It's history. I like hawaiis flag
It is a little hypocritical of me I'll admit, the way I rationalize it is that the reason we (and Hawaii by extension) have a different flag is because our independence didn't come about peacefully so I would think we would strive to be as different as the mother country (despite the current day Special Relationship which I enjoy), but for nations that got their independence peacefully I think it's actually really cool to have that icon of your founding nation in your flag.
Wouldn't say the current UK is any better when it comes to measurements, fucking stones lmao.
you lot arent even on the metric system, least they try
new zealand sucks
We also try not to be Prison State.
you may not be a prison state but you make a pretty good 7th state
We also try not to be Prison State.
Thought you were confused for a second. Had to hover over your flagdog icon to work out what the go was.
Basically that, a lot of places that the Empire has given back or forced to release have basically failed. South Africa, America, etc are the perfect examples.
Aaannd you took that seriously because?...
lord of the rings was filmed in new zealand, but it was based on australia

South Africa, America, etc are the perfect examples.
Since when is India a failure? The most surprising thing about India is that the fact it still exists 70 years on, using an administrative, political, and legal system heavily based off British colonial models in addition to education and the fact the entire Indian ruling class speaks English as their preferred first language. Canada is also doing pretty well last I heard.
"flag referendum"... seriously is that actually the only problem occurring in New Zealand. i may as well move there tbh.

Its just a huge distraction from the problems.
I'm still disappointed that NZ didn't choose to change their flag to this one:
Although I dont really have a say in the matter I wish it was changed, having 2 nearly identical flags is not only confusing but it causes NZ to retain its Australia Jr. status for many
I would have voted for the new flag but the one proposed looked like a rugby towel.
Feel the fern! Or not as they apparently voted for

Certainly it's the case now that it's in its death throes because of the massive industrial and social revolution that India is going through right now.
IMO a flag with a kiwi on it would have been really cool. It's already an international symbol of NZ and it's an animal that can be simplified for a flag extremely easily. Fern is a bit obnoxious to draw and I agree with the sentiment about avoiding a corporate logo on a flag
Disappointed it didn't win. I was also getting sick of hearing the same bullshit exuses for not voting or having the referendum in general. I voted for the new one. Pretty clear from the conversation here that most of the other New Zealanders here are John Key haters.
Did you vote or have a say in the first referendum or go online when they first came out?
That one shouldn't have even been included. Wasnt even part of the orginal line up and only made it in due to public outcry on social media.
While I would like to see New Zealand's flag changed, the flag they voted on was pretty shit. Red Peak or New South Cross would have looks far more country-like and thus better.

The story goes that flying the British flag was seen as a symbol of friendship with the British by the King of Hawaii.
sorry new zealand your flag sucks might as well just get annexed by australia
Shame, I even tried submitting my own but they wouldn't take it.
This was the best one, but unfortunately they ruled it out in the first 'wave' of selections. (quality is shit because that's literally the quality of the official concept)

A major part of flag design is how easy it can be re-created, and curves aren't easy.
The tiny stars and union jack on the current flag are harder to draw than a curve lol
Nah A series of straight lines are easier than a series of curved lines harder to fuck up
I want a new flag, but absolutely not the one they were proposing. looked like shit.
what was the NZ historical reason for having predominantly large amounts of black on most designs?
