Honestly, besides gaming, I don't see a reason to buy/build a PC anymore. Where I work I only see laptops. Mobile productivity is really important to most people now, a desktop PC doesn't let you have that.

Not to mention running a laptop uses so much less power.
If I found a $3000 Razor gift card on the street, I'd totally get myself one of these.
These are the kinds of people I am referring to, not those that actually have legitimate reasons for owning laptops.
Don't try to back pedal, you said
Why do people buy gaming laptops?
Not
Why do people that don't move around ever buy gaming laptops?
You also said
Who actually needs to go somewhere to play video games?
You explicitly stated that you didn't think anyone at all had a reason to buy a gaming laptop. So don't go "Oh you're just purposefully misinterpreting my argument!".
I, like others in this thread, have to move around twice a week and hauling around a tower, monitor, and all the cables and equipment necessary is down right impossible/ liable to break it. Considering it's specs and form factor, this isn't really a rip off. It's more of a "Do you really need something that powerful?".
Silly me I thought Bumbanut was Milkandcooki.
Just fucking buy one if you want to, who gives a shit what a shitlord on the Internet thinks about what you do with your money. There's legitimate reasons for buying a gaming laptop and desktop, neither is a one size fits all.
son come get dinner
NO SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET SAID THEY LIKE LAPTOPS
I have an APU based laptop from 2 years ago. It can run Tomb Raider (2013) on medium, and I bought it for around $800. The bad thing is that the screen has weird lines and it's too expensive to change it. but I wanna buy this baby, it's around the same price now.
Yeah I guess you're right.
I didn't realize there are so many people that actually need to move places and play games. All of the people I know that own gaming laptops only own them because they think they need them, when they actually don't.
A useless addition. Touch pads are terrible.
Name a laptop that doesn't have one
Name a laptop that doesn't have one
I had a black and white LCD Toshiba from like the early 90s that didn't have a touch pad, it had the little rubber(?) nub that you push on to move the cursor. I wish laptops still had those. And I miss that computer, one day it just didn't turn on and no amount of anything would get it to boot ever again.

There are some laptops that have both a touchpad and that rubber thing in the middle of the keyboard. I saw a toshiba one.
If I could add one feature to my Vaio it would be the little rubber thing in the middle of the keyboard, no lie
If I could add one feature to my Vaio it would be the little rubber thing in the middle of the keyboard, no lie
yeah, that thing is comfy as fuck. The only bad thing is that it takes time to get used to them if you never saw one.

You're saying that these people only use their laptops in their house?
Why do people buy gaming laptops? Who actually needs to go somewhere to play video games? For $2,500 I can purchase a desktop setup at least twice as powerful.
actually
for $1250 you can purchase a desktop that's twice as powerful, if not more
but just try and walk around with that thing and not look like an idiot
that being said people who buy gaming laptops to use as their desktop and never move it, even though they could easily have afforded a desktop, are delusional and stupid. A laptops great, but if it literally serves as a desktop, it's really missing the point.

I would love having a nice gaming laptop, also putting down 2500 on a PC for one place is silly as hell.
I sunk about 1800 into my current rig last year, and that's because I made it as bleeding edge as i could while still fitting it into a shoebox case so i can bring it around to places really easy.
It's still a huge pain in the ass to transport the monitor and all that shit, the laptop would be way more convenient
The way I see it, only Jawalt has an understandable reason for owning a gaming laptop.
Oh thank god, nevermind I don't need to argue anymore because my parents have been split up since my birth so I meet the criteria of someone who's allowed to have a nice laptop! Thanks Bumbanut!
A friend plays LoL while he is shitting in the toilet :v:

not necessarily, even. A laptop is way easier to manage cable wise and the one thing I hate more than anything is when i re-setup my room and have to move all my computer shit.

also this. If I gotta go to the bathroom and in the middle of a game, i aint gonna let my team down
[editline]22nd March 2014[/editline]
If I could get a laptop to match my PC as it is, I'd probably do it because my desk would have so much more room it'd be crazy. I could set up my PS3 and my WiiU at the same time because I wouldn't have my PC hooked up the the tv and it'd be great

I'd personally really rather have to deal with cords because of how much better for (stationary) usage it is
that being said, I really should vacuum under my computer some time :v:

The worst thing about laptops is that they are a pain in the ass to clean. I only did it one the last year, and with help from a friend who works cleaning laptops. My laptop likes to absorb dust.

Cleaning desktops is hella easy, especially when it has a filter, like mine

all that VS me taking a filter out and flicking it in the air or blowing it with an air compressor
also there are a ton of laptops you can't even open / have warranties.
I don't know where people get these ideas about shit overpriced gaming laptops - my laptop was a reasonable price, runs cool even when I'm playing AA games at maxed out settings, and the battery life is great for what it's running at. Only downside is it weighs a tonne but as a technician who has been moving around constantly I loathed having a desktop so much. Most of my friends have near the exact same laptop too, way easier to hang out and play games together wherever
thats actually not a bad price for what yer getting its still cheaper than a macbook pro
Not to mention it's actually not all that tough to replace laptop parts.
Sure it's harder than a desktop but if you know what you're doing it's pretty easy.
The big issue is finding the parts, cause obviously you're not fitting a full sized 7950 into a fucking thinkpad or something lol

The only thing I had to replace on my last laptop was a battery that went bad - it was like $40 and the first thing to go wrong in 5 years, by which point most people would have trashed it. My foster brother is using it now and although it's not too great it still works good for like garry's mod and such

Desktops are becoming smaller though with the popularity of ITX systems, considering they have the same amount of features that you'll find on a ATX.
Still not the portability of a laptop obviously, but a lot less cumbersome than what older desktops used to be.
The resolution seems a bit overkill to me (2560x1440 would have been very good already) but other than that this seems like a good laptop for the category.
By the way, to people who say "lol 12 minutes of battery life", laptop/mobile chips are constantly drawing less and less power with each new iteration (same thing with desktop computers). The latest generation of i5 processors have a max 20W power draw at max load IIRC, compared to 50W. Or something along those lines... the point is, perf/energy consumption ratio is always improving.
So if you wanted to be more reasonable you'd be more like "lol 60 minutes of battery life" (that's what any Windows laptop is gonna get with a big-ass 3D game running).

plug in keyboard+mouse and it's exactly the same
[editline]22nd March 2014[/editline]
my dream lan setup would be like, a highest-end retina MBP w/ a tenkeyless filco mechanical and a Zowie FK. ATX towers are hassle for setting up there and back at home when you get back

with an intel GPU, possibly. but with an 870m it's gonna tear through the battery in like, half an hour max

Except laptops have to reduce how powerful their parts are in order to gain the advantage of mobility
you can't always just swap parts out and just upgrade
your primary monitor is a small laptop screen assuming you don't use another
albeit yeah mobility is an advantage that literally leaves desktops in the dust a lot of the time
