These robots are pointless and stupid and any kind of competition they will stand in will be boring and embarrassing to both the parties involved as well as the observers.
at least it's something, do you think something big just pops out of nowhere first try? Things take time
Actually, yes. Because I can distinguish actual entertainment from a spergy nerd dream.
common dude, really? who died and made you the arbiter of "entertainment"? if someone finds something entertaining you cant just go "haha you only find that entertaining that because you're a STUPID NERD LOSER" without looking like a huge prick
Battlebots are dumb but lead to practical and functional designs that are fun to watch. Actual AI robot competitions are usually riddled with hilariously unreliable and dysfunctional designs, but it's fun to watch them for the fuckups as well as actual technological progress (see the The 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge).
I mean realistically, if this caught on the same level as battlebots, how would it be any different? Apart from the safety considerations inherent with piloted vehicles, the design innovations would probably be just as entertaining as the stuff battlebot builders come up with
Well I actually do have enough engineering background to tell you these things are a worthless pile of trash engineering wise, and you can ask anybody who ever had a hand in actual vehicular combat and they will tell you nothing like this is ever going to work. Mechs like this are the fedora of armoured warfare.
Okay ya' know what. I'm calling you out on this because I'm going to bet you're not even a fucking mechanical engineer. Not everything has to be done to 'advance society and science'. Plenty of works and creations are done because there is an interest.

This argument is beginning to sound as good as the 'Your Waifu is shit' argument. No one wins it because they all disagree on who's better. We get to see a GIANT ROBOT BATTLE FOR FUCKS SAKE
actually Im pretty sure he is an engineer, but that doesn't excuse the absolutely massive chip on his shoulder that it gives him Im an engineer too but that doesn't make me incapable of having fun
The issue is what kind of Engineering. I would never listen to a Civil/Structural engineer about something mechanical/aeronautical and viceversa.
It's called a "hobby." Have you ever had one? Some people are just lucky enough to be able to turn theirs into something bigger and more profitable.
Im also a huge armored warfare sperg, and he is probably just having the same violent (but in this case, misplaced) reaction that most armored warfare spergs have to people saying "mechs would probably be a viable military weapon" but nobody here is actually saying that, and just because giant fighting robots are stupid as hell from a practical engineering perspective, doesn't mean they aren't COOL AS ALMIGHTY FUCK from an entertainment perspective

People here make fun of for instnce NASCAR and people who watch it ll the time, and NASCAR is a billion dollar sport. These things will be at the very best very slow paced paintball where both robots trundle in position and unload whatever they have at each other with everyone being left with feeling of "okay, this was really pointless". And I am not saying robots can't be fun, I just cited multiple robotics competitions I find fun, it's just this particular thing is becoming popular before even actually existing just because people with nostalgia hardon for some old games fantasize about action these things won't ever be capable of.

Seriously, both forms are impractical as hell, let there be some fun and you can have your pointless fight and big bot lovers can have theirs.

Just this one in particular is a bad idea that won't work, that's all. And it's going to give public the wrong idea about what robots we can build are about and (not) good for.
I never said all entertainment or even all technology related entertainment is bad? Just this one in particular is a bad idea that won't work, that's all. The public has the wrong idea about so many things, why does robots matter at all. Anyone who's going to be getting the wrong idea is either an idiot or will have no involvement in the process of making robots anyways.

Totally doesn't sound like that's militarized at all. The public already connects AI with violence, our media is already saturated with it. You've missed that prevention bridge awhile ago. Also, this has nothing to do with the robots you're going into, these are human piloted. They're mechs. Also again, who cares? Let these guys build impractical but fun looking robots. Its a great way to test an engineer by making something that shouldn't be possible, possible and that includes clunky impractical human piloted mechs.

I'm excited because its happening, I don't care if its paintballs or something, the fact its happening is awesome to me.

I have nothing against the image of militarized robots, it's the image of trashcans with paintball guns attached which this is going to give off. Battlebots aren't really trying to sell themselves as anything genuinely robotic with the radio control crews being openly visible and everything. It's a show about DIY RC silliness. [editline]6th July 2015[/editline]
I bet it'll be no less pointless than a monster truck rally.
Monster trucks are awesome because they are vehicles capable of things practically no other vehicle could easily manage. These things have literally no point whatsoever. You could stack the weapons on a forklift and achieve exact same functionality.
I'm excited because its happening, I don't care if its paintballs or something, the fact its happening is awesome to me.
This. Nobody gave a shit about Will Ferrell's drumming versus Chad Smith. They were just excited that it happened. Jesus christ, quit being uptight fuckwads and have a little fun.
How the shit does this not scream incredibly silly?
There's ridiculous amount of people who think this has the potential to become the Next Big Thing.

You guys know the abandoned ghost cities in China? They should host the duel at one of those
Now I'm not siding with the other guy, but those dinky spinning blades will seriously fuck you up :v:
In Battlebots, even a wok can fuck you up.
There's ridiculous amount of people who think this has the potential to become the Next Big Thing.
That's because it has potential to be the next big thing after it gets attempted and possibly gets refined into an actual sport or something. You've been getting a large amount of dumb ratings because you give off this 'I know better than the rest of you' attitude. Yeah, you can be studying robotics but that really doesn't mean shit, and calling people spergy and trying to be edgy is going to do nothing but make you seem like some punk ass kid who likes starting shit. You'll never know how things will go until you actually try them out. Sitting back, judging every idea and throwing it away, you won't learn nearly as much as those who actually attempt to do something with it. You may be right in this instance, but we won't know until it happens, and at the very least, the people involved will learn from what happens and make their next attempt better. Not realizing this is being shortsighted at best.
We don't know what will happen in the future, for all we know mechs might become the king or not. But expecting an engineer, who hasn't even graduated yet, and bunch of armchair generals on the internet to know the future? That's like expecting /pol/ to be right about everything because they're sensible.
