Microsoft reportedly installing Windows 10 without consent -- again
My computer does not go to sleep unless I tell it to. The most I have set it to do automatically is turn the display off. If it was something as fucking stupid as letting my computer go to sleep, it'd be happening on every long job I do.
The issue is simple. Video rendering or 3D printing or whatever is happening on my computer. I am not sitting at my computer because I do not enjoy watching paint dry. An update pop-up comes up, assuming just because I'm not at my computer, nothing important is happening. I don't see the pop-up, the computer restarts, and whatever was going on is now ruined.
If you have any magical suggestions, I'm all ears. I don't have access to the group policy editor because I have the Home Edition. Otherwise I'll be on 8.1 before the end of the week.
Reboot your PC once a week when you get the updates on Tuesday. :v: Patch Tuesday is not a secret.
I love Windows 10 having used it on my laptop many a time. But currently, the features it has over Windows 7 are not big enough to make me really want to bother upgrading on my desktop. Like many, I'm going to wait until I build a new computer further down the line.
Also, neat trick someone told me about if you suffer from inconvenient forced updates in Windows 10 for some reason and lose work because of it:
Set your connection as a metered connection. It doesn't slow anything down or limit your upload/download rate, it just cuts out some Windows 10 features to reduce on bandwidth usage which ALSO includes Windows updates. With the setting on they will not automatically download (meaning you'll get to do it when you want to, not when it wants to), which means they won't try to get you to install them either.
A couple of minor downsides though, but it's better than losing work because you weren't paying attention and Windows decided to reset your scheduled update periods.

Realistically, the best way to install Windows 10 is from a fresh install. Upgrades (like they have always been historically) usually introduce a lot of weird issues. Especially if your old install has something wrong with it, that you may or may not be aware of (which as I've learned, Windows tends to break stupid specific stuff all the time). I've gotten REALLY lucky with two upgrades, but they still weren't flawless. I just happened to know enough that I could figure them out.
So yeah, if your waiting for an upgrade to reinstall Windows, that makes sense.
There is no reason to not move over to Windows 10.
Speak for yourself. I lost some of my favorite mod tools and programs when I moved from Vista to 8.1. I'm not about to move to 10 and spend another week or so trying to patch them all up and getting them to work properly.
Why are some people such babies about others not wanting to update? Stop doing Microsoft's PR dept.'s job for them.

The only "legacy" runtime support I've heard of is 16- and 32-bit, where yes, your memory is limited because that's how WOW (like every other compatibility layer in existence) handles 16/32-bit memory.
Where does it say anywhere that a 64-bit application is ever limited to 3.2GB?

You mean the limit for 32 bit applications that has been there since WOW64 was introduced? Yeah, that's not news.
Are you sure you were actually using a 64 bit application, because I run lots of shit that goes way past that supposed 3.2 GB barrier. Specifically, games. GTA V uses 5-6 GB on my machine.
Honestly them pushing win10 so hard to the point of installing it outwith consent multiple times makes me really not want it
Apparently its not good enough to stand up on its own so they have to forcefully install it, I don't want it then

Yes, I'm sure. It's a DX issue, and if you're running it under dx11, there's your answer.

I'm not even remotely talking about how WOW operates, and this is an arbitrary issue with 10, no other OS.

No I don't understand what you mean. I mean, yes, obviously I'm running GTA V on DX11. What games are you talking about in particular that have that issue? I can't think of many 64 bit games that weren't DX 11 and ever came close to that much RAM. You have to give examples.
Apparently its not that common of an issue if many people are having a problem understanding what you mean. I'm also not finding anything about it on Google when I search "windows 10 3.2 gb".
I can't help but feel that there's more to these cases of damaged hardware than a simple Operating System upgrade.
windows 10 ran over my dog
This is complete bullshit. I've had Windows 10 since the day it came out and I've not ever been once forced to auto-update restart. Infact, I was months behind on updates that I only realized because I needed them to play Gears of War Ultimate Edition.
There's a lot of misconception, but it does happen. Windows 10 will try to automatically do updates when it thinks you're not using your computer. The issue comes from the fact that it judges this based purely on if the user has used the mouse and keyboard in a while, and doesn't take into account any of the processes running on the computer.
So, in my case, I'll sometimes find Windows decided "in the middle of a 10 hour print" was a good time to restart.
I've also heard that it'll even wake up from sleep mode to do updates, but I don't personally use sleep mode, so I can't confirm that.
[editline].[/editline]
I should mention that otherwise I really like Windows 10 and have helped several others do the upgrade, but this whole automatic restart nonsense is unforgivable. If I can't trust Windows 10 not to ruin my work, then I need something other than Windows 10. Plain and simple.
And yeah there's the privacy issue, but I really wouldn't trust Windows 7 or 8 any more than I would 10.
there's hardly any incompatibilities with windows 10, if it runs on 7 or 8, it 90% should run on 10
the NSA will not be interested in your hentai collection, you can sleep at ease knowing an agent isn't interested in you
there's hardly any "ad-ware", you can turn off suggested apps and you can turn off windows spotlight, anything that you see you don't like can be turned off
if you, after all this shit still find 10 intolerable, you can rollback at anytime
the only reason really why you shouldn't upgrade is if your computer's hardware is as old as a piece of shit or your on a connection that has a quota less than 10-20gb
There's actually a pretty legitimate reason for gamers to not want to upgrade, after 7 Windows no longer has an option in the UI to disable desktop composition. It can still be disabled with hacky methods, but it's pretty buggy. Desktop composition basically vsyncs your desktop to stop applications from visibly drawing out of sync with each other and causing things like trailing when windows are dragged. The problem is that, just like vsync, this introduces input lag. I play SF 3rd Strike online with Fightcade in windowed mode because alt tabbing causes desyncs, so I don't want to upgrade to Win10.
Personally, I don't mind how windows 10 looks, though the fact that they're actively pushing it this much as well as the hardware compatibility issues I've heard are really causing me not to want to update. If MS used a less intrusive upgrade system then I may be alright with it.
That along with the whole "You need this or else new hardware won't work" just seems wrong for something which should be optional.
If they did the same thing they did when windows 7 came out (Just let the OS sell itself) then we wouldn't have all of this imo
I upgraded over my 7 last year and so far it's been completely solid, all my games and programs work the same. So, I can't say I regret it yet.
I kinda want to upgrade but I have my programs installed on a separate drive to windows which is on my SSD. Is it gonna retain the "knowledge" in the registry those programs are there and installed or will it be one big clusterfuck?
life for me was much easier before I moved to windows 10

It will be one huge clusterfuck

Windows 7 works fine for me, that's really only why I stay on it. I don't need Windows 10.

The new hardware thing was going to happen regardless. 7 is out of mainstream support so it is no longer being updated beyond security and critical stability. It is no longer being optimized for newer processors and such.
Photo Viewer doesn't work for me. I was expecting a bunch of my modeling programs to break, not an entire core functionality :v:
Windows 7 works fine for me, that's really only why I stay on it. I don't need Windows 10.
This has been my reason for sticking with Win7 for a while. Installing Win10 would necessitate screwing with all my current installed files/programs and mods etc that I've been comfortable with for the past couple of years since I'd have to buy a new key (for reasons that I should not need to explain). Plus it might break the drivers/other bits of software that I use daily and doubly so for my laptop; last time I had a new installation (it came blank) I had to deal with the intense headache of finding the drivers for my laptop's wifi card since the drivers packaged with it were for Win8, not Win7.
Here's a good thing to think about after August I believe Windows 10 stops being free. After August I'll assume none of you hipsters will need to worry about Windows 10. Unless m$ goes all Oprah on our asses and keeps it free.
How so?
No, it's not. Not at all.
The start menu has been replaced, the file explorer has been replaced, etc. The design language employed in Metro is vastly different than Aero.
There's a difference between the NSA collecting your Google history and the NSA knowing everything you do at the OS level.
I'm a member of a vast minority then, because I've encountered both.
Lmao this is a stupid reason, start menu can be changed so it's like before. If you're seriously complaining about the file explorer you need to get your shit in check, Metro is whatever I barely notice it. You saw a few videos and articles now you think the entire OS is taking your info. You can turn it all off, they are features the keylogging that everyone says is there is the system wide auto correct. Location services are for that Wifi Sync bullshit. You can turn off everything. You can also delete any app on your PC and I mean every and any even the Windows Store, Cortana whatever. Not sure what'll happen but I know deleting the store won't effect anything.

Yup same here I hibernate my PC consistently and I only noticed that I needed them because I couldn't download some store apps, I think I've been asked to restart once? and it wasn't even a force restart it asked me if I wanted to install an update and I said no. I didn't see it for another 2 months.
Honestly windows 10 is fine, and I've never had any problems with it, and I can't see why anyone has a problem with it.
If you want to uninstall system metro apps
Powershell then use the
Get-Appxpackage -AllUsers
That'll get all of the apps on your system.
Now just do either one of these commands replacing the package name I've given with the app you want to delete.
Remove-AppxPackage -package "package1_1.0.0.0_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe"
I hope game devs will all hop on the linux train soon :(

As much as everyone would love that, if Valve fails at making Linux a Gaming OS then there's no hope.
Thanks Bill. I made sure to cancel the automatic windows 10 update that it kept popping up with only to wake up to windows 10 anyway. Now I get random moments where my computer chugs for like a nanosecond but it's enough to notice. 8 gigs of ram and i5 is not enough for windows 10 apparently or could it be that it's a piece of shit OS that's not compatible with most of common hardware that's not a tablet or a laptop.
Lost a bunch of really useful bookmarks that I had no backed up because I did not expect Windows 10 to be shoved down my throat.

Or it won't and it will pass all the registry stuff just fine, who knows.

I upgraded two computers with programs in another partition; I just had to make sure the letters matched (so S: keeps being S:, B: keeps being B:, etc).
Is there a way to counter Win 10 from auto-installing?
I heard you could edit the Windows Update settings on your PC to prevent it but I want it confirmed if it's indeed true.

(Top option says "Search for updates but let me choose wether to download and install".)

That's what I'm doing, but it'll mark W10 for installation so you have to uncheck it when you update.

I've had updates queued for the past 2 weeks. Have yet to see a forced reboot prompt. My computer stays in sleep mode when I'm not using it.

I'm not sure I would call it a privacy issue.
For example, this article looks in-depth on the packets sent to Microsoft in Windows 10.
His summary: "...In short, there wasn’t much network traffic to/from Microsoft, even with all privacy settings enabled. The traffic I could decipher was all for Cortana and the Edge browser." Cortana collects data that ultimately improves your experience with the service, and they're probably trying to figure out how to improve Edge. Not great, but they aren't stealing your credit card info or SSN.
There's another similar article that breaks down why Microsoft is not mining your data, and the majority of what it does send is entirely anonymous and is data that helps them analyze usage.
The other big issue is Edge's InPrivate mode caching your history on the disk in plain sight, which is inexcusable. But there are many other problems with Edge that should suggest you use another browser anyway. And, if you are using a browser like Chrome, I can assure you that you are sending similar data to Google that Microsoft is collecting in Windows.
Really, it's been a few months since the release of Windows 10. A lot of the negativity around it has been resolved (read: a lot of it, not all of it), and the reliability and functionality of the OS has been improved immensely.
Sure, forcing the upgrade is scummy. But I implore you to take a second thought about holding on to Windows 7. You probably have valid reasons to stay, but there are less and less reasons to adamantly hold off from the upgrade.
