!
thats not really the issue with illegal drugs, its what you do with your body while you are unable to control yourself.
If you can't control yourself on drugs, that's your own responsibility. That is a dumb argument since the same is applicable to alcohol.
Because it's my body and I can do whatever I want with it.
Should people be allowed to kill themselves? It's their body and they can do whatever they want with it.
Should people be allowed to kill themselves? It's their body and they can do whatever they want with it.
Sorry when did doing drugs become tantamount to suicide? [editline]2nd October 2013[/editline] The only reason to be against this site is that the owner hires killers with your money.
Should people be allowed to kill themselves? It's their body and they can do whatever they want with it.
Yes.
I knew i was right not to trust that place
The only reason to be against this site is that the owner hires killers with your money.
Allegedly.
Sorry when did doing drugs become tantamount to suicide?
When you proclaimed that people should be able do whatever they want with their body.
Should people be allowed to kill themselves? It's their body and they can do whatever they want with it.
Yes, absolutely, because by and large their reasons are very deep and troubling. Should absolutely try to get them help first, but if all else fails, its not right to force people to suffer. That said, if you want to argue against drug use, you're going about it the entirely wrong way.
I would agree that the government has a place regulating the safety of products being sold in its borders, it only makes sense that an institution designed to keep the country functioning properly would have an interest in ensuring the safety of its citizens. But they should be doing it with an evidence-based approach and prohibition has been shown to cause more harm than it solves. If you feel the government has the duty to protect its citizens, which I would agree with, then you can't possibly feel that prohibition is how the government should be tackling drugs.
All that's gonna happen is someone else is gonna take over. There's too much money in this business to ever stop it.
Should people be allowed to kill themselves? It's their body and they can do whatever they want with it.
Of course? It's their body, it's their life
