Microsoft reportedly installing Windows 10 without consent -- again

I have a surface pro that runs Windows 8, which I am very happy with. If they allowed me to disable automatic updates, I would get Windows 10. But the fact is Windows 10 is a different beast. It will slowly change over time as Microsoft sees fit. It's something that frightens me I'll admit. I don't know if just allowing a major corporation to change software on your PC is the right way forward, but if everyone else is doing it... should I just fall in line?
On the other hand, if I wanted a service, I would sell my PC and buy an Xbox. So Microsoft can go to hell.
Windows 10 likes to randomly shut down my computer while I'm letting jobs process (video rendering, 3D prints, etc). Yes, I've set my updates to be scheduled and etc etc. Doesn't help unless I sit at my computer watching paint dry just in case an update pop-up decides it's time.
I'm likely going to downgrade purely on the basis that it has ruined work and wasted filament in the past, and it's likely to do it again in the future. No, it doesn't happen all the time or even commonly, but if I can't trust a tool to work properly, then I need a different tool. Windows 7 or 8 does what I want.
"No reason not to upgrade" my ass.
Or even reinstall XP. That one never had this update bullshit. Fuck, go back to 98SE! I bet you'd never have an issue with viruses.
Comparing someone who is using Windows 7/8.1 and doesn't want to install Windows 10 RIGHT THIS SECOND to someone who is still using XP--which unlike Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10--is no longer receiving security updates, is stupid.
I have W10 on my laptop and I have to use a windows live log in just to use the calculator.
I don't even bother with the other "apps".

That's odd. I use a local account and I can access the calculator just fine.
Spying; From what I understand, it's simple data collection unrelated to highly private things. Not stealing files, monitoring, etc. There are reasons to dislike it, but not enough to avoid the OS.
It's legit 90% application and OS telemetry so MS can find out how people are actually using the OS and what to focus on. And how things are crashing and how to fix them. Most people don't submit bug reports, basic telemetry isn't quite as good as a full dumped bug report, but it does help.
MS have taken telemetry for fucking ever, almost any professionally made application takes a lot of telemetry and a number of open source "Stallman approved" programs do the same thing. It's really nothing to worry about.
The other "spying" is going to be standard preference monitoring to try and optimise suggestions from Cortana or the store. MS aren't going to be collecting every single keypress or URL you visit because that's ridiculous. They are going to scan the contents of your drives for kiddie porn because that's ridiculous (and far too computationally demanding to go unnoticed). Huge-ish spikes in data usage are going to be down to the telemetry reporting back, no point sending it as it comes in, bulk sends are a bit easier to deal with as you can hide them away from heavier network usage normally.

Microsoft could at this point just lock the entire machine until the user upgrades, and I bet you'd still find people justifying the practice with this argument.

My Surface Pro 4 came with Windows 10 Professional and you can disable updates through group policy, did you get a Pro 3 or did you get a 4 that came with Windows 8 for whatever reason?

Have you considered that you have it set to sleep after inactivity? Because it sounds to me like you haven't researched the issue.
I haven't had any issues with Windows 10 and I'm glad I upgraded but I don't think it should be forced on people. If people want to stay on obsolete versions of your OS that means there is something about it keeping them there, or that your new OS doesn't stand on it's own as a viable option.

It's a surface pro 1, the first one (it's like 4 years old now). I don't think I'd be entitled to Professional edition if I upgraded to 10. EDIT: I just found out I can get windows 10 pro! That changes things!?
Before I upgraded my PC I upgraded it from 8.1 to 10. It's better than 8.1 but worse than 7 IMO
My two reasons are:
a. I like Windows 7 more. I'm not going to justify this position, because I don't need to. I really do like the UI more, although there are some things in Win 10 that I liked that aren't in Windows 7. I am in no way saying that 10 is bad.
b. I use software that is older and unsupported, thus does not and will never run on Windows 10 at all. I want to continue using these softwares so fuck off.
I think Microsoft basically forcing Windows 10 on everyone is utter shit, so the nagware updates were never installed on my new PC and never will. Also, Windows Update is not allowed to do a damn thing I do not tell it to.
Fuck you Microsoft I'm keeping Windows 7 on my PC and there is not a damn thing you can do about it.
I think the dedication for people NOT to move to Win10 is even funnier.
I only have one reason. Forced Auto-update restarts.
I only have one reason. Forced Auto-update restarts.
Can't say that's ever happened to me or anyone I've spoken to who uses it.
Windows 10 works out good times to offer to restart based on your computer usage, if you're using your computing so inconsistently that it can't find a reasonable time you can probably find time to shut it down fully before that pop-up even happens I'm sure. It only does this if you've had pending updates for a few days.
My only reasons are it broke my PC until I went back and from what I have used on my dad's PC, it's nice but it doesn't really seem worth going through a complete reinstall. Maybe I'll get another hard drive to boot from but I don't see myself upgrading until my next big PC upgrade.
Have you considered that you have it set to sleep after inactivity? Because it sounds to me like you haven't researched the issue.
My computer does not go to sleep unless I tell it to. The most I have set it to do automatically is turn the display off. If it was something as fucking stupid as letting my computer go to sleep, it'd be happening on every long job I do.
The issue is simple. Video rendering or 3D printing or whatever is happening on my computer. I am not sitting at my computer because I do not enjoy watching paint dry. An update pop-up comes up, assuming just because I'm not at my computer, nothing important is happening. I don't see the pop-up, the computer restarts, and whatever was going on is now ruined.
If you have any magical suggestions, I'm all ears. I don't have access to the group policy editor because I have the Home Edition. Otherwise I'll be on 8.1 before the end of the week.
I only have one reason. Forced Auto-update restarts.
Never had one.
I only have one reason. Forced Auto-update restarts.
This is complete bullshit. I've had Windows 10 since the day it came out and I've not ever been once forced to auto-update restart. Infact, I was months behind on updates that I only realized because I needed them to play Gears of War Ultimate Edition.
this is not relevant to windows 10. they've been doing this since the beginning, windows 10 is not the start of it
You're completely missing my point. His argument was stupid because it essentially boils down to nothing more than "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about". Plus I kinda pointed out it was irrelevant in the exact post you were replying to anyways.
jokes on you microsoft, my connection is only 2mbps: i will instantly realize when you try to download that update on me :v:

I have many, many dxr based programs that use far more than 3.2 gigs, so when 10 actually supports these programs you let me know, k?
A few weeks back I decided to check if Microsoft would give me Win10 for free. I downloaded the "compatibility tool" or whatever they call it, and was rejected since I'm running a cracked windows 7. A couple of weeks later windows suddenly showed up as invalid, which didn't surprise me all that much since I'd run the win10 tool earlier.
What did surprise me, was that the same tool suddenly proclaimed that I could upgrade to win10 for free.
It all seems a bit fishy and weird to me to have a company be so damn pushy with their "FREE*****" software. It kinda comes through as annoying adware or spam to me, which is a weird way to feel about an operating system.

Where are you even getting this from? Windows 10, much like every version of Windows since XP that has had a actually functional x64 version supports a shitload of RAM per-application. I literally cannot find anything about Windows 10 x64 having hilariously low RAM limit or limiting the RAM usage of any applications.

The OS itself doesn't really do anything weird like this. MS are just running a super aggressive ad campaign because holdouts are the fucking worst for consumer maintenance. Having everyone on the same version of your OS is much nicer. Apple just about manage it with OS X (hope you all enjoyed the Yosemite advert taking up 80% of the app store!), Windows has never quite had that much success.

I have 16gb of ram.
How do you figure that my OS only uses 3.2 of them
Well then, let's get it over with quickly. "You don't have any reason not to want it but if you really don't anyway you shouldn't be forced to and this is shoddy business practices." There.
there are several reasons not to want it, stop being so dismissive.
this just goes to show microsoft has stuck to their cutthroat roots all the way through it's lifetime.

Yea there is.. it sucks ass
Yea there is.. it sucks ass
raz r23 sat back. his work was done. Despite the fact his comment was entirely subjective, included no points of argument or attempt at persuasiveness whatsoever and was what could only amount to a statement, he probably still took solace in the fact that his opinion, however brief, was in the public sphere. It was surely influencing the minds of those sheeple he might know as prospective Windows 10 users, and only for the better. He took one last glance over this hastily typed comment. A skipped letter on the end of 'Yeah' to kick things off; artful, truly artful. This would accurately convey his disinterest in Windows 10. He had exercised a similar styling to the ellipsis separating the two clauses of his sentence, taking off one period mark and leaving only two. The effect was completed and arguably strengthened by his lack of a full stop to end the sentence - the punctuational cherry on top, if you will. Overall, the comment was snappy, succinct, but written with an air of disinterest and crudity.
Take heed, do not mistake my writing for an attack on our cherished subject's character, as I can assure you this text is purely in the name of analysis and bears no bias. Truly, what was raz r23 thinking when he took it upon himself to release this gem of insight upon the world at large? Dear reader, one can only speculate. Was raz r23 the supreme architect of his prose, engineering every word to achieve the maximum possible effect upon whoever laid eyes upon his work, or was he merely a dribbling simpleton, the sprinkling of synapses in his mind barely firing as the letters lurched themselves onto his screen? We can never really know for sure, but one thing holds true; the annoyance at this lack of comprehension can only be compared to the feeling one experiences when reading a trademark raz r23 comment.
You may not of agreed to it but we are going to install this malicious software on your computer and the best part is its legal now.
How can they enforce a contract if the person hasn't agreed to it for them to install this software?

"Legacy" runtime support is 3.2/6 per application, period. That's not a supposition, because I've used it. It is entirely an arbitrary limitation imposed by 10, and does not exist in 8 or 7, also period.
I've seen more people vehemently insist you have no reason not to update and you're a loser nerd if you don't than people not wanting to update.
