On the other hand, there is an attrition effect - less smart people tend to drop out of school, with this effect increasing the further up the education pole you get. For parental SES - a rich family environment will be very unlikely to have the kind of classic conditions which depress IQ scores - nutrient deficiencies, physical abuse, etc. On the other hand, it is well established that intelligence is heritable, and that it helps with moving up the social ladder. Therefore children of rich families tend to be [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_toward_the_mean]slightly[/url] smarter, all else held equal.
