What about geeks? But they're not geek cultures? I know these aren't as important or rather have been around as long as women or African Americans or any of those cultures, but people do have them as is important
There is no specific term for people who listen to all kinds of music or someone who watches all kinds of movies, I don't see why video games need one. The term "gamer" just has a lot of nasty baggage.
Are you fucking kidding me? Some verbs have their corresponding nouns that end in ER. Dancer, bartender, murderer, biker, swimmer, hunter, runner, traveler, gamer, boxer. And some don't, movie enthusiast, model collector, soccer fan.
I don't see why you need to attach your crap logic only to gamer.
And you are dishonest. It doesn't matter what YOUR bullshit definition of gamer is. Everyone who's going to read your "gamers r dix" will think that you are talking about everyone who plays video games as a hobby. Because that's what the word actually fucking means.

Devil's advocate here, but I think Sigma is trying to get at the whole "boys only club" effect that's still surrounding computer games instead of the actual hobby itself.

But that doesn't mean anything. The point I'm trying to make is that there is no gaming monoculture anymore so anyone getting huffy and personally offended and indignant over the twitter insults lobbed in the direction of "gamers" are defending nothing. They're hitching their horses to a post which doesn't exist.

I am not being personally offended, I am saying you have to be an idiot to say that everyone who plays video games, and that's a lot of people, is this on that, based on some fucking tweets of up to 100 people.

People who casually play games are then equal to people whose lives are nothing bit games, and are intrinsic to the culture that surronds video games?

I never said all gamers everywhere were represented by those tweets. Just don't hold a grudge against anyone who looks at that vile bullshit and feels compelled to say "man fuck gamers." They earned that; that's not the time to suddenly become a pedant and force yourself into the conversation with "excuse me but not all gamers..." Stop making other people's harassment about you.
[editline]4th September 2014[/editline]
I mean someone got forced out of their home by death threats? Well we gamers better make sure nobody says anything mean or discriminatory against gamers in the wake of that. We're going to make this all about us and our feelings. Please don't disrespect me or my video games. Excuse me but saying "gamers are mean" is stereotypical and insensitive. Please be more careful and conscientious with your words.
They're so easy to completely miss though that I don't see how it's really an issue, or how it could possibly mean the game is "Nothing but memes"
not that you're complaining, or laughing at them
My overall opinion in this though. Memes put me off in video games. I understand the whole 4th wall thing about borderlands, but I would rather see actual funny stuff in the writing than them holding up a sign saying "You should laugh now".
Most people who are really into memes would give them just a "sensible chuckle" anyways.
Example of good writing(and voice acting) that made me laugh

I sympathize with Anita and Zoe, but when did extremist represent the whole?

You said gamers. You didn't say "those who are sending the tweets".

Sure so if I look at ferguson and those who looted the stores there and go "yeah blacks behave like animals" you would be totally fine with that statement because they have earned that?
And when pressed I would make up some bullshit that by blacks I meant only those who are looting the stores not all black people.
Stop making other people's harassment about you.
You will have to explain what the fuck are you trying to do here.

Who honestly cares about "discrimination against gamers?" It's a fabricated identity. It's a google ad services tag. All I do is play video games all day and I still have better things to identify as than a "gamer" because "gamer" means nothing.

Oh my god you are such a tool. So in your head, if a black person would commit a crime, and you would go "all blacks are criminals" to which I replied "stop generalizing a large group of people based on actions of 1 man", that would mean I'm trying to make this all about my feelings? What?

Congratulations, YOU'RE A GAMER! Whether you want to be or not.

But "gamer" isn't a minority. It's not an ethnic group, it's not a sexual orientation, it's not a religion or a political affiliation or a career or even a talent. It's nothing, it's an adjective to describe consumer habits. You might as well go around identifying as a taco bell fan and getting really upset whenever anyone on twitter complains about how terrible taco bell is. The reason it's wrong to stereotype races of people is because that actually means something and affects people's lives and has larger social implications.
The fact that you think "gamer" and "black person" are analogous in any way whatsoever is completely, utterly batshit crazy.
Who honestly cares about "discrimination against gamers?" It's a fabricated identity. It's a google ad services tag. All I do is play video games all day and I still have better things to identify as than a "gamer" because "gamer" means nothing.
It's not discrimination against gamers. It's being a fucking tool and generalizing millions of people based on actions of a hundred.
And it doesn't matter if you identify yourself as a gamer or not. You play video games, you are a gamer. That's what the word means. And the word is there because gamers were more homogeneous back then. Now they aren't but the word is still in use and it means "someone who plays video games".

Isn't that really bigoted to say about people? Some people really have emotional attachments to games in the same way people have connections to their their other creeds. Why does it matter?
[editline]4th September 2014[/editline]
I'll say it's very ironic that someone who defends people's rights so vigorously and wholely would denounce and bash another's persons idea of attachment and self-expression.
Isn't that really bigoted to say about people? Some people really have emotional attachments to games in the same way people have connections to their their other creeds. Why does it matter?
No, people have attachments to specific games. People have attachments to CRPGs, or to their favorite Final Fantasy Game, or to the general theme of using games for fantasy realization. Nobody on this planet is attached to the quintessential platonic ideal of "video game," that's nonsense.

Playing DOTA 2 isn't self expression, it's an affliction.

It doesn't fucking matter if it's "people who watch movies" or "people who have long hair", or "people who eat pizza". You are still judging millions of people based on actions of few.
The reason it's wrong to stereotype races of people is because that actually means something and affects people's lives and has larger social implications.
It's wrong because you have to be a retard to think that actions of 100 people represent what the other few million is like.
The fact that you think "gamer" and "black person" are analogous in any way whatsoever is completely, utterly batshit crazy.
And here's the strawman I was anticipating. Came later than I thought but still.
( I can already see the strawman about comparing coming, this is not a comparison of the two but a comparison of generalizing)
Gamer and Black person is not analogous at all. Generalizing all gamers based on actions of few and generalizing all black people actions of few is.

Arent video games art?

When "gamers" start being discriminated against in employment then you can get on your high-horse about anti-gamer prejudice. As it stands you're standing up for a hobby that literally everyone has in 2014.

"what are analogies?" -SigmaLambda 2014
Arent video games art?
Video games are art. However, somebody's attachment to a specific medium of art is not a real axis of social enfranchisement or disenfranchisement. That's why the comparisons of "gamers" to "black people" in analogies that some people are using are clueless.
actually film buff would be a term for films
and yet you wouldn't call yourself a film buff unless you watch a LOT of films and people are trying to make "gamer" an all-inclusive term for anyone who played games ever
also no one would ever try to rally film buffs together and make it into a pseudo-community they might just, you know, get together and watch and discuss movies and not worry about what they call themselves.
"what are analogies?" -SigmaLambda 2014
"The analogy he's using is bad."

I told you, either stop taking your medicine or double the dosage. You are making no sense. I am not saying you are oppressing gamers and defending them or whatever.
I am saying you are a tool for judging millions of people based on actions of few. And it doesn't matter who these people are. It says so right in the fucking post you just fucking quoted.
[editline]5th September 2014[/editline]
"The analogy he's using is bad."
It's only bad if you are making a strawman that I am comparing situation of a black person to situation of a gamer. I did not.
Arent video games art?
lol playing games isn't
taking in art isn't itself art unless you're doing it in some performance capacity
Video games are art. However, somebody's attachment to a specific medium of art is not a real axis of social enfranchisement or disenfranchisement. That's why the comparisons of "gamers" to "black people" in analogies that some people are using are clueless.
Yeah, its ridiculous, but people still will fit in a subset of a culture. I'd also argue someone's expression through a medium becomes representative of the culture. Artists of any medium fall in that subset of the culture.

Yeah, and I said:

It's not wrong to make jokes at the expense of people who play video games because, and you can quote me on this: "lol who cares. It's just video games."
and yet you wouldn't call yourself a film buff unless you watch a LOT of films and people are trying to make "gamer" an all-inclusive term for anyone who played games ever

A gamer is just somebody who regularly plays videogames. Its as basic as that.
We don't have a term for people who watch movies because practically everybody watches movies.
But that doesn't mean anything. excuse me, but what the heck is a monoculture?
