Why do people buy gaming laptops? Who actually needs to go somewhere to play video games? For $2,500 I can purchase a desktop setup at least twice as powerful.
uni students who have nowhere to put a desktop?
This thing looks damn nice, and it's a pretty impressive feat to fit that much stuff into such a thin and light case. Reviews of previous models have said that battery life is a non-issue, and you're not really going to be sitting down to play games away from a power point. It's ridiculous to think you'd get decent battery life gaming just on the battery. That's not what it's for.
Price doesn't really matter. Sure it's expensive, but there's no way it could really be cheaper considering what you're getting in such a tiny case. And if you're dropping that much money on a laptop you either don't care about the money or you don't have enough to have both a gaming desktop and a decent laptop.
What's so wrong about gaming laptops? Some people can't afford/don't want to have two set ups, so it makes perfect sense to drop money on something that can do games and act as a regular working laptop.
seriously though hooking up a desktop at a lan party is like what, four cables? power, monitor, keyboard, mouse? maybe headset? what am i missing because unless you're a total shitheel and can't plug square peg into square hole, there's zero issue
and if you're worried about blackouts just use a UPS or don't all plug into outlets that use the same fuse
[editline]22nd March 2014[/editline]
having not enough space is still a totally legitimate use for this, but ease of LAN party use? total bullshit lmao
been to a lan party a few times, by far the worst part is me needing to spend 15 minutes disconnecting and removing my PC from my alcove and getting it to the car, making sure my monitor is secured so it won't get damaged, etc and then doing the same thing when I get back. Set up once I'm there is quicker but still annoying
Meanwhile a laptop you literally just bring it and you are done. Even a mini PC is annoying because you still have to bring your big monitor, periphrials, cables, etc. You wouldn't think it would take a lot of time but its longer than you think. Try timing how long it takes to totally take apart your PC setup, move everything to your car, then move everything to your living room, set up there, then move everything back to your car, then move everything back to its original spot in your room. Total time spent doing all that is a pretty decent chunk.
Just getting a powerful Windows 7 computer can solve all problems. Including gaming fuck-ups.
You don't necessarily need a 2000 dollar something laptop.
Send me any high era photos you might have saved that would be cool to look at? That would be awesome, I'm excited to hit google images right when the laptop gets here.
If you click on the link to my Flickr (near my username) should be some photos you can view in full res there, I can send you a few landscape wallpapers though if you are interested, just shoot me a PM

A tower doesn't solve the problem of mobility. And you don't necessarily need a powerful Windows 7 computer either.

I'm not aiming this comment at anyone specifically, but PC gaming elitism fascinates me. Elitism of anything is stupid, but when it comes to the elitist PC gamers it just goes to another level. Of course, an Xbox elitist won't like Playstations, and a Playstation elitist won't like Xboxs. But both usually don't really mind computer games.
And then you have the PC gamer elitist. The people who take that 'PC master race' thing seriously, even though the whole point of that comic strip or whatever it was, was to mock PC elitists. According to them, if you play games on a console then you're a pleb, and oh god you better not have a tablet 'because they only have flash games!!!'. But it gets to the next level when these people mock fellow PC gamers based on the games they play (apparently you're not a PC gamer if you play recent Call of Duty games on PC), and also mock those players that use even laptops 'durrr don't get a laptop you can get a rig that's twice as powerful for the same price durr'.
Was part of the reason why I gave up on PC gaming and settled down with this iPad and PS4.
Couldn't you just get one of those mini cases? I've seen people toss 680's into those and it handling it fine, guessing it handles newer ones fine too.

The thing is even if you have a mini case and get a small monitor and keyboard and mouse it's still WAY less portable than a laptop and you're losing out on advantages of a desktop. Laptops have their place and there's to buy or not buy one depending on your situation

You could just bring up the ITX case and some gamepads to a friend's house, then plug it in their TV. It actually makes a (more powerful) console for example.
Also, I believe laptops are becoming more and more obsolete with tablets like the Surface Pro. Sure, it lacks the graphic horsepower of gaming laptops but the screen was top-notch, to the point I didn't even need to turn on anti-alisaning in games (thanks to its pixel density). Not to mention playing some games through touch controls was also quite fun and intuitive imo.
Man that sure is a smooth and thin laptop.
I wouldn't mind having it. I have a powerful desktop tho, i hate bringing around when i go to LAN parties doe.
(thanks to its pixel density)
You do realize that laptops can have a high pixel density too you know? And as far as I'm aware the Surface Pro wasn't very popular...
in this thread a bunch of dudes anchored to their rooms by the only thing they've ever put a substantial amount of money in downplay the convenience of mobility in favor of putting more substantial amounts of money into staying in one place

i frequented lan parties in the days when crt monitors were the norm and flatscreens were an expensive luxury.. hauling a 21inch crt out of a car and up stairs and stuff made me develop an eternal appreciation for laptops

I feel like I'm one of those gifted people that own all three consoles (PS3, XBOX360 and Wii), PC and enjoy them for what games they provide. So I don't really understand when some PC pompous fan keeps beating on consoles. Which either shits me up the wall (in other words - get angry) or makes me confused.
It's all a matter of preference. I know one person that switched to PC and asked what's the point of owning a console.
And that person said "and don't say exclusives". I think some people don't understand, that gaming really began for consoles. I thought that PC came much later, not the other way around.
So of course I feel that some fans are a bit biased in some of the arguments they present and to be honest, it's kind of hilarious to witness these type of arguments. The fuck would they be arguing about anyway? "Which one of us is the bigger fanboy?" Oh please.
I got Y500, also a gaming laptop, and I don't regret it one bit (because it was cheap)
With proper padding, you could put it all in a back-pack.
Well you've made it clear you dont ride bikes often!

and everyone else calls it the nipple
I'd love to have one, but it's a teeny bit too expensive for me.

It's an ultrabook with an SSD, an i7, a really high resolution monitor and a high end GPU.
What did you expect?
I'd buy one if I had the cash to spare. I always bring my laptop with me when visiting friends. It could never replace my tower, but local multiplayer with friends is a wonderful thing even with Internet games and having a more powerful laptop would increase the range of games we could play together.

Y500 can also have dual GT 750ms, like mine, FYI. The 500/510p difference is the 510p has Haswell and the 500 has Ivy Bridge.
[editline]23rd March 2014[/editline]
And both are an insane value considering they are literally always on sale at the Lenovo website.

sli 750ms for ~$1000? fook year.
It needs Thunderbolt.

Surely a cyclist as experienced as yourself can manage a back-pack with a mini tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and cabling with the greatest of ease.
High resolution like that would suck. Running every new game on it would either be low settings at full res, or 1080p and higher or ultra. And aliasing is awful when you aren't at native res.

I have yet to find a backpack that can safely pad a 21.5 inch monitor, let alone that and a tower. If you can point me at a backpack that will fit a mini tower and 21.5 inch monitor as you say is possible, please show me.

You can run at 1600x900 and have exact pixel doubling, thus removing aliasing and giving you in effect bigger pixels (at the same density that 1600x900 would have on a 14 inch display).
You can do a similar thing on the rMBP and I can confirm myself that it looks decent.

Blammo!
Or if you can find them, military surplus packs. Worst-case, you put a basket on the back of your bike and the tower rides there (mini or micro obviously) and then ride with the monitor in the backpack.
Or you can get a cute little wagon to drag behind your bike and put all of it in there. Then you can add streamers, a little horn or bell, it'll be adorable. :3
I know those little trailers and they do not have any suspension and they will kill a computer if you bounce it along in there.
Or, instead of buying a lot of shit to carry around expensive equipment in an unsafe, awkward, and time consuming manner, I could just buy a laptop to compliment my desktop when I need to travel.
It's enough faff porting an entire rig around in a car.
